Environmental group argues pilotage changes could lead to harbour accident

HALIFAX (CP) - Regulatory changes that remove the requirement for harbour pilots on smaller ships increase the risk of accidents in Halifax harbour, an Atlantic Canadian environmental group claimed Wednesday.

Currently all foreign vessels and Canadian vessels over 1,500 tonnes, such as some larger offshore supply vessels, require a pilot to be on board. Under new rules proposed by the Atlantic Pilotage Authority, a federal Crown corporation based in Halifax, the regulations would double the threshold for pilotage to 3,000 tonnes for Canadian vessels ......
