Le groupe allemand Willi Betz a acheté un terrain à Eupen en Belgique, non loin de la frontière allemande. Il est en train dy construire une nouvelle plate-forme dont lactivité sera principalement axée sur les transports de et vers le Royaume-Uni et, dans une moindre mesure, de et vers la France. Ces installations seront opérationnelles vers le mois doctobre de cette année. Des activités commerciales nétant pas prévues pour linstant, linvestissement reste relativement modeste.
- Les pays émergents auront besoin du transport routier pour décoller économiquement
Louverture progressive des marchés va provoquer un essor des transports nationaux et internationaux dans les marchés émergents. Il sagit pour ces pays de concilier croissance et respect de lenvironnement, cest-à-dire de mettre en place des structures de développement du transport durable. La question qui se pose dès lors est de savoir si ces pays pourront réaliser leur croissance de la même manière que les économies occidentales, cest-à-dire via un boom du transport routier, ou sils devront tenir compte de lexpérience européenne et sauter cette étape afin de suivre la politique qui est désormais prônée en Europe. Des débats au Congrès mondial de lIRU à Bucarest, il est ressorti
que cette émergence économique ne pourra se faire sans miser dans une très large mesure sur le transport routier. Mais, étonnamment, ce nest pas des milieux de la route quémanait le discours le plus fort en ce sens, mais bien dun observateur neutre, la Banque Mondiale.
- DAF a redessiné son XF95
DAF Trucks commercialisera en octobre de cette année une nouvelle version de son poids lourd 95XF. Ce modèle populaire introduit en 1997 recevra un sérieux lifting et sera rebaptisé en XF95. DAF a revu le design et proposera un certain nombre de nouveautés techniques au niveau du châssis et du moteur.

Les mesures introduites par les autorités concernant le marché de lemploi, comme le crédit-temps ou la retraite anticipée ont dimportantes conséquences pour la disponibilité de la main-doeuvre. Elles placent les manutentionnaires anversois devant de graves problèmes. Ils doivent trouver suffisament de personnel qualifié pour répondre à la croissance de leurs activités. Suite à loffre très restreinte de main-doeuvre, ils ont cependant été confrontés à une croissance des coûts du personnel largement supérieure à la moyenne nationale (7,2% contre 4,8%).
