- New Delhi stays course on controversial shipping lane
India's government is sticking to plans to bore a major new shipping lane, officials said yesterday, despite objections by Hindu groups which say it would destroy a rock and sand ridge built by a god.

Norwegian shipping group Stolt-Nielsen has reported a smaller-than-forecast 7 per cent rise in fourth-quarter operating profit. Operating profit rose to US$47 million for the quarter ended Nov 30, 2007 from US$44.1 million a year earlier. The result missed an average expectation of a rise to US$54 million, and was at the lower end of estimates of US$41 million to US$66 million.
