Ports jams could see car makers take to air
CONGESTION at SA ports and other factors affecting the reliability of goods movement in and out of the country have led to the automotive sector studying the merits of a scheduled emergency airlift into SA.
This would be aimed at replacing the ad-hoc emergency booking of air cargo space, which occurs now as each manufacturer struggles to keep the conveyor belts rolling.
"It's a fact of life that product is air-freighted because of inefficiencies in the supply chain, or stock being lost or damaged in a plant," said the logistics manager of the Automotive Industry Development Centre, Barlow Manilal
