China shipbuilding plan sets sail
China has vowed to become the world's leading shipbuilder.
Wei Jianguo, vice-minister of commerce, urged officials to take active and effective measures to support the development of China's shipbuilding industry, expand exports and thereby contribute to the continuous, steady and healthy development of the national economy.
China's ship exports increased by 180 per cent year-on- year to US$720 million in the first quarter of this year, customs statistics showed.
Shipping production has become a vital new growth area in the nation's export trade in machinery and electronic products.
China aims to export at least US$2 billion of ships and related products this year
