Compagnie di navigazione di linea nordamericane: uno scenario mutevole

Il 1997 è stata un'annata ragionevolmente buona per i vettori nordamericani, dal momento che i volumi complessivi sono aumentati del 5% circa rispetto al 1996. E, a giudicare dai dati relativi ai primi sei mesi, forniti dal Piers/Journal of Commerce, questa linea di tendenza sembra destinata ad intensificarsi nel 1998, con una crescita grosso modo dell'8% in caso di estrapolazione delle cifre della prima metà dell'anno rispetto al resto dell'anno (v. Tabella 1). Sono statistiche promettenti. Tuttavia, ciò che le cifre mostrano non è necessariamente dovuto a sensazionali risultati delle compagnie di navigazione, quanto piuttosto ad attività che cercano di espandersi e di migliorare le economie di scala mediante fusioni, acquisizioni ed associazioni commerciali.

Comunque, che cosa è una compagnia di navigazione nordamericana? La definizione al momento è estremamente lata e deve esserlo per necessità. Linee di navigazione che erano propriamente nordamericane, vengono ora controllate da oltremare e, al contrario, compagnie in origine europee, centroamericane e sudamericane hanno ora salde connessioni con gli Stati Uniti ed il Canada. Ad esempio, la APL, che in precedenza costituiva l'archetipo della linea di navigazione statunitense, viene ora gestita dal proprio quartier generale di Oakland, ma la proprietà ed il suo listino di borsa sono situati a Singapore, mentre la Contship Lines, un tempo compagnia di navigazione anglo-italiana, pur essendo gestita in Gran Bretagna, appartiene ad una compagnia canadese, la Canadian Pacific con sede a Calgary.

Alcune cose, tuttavia, non sono mutate, almeno sino ad ora. Il più grande operatore nordamericano è ancora la Sea-Land Service con sede a Charlotte, nel North Carolina. La linea di navigazione in questione è ancora uno dei primi cinque vettori del mondo ed incrementa costantemente le dimensioni della propria flotta. Fino adesso, essa non ha compiuto ancora passi importanti nel settore delle fusioni e delle acquisizioni, avendo preferito accrescersi attraverso un'espansione organica e, in particolare, mediante lo sviluppo di alleanze.

La sua relazione con la Maersk Line, che ha avuto inizio nel 1990 in ordine al transpacifico e si è allargata sino a divenire un'alleanza globale di ampio respiro nel maggio del 1996, è - tra le relazioni di questo tipo - quella che dura da più lungo tempo. Insieme, esse controllano qualcosa come 500.000 spazi-containers a bordo. Le sinergie che si possono ottenere da questa relazione sono state sviluppate anche in altri campi, quali le associazioni commerciali nella distribuzione interna, come il servizio European Rail Shuttle (che accomuna anche la P&O Nedlloyd), e nuovi terminals come quello di Salalah nell'Oman.

A maggio di quest'anno, i due soci hanno rivolto un'istanza congiunta a diversi porti della Costa Orientale degli Stati Uniti in ordine alla proposta di sviluppare un grande terminal dedicato ai contenitori in grado di movimentare 550.000 carichi ogni anno.

La relazione della Sea-Land con la Maersk, secondo un portavoce, ha messo la compagnia in condizione di offrire ai caricatori tempi di viaggio più celeri, maggiore frequenza e flessibilità delle partenze ed una migliore copertura globale. In particolare, il patto ha rafforzato la posizione della Sea-Land nei traffici Asia/Europa e latino-americani.

Malgrado la propria relazione con il gigante danese, la Sea-Land resta pur sempre un operatore di linea spiccatamente statunitense. Essa è ancora il più grosso operatore containerizzato battente bandiera statunitense e fa parte del Programma Sicurezza Marittima e dell'Accordo Consensuale Servizi Intermodali, nel cui ambito i vettori si impegnano a prestare le proprie navi ed infrastrutture intermodali a supporto degli Stati Uniti in tempi di guerra o di emergenza nazionale. Infatti, a giugno di quest'anno essa ha altresì annunciato di essere stata prescelta - con contratto quinquennale - per gestire nove navi (su cento) della Flotta di Riserva di Pronto Impiego mantenuta dalla Amministrazione Marittima degli Stati Uniti. Il valore del contratto è pari a 41 milioni di dollari USA per tutta la durata dell'accordo.

Quanto al futuro della Sea-Land, risiede nelle iniziative di fusione od acquisizione?

Per diversi anni, nel settore si è sentito dire che ci sarebbe stato un ampliamento della sua relazione con la Maersk. Come ciò si potrebbe manifestare in pratica, solo i due soci potrebbero dirlo, e - naturalmente - essi non hanno voluto. Tutto ciò che la CSX Corporation potrebbe ammettere, giusto come farebbe qualsiasi altro grosso agglomerato, è che se il prezzo fosse corretto potrebbe vendere. Se le ulteriori pressioni di natura finanziaria derivanti dalla recente acquisizione della Conrail da parte della CSX attraverso la sua controllata ferroviaria CSX Transportation possano incoraggiare una tale transazione, solo il tempo potrà dirlo. Se la Sea-Land dovesse essere messa in vendita, si ritiene che in tal caso la Maersk potrebbe venire considerata l'acquirente più probabile; peraltro, la vendita della APL al Gruppo NOL è stata una vera sorpresa, e, quindi, chi lo sa?

L'acquisizione del vettore con sede ad Oakland ad opera del gruppo di trasporti di Singapore è stata portata a termine alla fine del 1997. La NOL, anche se ha comprato la compagnia, piuttosto che assorbirla nel Gruppo, ha "imbarcato" la sua posizione ed il suo piazzamento sul mercato. Di qui la decisione di fondere tutte le operazioni containerizzate del gruppo sotto il marchio APL. E' già stata avviata la razionalizzazione di tutta la rete della compagnia ed il presidente e dirigente in capo della APL, Tim Rhein, nello stimare i risparmi sui costi, ha dichiarato: "In termini di efficienza, non ci siamo ancora ma alla lunga finiremo per superare i 160 milioni di dollari all'anno".

I vantaggi derivanti dalla fusione sono notevoli. Secondo Rhein, essi comprendono l'espansione della sua rete globale mediante l'ingresso in nuovi traffici, come il transatlantico, e l'abbandono di collegamenti come il servizio della NOL Asia/Costa Orientale degli Stati Uniti via Canale di Suez, giudicato non conveniente dal punto di vista finanziario. Gran parte di questo lavoro di espansione è già stato perfezionato, e, dopo essere entrata nel transatlantico ed aver ampliato la propria copertura globale attraverso la New World Alliance con la Mitsui OSK Lines e la Hyundai Merchant Marine, la APL ha altresì fatto il proprio ingresso nel difficile mercato latino-americano mediante un accordo con la CAT (Crowley American Transport). La decisione di apportare tutti questi cambiamenti è stata immediatamente approvata. Rhein informa: "Abbiamo scelto la teoria del big bang al posto di quella del passo dopo passo". Ciò ora dà all'APL l'opportunità di concentrarsi sul raggiungimento dei propri vari obiettivi di risultato.

Quanto alla futura strategia, Rhein è molto chiaro: "Il mondo è cambiato. Cinque-dieci anni fa si sarebbero potuti fare soldi con il da porto a porto, ma oggi bisogna saper fornire qualsiasi cosa". Quello che ciò significa per la APL è il graduale riposizionamento nel mercato quale fornitore di logistica totale che offre, per mezzo del vettore e delle sue controllate, un pacchetto di trasporto completo globale.

La CP Ships sembra avere intrapreso un'altra via. La crescita della CP Ships da vettore di nicchia a soggetto globale è stata rapida. Sino a luglio del 1997, la compagnia era impegnata essenzialmente nel mercato della porta d'accesso transatlantica canadese, quantunque insieme ai due vettori Canada Maritime e Cast.

La compagnia con sede nel Regno Unito - ma quotata alla Borsa canadese - ora possiede altre tre linee di navigazione, la Contship Containerlines, la Ivaran Lines e la Lykes Lines. Il suo obiettivo è quello di fornire servizi porta a porta e da porto a porto efficienti. Il suo speciale successo è dovuto alla strategia che prevede l'impiego di due, e persino tre, marchi sulle rotte commerciali.

Con l'acquisizione della Cast, della Lykes e della Ivaran, la CP Ships ha rilevato delle compagnie che si trovavano in una difficile situazione finanziaria. Ad esempio, la Lykes si trovava nelle condizioni previste dal Capitolo XI della normativa statunitense in materia. Frank Halliwell, vice presidente esecutivo della CP Ships e dirigente in capo della Lykes Lines, ha spiegato com'è riuscito a conseguire buoni risultati: "Siamo nel mezzo di una fase di trasformazione delle compagnie, che è cominciata nel 1991 con la Canada Maritime ed è giunta a buon punto nel 1995 quando abbiamo rilevato la Cast ed abbiamo capito cosa avevamo a disposizione".

Ciò di cui la CP Ships dispone è un sistema. I fattori-chiave di tale sistema sono: l'innovazione del prodotto; il riposizionamento del marchio dopo un'ampia ricerca di mercato; infine, la riduzione dei costi sia mediante il rinnovamento del prodotto che mediante il perseguimento di maggiori economie di scala disponibili nell'ambito del gruppo CP Ships, quali la nuova contrattazione dei noleggi di contenitori, lo stivaggio ed il conseguimento di sinergie con i marchi gemelli.

Nel luglio 1997, la CP Ships ha annunciato di essere sul punto di intraprendere un'iniziativa innovativa. Piuttosto che acquistare una nuova compagnia, ha dichiarato di essere in procinto di entrare in un'associazione commerciale con la linea messicana TMM. Ai sensi di tale accordo, le compagnie metteranno insieme i marchi Ivaran, Lykes, TMM, TMG (Tranportacion Maritima Colombiana) e CTE (Compañia Trasatlantica Española) che, in linea con la politica della CP Ships, verranno tutti conservati. La nuova compagnia, una volta definito l'accordo il cui completamento è atteso per la fine di quest'anno, potrà disporre di una base di proventi iniziale pari a 1,2 miliardi di dollari, di un volume annuo di 1 milione di TEU e controllerà 40 navi nonché una flotta di contenitori approssimativamente pari a 150.000 TEU. Come tale, essa si classificherà tra le prime 20 compagnie di navigazione del mondo e spingerà ulteriormente in alto la CP Ships nella cerchia degli operatori di linea autorevoli.

L'aspetto del marketing è un altro fattore-chiave ancora del successo della nuova associazione e Halliwell ha dichiarato che, una volta portato a termine il riposizionamento della Lykes e della Ivaran, la medesima formula di successo sarebbe stata applicata alla TMM.

Naturalmente, non tutte le associazioni commerciali potranno avere le medesime dimensioni dell'accordo CP Ships/TMM. Il vettore Matson Navigation Company, con sede a San Francisco, società controllata interamente dalla Alexander & Baldwin di Honolulu, che è quotata alla Borsa di New York, ha annunciato nello scorso mese di luglio un accordo con la Sea-Barge Line, la TRG (Totem Resources Group) - operatore ro-ro con sede in Alaska - e la Intership. Questa associazione commerciale comporta l'impiego di due delle navi combinate ro-ro/lo-lo da 1.020 TEU della Matson, che erano in disarmo dal 1996, in un servizio da Port Everglades a Jacksonville e San Juan (Portorico). Ai sensi dell'accordo, la Sea-Barge si limiterà a noleggiare le due navi. Inoltre, la TRG e la Matson investiranno nella Sea-Barge; la Matson deterrà il 25% delle quote. La Sea-Barge offre servizi settimanali di chiatte su questa rotta sin dal 1985. Tuttavia, questi collegamenti saranno ora sostituiti dalle nuove navi ro-ro/lo-lo con effetto dai primi di novembre di quest'anno.

Per la Matson e la TRG, ciò rappresenta un significativo cambiamento della strategia. Fino adesso, entrambe erano impegnate in un traffico ai sensi della legge statunitense Jones (cabotaggio/traffici interni U.S.A.), ma il lavorare in un solo mercato espone i vettori ai cambiamenti dell'economia. Un portavoce della Matson ha spiegato: "Si sono verificati problemi nell'economia hawaiana per un certo numero di anni e non si risolveranno entro breve termine. Questo nuovo accordo dà alla Matson l'opportunità di diversificare e di impiegare nuovamente le navi in disarmo". Anche la TRG si aspetta di diluire i propri rischi mediante l'ingresso in questo nuovo traffico.

I traffici Stati Uniti/Portorico costituiscono già un mercato assai competitivo, a dispetto del suo stato protetto, ed uno dei principali soggetti del settore è il vettore Navieras, con sede a New York. La compagnia, in origine denominata Navieras de Puerto Rico, appartiene alla Thomas Holt, che possiede altresì lo stivatore di Filadelfia Holt Cargo Systems. La Holt rappresenta inoltre il maggiore azionista della ACL, con una quota del 16,9% ed opzioni per altre 1,2 milioni di azioni, che - se esercitate - porterebbero la sua quota al 26%. La Holt in precedenza aveva tentato di acquistare la ACL alla fine dl 1996, ma aveva fallito in questo intento poiché in occasione dell'asta aveva offerto un prezzo troppo basso. La Holt aveva poi effettuato un nuovo tentativo alla metà del 1998, anche questo non andato a buon fine.

Vi è, naturalmente, una pletora di altre linee di navigazione nordamericane, molte delle quali sono operatori di nicchia che lavorano in modo indipendente e che ancora non sono entrate nel gioco del consolidamento. La Seaboard e la Tropical, che operano nel traffico Stati Uniti/Caraibi, ne costituiscono un esempio. Data la pressione concorrenziale sempre maggiore, saranno in grado di conservare questa indipendenza? Esse dicono di sì, ma solo il tempo potrà confermarlo.
