JAPANESE shipyards have announced their first capacity expansion in 30 years, pumping in US$409 billion to boost output by 10 per cent, as shipyards around the world struggle to keep pace with rising shipbuilding demand.

KOREA Line Corp, South Korea's third-largest shipping company by market value, plans to spend 630 billion won on 10 bulk carriers and an oil tanker as rising demand for iron ore shipments causes rates to surge.

CHINA's port-handling capacity will increase by more than a third from levels at the end of last year to reach eight billion tonnes by 2010, the China Securities Journal yesterday quoted a senior industry official as saying.
