Govt to reduce shipping costs
KUCHING - Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr George Chan has assured that the government will look into reducing the high shipping costs faced by the industries.
He disclosed that the State Planning Unit (SPU) had commissioned a study last year to look into lowering the shipping costs.
"The study will be completed in a few months time," Dr Chan told journalists at the Briefing cum Brainstorming Session with Industrialists and Manufacturers at Sarawak Industrial Promotion and Exhibition Centre (SIPEC) here yesterday.
Noting that the high shipping costs might have an adverse effect on export-oriented activities, Dr Chan said the government would consider lowering the tax imposed on shipping from 25 percent to about 10 percent. He also urged the small-and medium industries (SMIs) to equip their workers with the latest technology to beef up production and improve labour efficiency
