- Asean leaders urged to take joint action against piracy
WARNING of dire economic consequences for the entire Asean region should a pirate attack on a VLCC or chemical tanker end in catastrophe, the Federation of Asean Shipowners' Associations has appealed directly to the 10 Asean heads of state for action.
- Asian shipowners hit out at EU
ASIAN shipowners have slammed the European Union decision to push ahead with a ban on single-hull tankers, and backed an alternative submission by four countries, including Singapore, that proposes a more practical phase-out.
- EU asks Latvia to ban single-hull tanker
THE European Commission said it will ask Latvia to ban single-hull oil tankers from its ports, in response to news that such a vessel will load a cargo of heavy fuel oil there and sail around the EU coast.
- Precious Shipping's profit set to soar
PRECIOUS Shipping, the second-best performer on the Thai stock exchange this year, may report its highest quarterly profit since 1999 for the three months ending Dec 31, after freight rates surged to a record.
- Freighter spills oil in NY port
A freighter spilled some 228,000 litres of heavy fuel oil in New York Harbour on Tuesday and some oil had reached the beach off Coney Island, the US Coast Guard said.

STAR Cruises' US subsidiary Norwegian Cruise Line has advised the Republican political party against chartering its 2,240-passenger Norwegian Dawn liner as a floating hotel and entertainment centre for its upcoming national convention in New York.
