KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- EIGHT cadets at the United States Merchant
Marine Academy and their teacher peered from a ship's bridge into
the foggy night. Radar showed a vessel approaching, and the cadets'
ship swerved to starboard to avoid a crash. Out of the mist, a
ship's bow slid in front of them.
