Refrigerati' bollenti

Il conteggio mondiale dei contenitori refrigerati integrali si è incrementato ancora una volta nell'annata che va fino alla metà del 2004, allorquando è stato aggiunto al totale altro equipaggiamento per 100.000 TEU, equivalente al 10% in più. Questi sono i risultati del Censimento mondiale contenitori 2005 di Containerisation International, che ha rivelato una crescita della flotta significativamente più alta di quella conseguita nell'annata precedente (alla metà del 2003), allorquando era stato aggiunto un più modesto 4,5%. Anche le scorte degli integrali sono cresciute ad un tasso inferiore (circa il 7%) nel corso dell'anno precedente, alla metà del 2002.

L'ultima espansione è stata alimentata principalmente dalla solidità dei traffici containerizzati refrigerati integrali, che continuano a crescere organicamente, così come ad attirare altra attività dagli operatori reefer palletizzati e convenzionali. Anche il prezzo dei reefer è stato allettante nel 2004, dal momento che i costi di produzione non sono aumentati allo stesso ritmo di quelli del settore delle unità per carichi secchi. Ciò ha incoraggiato alcuni acquirenti (in particolare, i vettori marittimi) ad investire in modo più attivo rispetto all'anno precedente. Inoltre, si è verificato un marcato calo del numero dei vecchi box integrali ritirati dalla flotta, nonché di quelli dismessi o venduti ai fini dell'uso di seconda mano.

Le dismissioni di refrigerati sono cresciute drasticamente nel 2002-03, dal momento che i proprietari hanno accelerato la liquidazione delle unità operanti con quadri di controllo analogici della vecchia generazione e con gas refrigeranti CFC/HCFC. Questi ultimi sono diventati sempre più obsoleti, dal momento che sono difficili dal lato della manutenzione ed impopolari dal punto di vista ambientale. Il settore del leasing da solo ha dismesso più di 30.000 TEU di vecchi contenitori nel 2003, mentre i vettori marittimi hanno rivenduto ulteriori 45.000 TEU, il che comporta una cifra complessiva di 75.000 TEU. In confronto, nella maggior parte degli anni precedenti, le dismissioni annuali dei refrigerati non hanno superato i 30.000 TEU in tutto il settore.

Tuttavia, i dati relativi alle dismissioni sono diminuiti nuovamente nel 2004 sino a meno di 60.000 TEU in totale, il che si spiega in parte con l'eccedenza di crescita della flotta lo scorso anno. Anche la struttura della flotta refrigerata integrale mondiale è più omogenea di quella degli anni passati, dato che quasi nessun equipaggiamento è ancora operativo con CFC12 (R12) e sempre meno unità presentano miscele refrigeranti a goccia od alternative più obsolete dello R12, quale lo HCFC22. Tutti questi gas sono destinati a seguire il destino dello R12 che è stato vietato a livello mondiale a causa del suo potenziale di impoverimento dell'ozono.

Invece, la flotta attuale è quasi interamente composta di unità caricate con il refrigerante HFC134a (R134a) approvato dall'industria, il quale ha un potenziale di impoverimento dell'ozono pari a zero (anche se contribuisce comunque al riscaldamento globale). Un piccolo numero di unità viaggia con un'alternativa R404a, anch'essa dotata di potenziale di impoverimento dell'ozono pari a zero. Gran parte dell'equipaggiamento attuale allo stesso modo opera con sistemi di controllo "micro", sviluppati originariamente alla metà degli anni '90.

La flotta integrale mondiale sta diventando sempre più snella, dal momento che i più vecchi contenitori da 20 e 40 piedi vengono progressivamente ritirati e rimpiazzati quasi esclusivamente da 40 piedi high-cube. Questi ultimi da molti anni stanno guadagnando stabilmente terreno nell'ambito della flotta integrale globale e, alla metà del 2004, costituivano quasi l'80% dei TEU. La loro quota era prossima al 75% un anno prima. Lo high-cube da 40 piedi adesso rappresenta oltre il 90% di tutti i TEU reefer costruiti annualmente. Il resto è costituito completamente da 20 piedi, dal momento che da diversi anni non si verifica alcuna produzione significativa di reefers da 40 piedi (8 piedi e 6 pollici in altezza). Quanto ai 20 piedi, nel 2004 ne sono stati costruiti poco più di 10.000 TEU, mentre almeno 70.000 unità erano delle dimensioni di 40 piedi high-cubes. Questa produzione complessiva di 150.000 piedi ha rappresentato un altro record anche per i fornitori di box e di motori.

La flotta di 20 piedi integrali è cresciuta molto poco negli ultimi anni, ma dove sta perdendo terreno è in termini di quota percentuale. Il 40 piedi (8 piedi e 6 pollici) sta calando in termini sia di dimensioni che di quota ed è probabile che scompaia completamente nel giro di altri cinque anni o giù di lì. C'è anche una flotta residua di diverse migliaia di refrigerati di lunghezza pari a 24 piedi (Matson), 43 piedi (Chiquita Brand) e 45 piedi, ma anche questi a lungo termine andranno a perdersi. L'attrattiva dell'equipaggiamento da 40 piedi high-cube è corroborata dal suo prezzo concorrenziale se confrontato con le minori dimensioni da 20 e 40 piedi, con la sua diffusa disponibilità e con la maggiore capacità in termini volumetrici. Dal momento che la maggior parte dei carichi refrigerati è del tipo imballato a basso peso, esso in genere viene stipato prima di raggiungere il peso massimo permesso.

Ciononostante, la domanda di contenitori integrali da 20 piedi è stata stimolata in parte dalla recente dismissione di equipaggiamento da 20 piedi isolato/oblò. Questa tendenza è stata confermata nell'annata sino alla metà del 2004, quando alcune altre migliaia di tali box sono stati rottamati e la flotta isolata complessiva è diminuita di un altro 15% sino a meno di 25.000 TEU. La flotta integrale aveva, in confronto, superato gli 1,1 milioni di TEU alla stessa data. L'equipaggiamento isolato perciò ha rappresentato poco più del 2% di tutte le scorte di box refrigerati alla metà del 2004, rispetto al 15% di dieci anni prima.

E' previsto che il conteggio mondiale dei reefers con oblò cali a zero nel giro di pochi altri anni, dal momento che a loro volta anche le residue navi Con-Air verranno messe in disarmo. Gran parte (ma non tutto) dell'attuale equipaggiamento isolato è in fase di sostituzione con 20 piedi integrali. La maggior parte dei vettori - tra cui P&O Nedlloyd, Hamburg Sud, CMA CGM e Maersk Sealand - stanno sostituendo alcuni contenitori isolati da 20 piedi con 40 piedi high-cube integrali, dal momento che le loro operazioni refrigerate sono diventate del tutto del tipo "a spina". Infatti, molti proprietari prevedono alla fine la stessa dismissione della flotta di 20 piedi cui si è già assistito per la componente da 40 piedi (8 piedi e 6 pollici). La conseguenza sarà che aumenteranno i guai di tipo logistico, dal momento che la disponibilità di tale equipaggiamento diverrà meno garantita, il che a sua volta condurrà verso l'alto i costi e scoraggerà ulteriormente gli spedizionieri dall'accettarlo.

Com'è stato detto, in precedenza, i vettori marittimi rappresenteranno la maggior parte degli inserimenti di reefers integrali effettuati nell'annata che va sino alla metà del 2004, sebbene il settore del leasing in realtà abbia conseguito una quota maggiore di incremento della flotta. Tuttavia, l'ammontare delle unità noleggiate resta di gran lunga minore di quello delle unità di proprietà ovvero finanziate dagli armatori. I vettori marittimi ancora controllano due terzi di tutti i TEU reefer integrali, vale a dire il doppio di quelli in leasing operativo. Circa 65.000 TEU si sono aggiunti alla flotta di proprietà dei vettori nell'annata che va alla metà del 2004, spingendola in alto di quasi il 9%, mentre 36.000 TEU (equivalenti al 12%) sono stati inseriti dalle società di leasing. I vettori marittimi per lungo tempo sono stati i proprietari dominanti di tutto l'equipaggiamento reefer e non vi è alcuna indicazione che ciò possa cambiare nell'immediato futuro.
