Trade surplus shrinks 44% in first half
The nation's customs-cleared merchandise trade surplus shrank
44 percent from a year earlier to 3.19 trillion yen for the first
half of calendar 2001 as imports outgrew exports, the Finance
Ministry said Monday.
The figure represents the fifth straight fall on a half-year basis
and the sharpest in postwar history, the ministry said in a preliminary
report.
The trade surplus in June alone came to 761.7 billion yen,
