- Ransom paid, pirates free oil tanker captain, crew
THE Malaysian-flagged oil tanker MT Penrider's captain and two crew kidnapped last week by heavily armed pirates suspected of being Acehnese rebels, have been released after an estimated RM200,000 ransom was paid.
- P&O ports handle 26% more containers in 2nd qtr
PENINSULAR & Oriental Steam Navigation Co, the UK's largest shipping company, said its ports business handled 26 per cent more containers in the second quarter, while the number of cars and passengers on its ferries declined.
- Cause of collision
MARITIME authorities said the Polish crew of a Cypriot-registered ship was responsible for a collision in May that resulted in a Chinese freighter sinking.

Nigeria temporarily closed its borders with Benin last weekend in a bid to reduce the occurrence of oil smuggling and other cross-border crimes. Thieves are siphoning off an estimated 100,000 bpd of crude oil, a practice known as "bunkering".
