The group ABB has won an order worth more than $ 40 million to provide power and propulsion systems for two new icebreakers commissioned by the Russian shipping company Sovcomflot (SCF) to Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, a joint venture recently formed by STX Finland and United Shipbuilding Corporation ( of 10 December 2010). The supply includes generating systems and power distribution, motors for thrusters and two 6.5-megawatt propulsion systems including drives and electric Azipod propulsion units.
Designed for extreme environmental conditions in the Arctic Sea, the ships can operate up to 1.7 m thick ice at temperatures below 35 degrees Celsius. Both vessels will be delivered in the spring of 2013.The Sovcomflot will use to transport materials from the platform to develop the Sakhalin-1 offshore field Arkutun-Dagi near Sakhalin island in the far east of Russia.
