Le nuove frontiere della progettazione di portacontainers

Negli ultimi anni la principale linea di tendenza dei settori sia del trasporto containerizzato di linea sia del trasporto marittimo refrigerato è stata quella verso navi sempre più grandi, dal momento che gli operatori ed armatori hanno ridotto i propri costi unitari sfruttando le economie di scala ottenibili impiegando tonnellaggio più grande.

Inoltre, mentre le compagnie di navigazione di linea si sono concentrate sempre più sull'immissione in servizio di navi più veloci (24/25 nodi rappresentano adesso la norma per il naviglio di linea da 4.000 TEU), gli armatori di navi frigorifere si sono messi alla ricerca del modo per massimizzare le opportunità di carico dei containers sulle navi di progettazione convenzionale per rinfuse e pallets.

Le suddette problematiche ed esigenze hanno portato alla progettazione di nuovissima concezione del vettore di containers Malacca-Max e della nave frigorifera IMA reefer-type. Sotto qualche aspetto, entrambe le concezioni rappresentano una sfida interessante al tradizionale modo di pensare nel settore della navigazione di linea ed in quello del trasporto marittimo refrigerato. Almeno potenzialmente, i due modelli potrebbero cambiare radicalmente lo scenario concorrenziale dei due settori e comportare un notevole riassestamento della flotta attuale.

La Malacca-Max è un concetto che è stato sviluppato dal professor Niko Wijnolst, presidente della Netherland Maritime Network nonché lettore presso la facoltà di ingegneria marittima dell'Università della Tecnologia di Delft, e da uno dei suoi ricercatori, Marco Scholtens. In merito alle loro scoperte, è stato pubblicato un libro intitolato Malacca-Max: l'ultimo grido in fatto di portacontainers.

La Malacca-Max è una nave di 400 metri di lunghezza e 60 metri di larghezza e con un pescaggio di 21 metri. Essa dispone di una capacità di carico merci di poco inferiore a 243.000 tonnellate di stazza lorda, pari al notevole numero di 18.000 TEU, quasi tre volte maggiore - quindi - di quella delle portacontainers più grandi (la classe S della Maersk da 6.600 TEU) attualmente in servizio o sotto ordinazione. I contenitori sarebbero caricati in 24 file sul ponte di coperta e su 20 file affiancate sottocoperta. Dato che i contenitori sarebbero appilati su otto strati in coperta, Wijnolst suggerisce una capacità progettuale tecnica di 18.154 TEU.

Wijnolst ha fatto sapere che i costi teorici di costruzione della Malacca-Max sarebbero di 180 milioni di dollari ma che - commercialmente parlando - essa potrebbe probabilmente essere costruita con 150 milioni di dollari. Ma il professore ritiene che questo investimento, persino a questo prezzo, sarebbe "ben al di là delle possibilità di gran parte delle linee di navigazione containerizzate di seconda schiera". Perciò, solamente i più grossi tra gli operatori di servizi containerizzati sarebbero - a suo giudizio - in grado di permettersi la nave.

Wijnolst ha affermato che non vi sarebbero difficoltà tecniche nel costruire una portacontainers così grande, sebbene abbia ammesso che sarebbe richiesto più acciaio al fine di evitare spostamenti di torsione. Per questa ragione, la nave sarebbe costituita da un doppio scafo di 5 metri, dal momento che il suo peso sarebbe ben superiore alle 70.000 tonnellate di stazza lorda; ciò, rispetto alle 37.550 tonnellate delle unità di classe S della Maersk.

Comunque, per quali motivi Wijnolst e la sua squadra hanno fatto fare un tale salto quantitativo alle dimensioni della nave e qual è il mercato potenziale di quest'ultimo modello di supernave?

Wijnolst sostiene che è tutta una questione di economie di scala. "Molte linee di navigazione si trovano di fronte ad un dilemma" ha dichiarato. "Esse vorrebbero andare oltre la linea di demarcazione degli 8.000 TEU, ma a causa delle attuali limitazioni imposte dal Canale di Suez devono attenersi ad un massimo di 12.000 TEU per nave. Tuttavia, al fine di conservare una velocità di servizio di 25 nodi, ciò significa dover installare due motori, e vuol dire anche che il modesto incremento di capacità pari al 50% non è sufficiente a ripagare l'investimento di capitale aggiuntivo".

In effetti, l'accademico è convinto che l'economia correlata alla costruzione delle attuali navi Suezmax che caricano da 10.000 a 15.000 TEU non pagherà più. "Gli operatori di linea - ha dichiarato - dovrebbero invece guardarsi dai prossimi colli di bottiglia provvedendo alle dimensioni delle navi". Wijnolst ha sottolineato tale concetto riferendosi alla profondità di 21 metri dello Stretto di Malacca nel Sud-Est asiatico. Di qui l'adozione, da parte sua, del nome Malacca-Max per il suo nuovo modello di portacontainers, che a suo dire offre notevoli vantaggi inerenti alle economie di scala.

"La nostra ricerca mostra come il modello Malacca-Max presenti un livello di costo complessivo più basso approssimativamente del 16% rispetto alle attuali portacontainers da 8.000 TEU" commenta Wijnolst. "In un mondo di concorrenza da tagliagole, un risparmio del 16% può fare una differenza decisiva".

Sebbene il costo capitale di una nave del tipo Malacca-Max sia molto più alto, Wijnolst sostiene che il costo del carburante, le spese relative all'equipaggio ed i pedaggi di transito attraverso il Canale di Suez su base unitaria sarebbero notevolmente meno onerosi. "Un operatore di nave da 6.600 TEU pagherebbe circa 350.000 dollari per ciascun transito nel Canale laddove la nostra unità da 18.000 TEU pagherebbe poco più di 500.000 dollari" fa sapere.

"Per pura coincidenza" ha detto Wijnolst "abbiamo scoperto che, per offrire una velocità di servizio di 25 nodi, le navi Malacca-Max dovrebbero utilizzare 2 motori principali da 60 megawatt. Dal momento che questi ultimi sono le più grosse unità propulsive principali attualmente in produzione, ciò significa l'eliminazione dei costi di nuova progettazione ed il massimo in fatto di prestazioni una volta installati, il che va pertanto ad aggiungersi alla razionalità complessiva in fatto di costi delle navi in questione".

Tuttavia, il punto debole della concezione di Wijnolst resta il Canale di Suez che potrebbe impedire l'impiego di queste navi nel contesto dei servizi Europa/Asia, proprio i traffici, cioè, a cui esse sono principalmente destinate. Pochi porti degli Stati Uniti, poi, potrebbero accogliere tali leviatani.

D'altro canto, egli non ravvisa ciò come un problema. "Il Canale di Suez è un obiettivo mobile, dato che i dragatori dell'autorità ivi preposta ogni anno guadagnano mezzo di metro di pescaggio" ha detto Wijnolst. "Entro il 2009, anche la profondità del canale verrà portata a 21 metri".

Per quanto 10 anni possano sembrare un lungo periodo, Wijnolst ha ribattuto che un tale programma potrebbe essere già ristretto quanto ai tempi per i pianificatori portuali e terminalistici, i quali per quella data avranno bisogno di infrastrutture ed equipaggiamenti in funzione al fine di servire il tonnellaggio di nuova generazione.

Wijnolst ritiene che, nel caso venisse adottata la concezione Malacca-Max, tra i vettori potrebbe aver luogo un'altra fase di consolidamento. "Queste navi hanno troppa capacità di trasporto per due/tre vettori che vogliano farsi concorrenza" ha dichiarato. "Di conseguenza, la natura dei traffici Europa/Asia cambierà in modo straordinario con la loro immissione in servizio".

In Europa, egli prevede che avverrà una notevole razionalizzazione degli scali portuali, simile a quella degli anni '60 e '70, allorquando l'introduzione delle grosse rinfusiere e delle VLCC comportò l'abbandono da parte degli operatori di porti situati in Germania, Francia, Belgio e Regno Unito a favore di Rotterdam.

"Da un giorno all'altro, la situazione relativa ai traffici potrebbe mutare completamente, con Rotterdam - che dispone di una profondità all'ingresso del canale di 25 metri rispetto ai 15 metri della maggior parte degli altri porti - a dominare le attività europee di movimentazione dei contenitori e di distribuzione" ha detto Wijnolst.

Tuttavia, un autorevole portavoce del porto in questione ha un po' smontato questa illazione. "La nave di tipo Malacca-Max è un'idea molto interessante, ma è ancora in qualche modo qualcosa del futuro e quindi abbiamo un bel po' di tempo per valutarla. In questo settore di attività si tende a scoprire che <più grande è la nave, maggiori sono le opportunità di nicchia generate>".

In Asia la situazione è un po' più complicata, dato che esiste un numero maggiore di potenziali porti-nodo. Inizialmente, peraltro, egli ritiene che possano essere cinque le grosse navi a far da navetta tra i due porti di Rotterdam e Singapore, con una rete di navi di raccordo principali che si estende a tutte le altre località. Wijnolst, d'altro canto, sta valutando in che modo certi altri porti d'accesso, quali Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Kobe e Busan, possano essere coinvolti nell'operazione.

Dal momento che Rotterdam e Singapore sarebbero i principali beneficiari dell'impiego delle navi Malacca-Max, Wijnolst spera di convincere la PSA Corp e l'Amministrazione Portuale Municipale di Rotterdam a concedere qualche finanziamento al fine di far progredire il programma di dragaggio del Canale di Suez.

Basandosi su di una visita sul campo in Egitto, il professore ha stimato che costerebbe approssimativamente 1,65 miliardi di dollari far diventare più profondo il canale sino a 21 metri e che, con l'aiuto dei due porti, i lavori potrebbero essere completati in circa cinque anni.

Sul fronte dei porti, una delle maggiori preoccupazioni espresse dai vettori e dagli operatori terminalistici in ordine all'utilizzazione di navi più grandi è stato l'intasamento presso l'interfaccia e nel piazzale. "Le gru non rappresentano un problema" ha fatto sapere Wijnolst, il quale ha dichiarato che la Huissman-Itrec ha già progettato un prototipo di gru bordo-costa con un braccio di più di 70 metri che potrebbe essere utilizzato unitamente al progetto di nave Malacca-Max. Egli sostiene che con sette gru a lavorare la nave, potrebbero essere caricati/scaricati 18.000 contenitori in circa due giorni e mezzo.

Le operazioni nel piazzale, tuttavia, creano più di un problema; Wijnolst, peraltro, ritiene che questi ultimi siano di tipo tale da poter essere risolti in maniera relativamente facile se le correnti prassi dei vettori e degli spedizionieri fossero riviste e maggiori informazioni in merito alle modalità di trasporto fossero messe a disposizione prima che le navi arrivino in porto.

Wijnolst è convinto che un vettore e/o un raggruppamento di consorzi finirà per accogliere il suo concetto Malacca-Max e che entro i primi anni del nuovo millennio esso possa comportare l'istituzione di un nuovo ordine nel settore del trasporto marittimo containerizzato. Egli crede che i vettori che in questo momento stanno valutando le proprie prime incursioni nella lega delle post-Panamax possano ritenere prudente aspettare o persino ritirarsi dall'attività in attesa che le quote delle navi si alzino ancora.

Ugualmente rivoluzionario è la nuova nave combinata frigorifera/contenitori della danese IMA (International Maritime Advisers ApS), che - secondo il direttore amministrativo della società Jens M. Nielsen - "rappresenta il primo cambiamento significativo degli ultimi 50 anni ed oltre nella progettazione di navi frigorifere".

"Ci siamo imbarcati nella progettazione di una nave con la massima flessibilità operativa e con ulteriori opportunità di guadagno, specialmente nei traffici secondari" ha dichiarato.

Spiega Nielsen: "Data l'odierna crescente domanda di capacità containerizzata oltre i tradizionali carichi pallettizzati, sarà assolutamente necessario rimpiazzare la flotta mondiale di navi frigorifere con navi che siano in grado di trasportare più containers così come altri tipi di carico, specialmente quelli di ritorno, poiché le navi frigorifere oggi operano in direttrici di traffico a senso unico. Gli operatori di navi frigorifere tradizionali stanno altresì affrontando una concorrenza in aumento da parte degli operatori di linea che sta erodendo le loro attività primarie".

Di conseguenza, la IMA reefer presenta stive per contenitori a prua ed a poppa della timoneria, mentre gli spazi-pallet convenzionali sono situati centralmente. Possono essere caricati complessivamente 400 containers da 40 piedi, rispetto agli appena 100/125 TEU dei modelli di navi frigoriferi più tradizionali. Persino sulle più grandi e più moderne navi della classe da 600.000 piedi3, la capacità sopra coperta per i boxes raramente supera i 250 TEU.

Inoltre, su tutte le navi convenzionali/pallets i containers devono essere lavorati prima per poter poi accedere ai carichi frigoriferi che sono collocati nelle stive inferiori. Ciò comporta anche un costo extra per il fatto che le chiusure dei boccaporti devono essere rinforzate ed isolate specificamente.

"Nel nostro progetto, i due tipi di carico possono essere lavorati nello stesso tempo" ha fatto notare Nielsen. I containers possono essere trattati con le attrezzature presenti sulla nave, mentre i pallets e le rinfuse possono essere lavorati dalle gru a lato-nave (per una capacità di 550 pallets/ora). Ciò velocizza notevolmente le operazioni di movimentazione dei carichi. Inoltre, non vi è bisogno di coperture isolate per i boccaporti".

Nielsen suggerisce che, rispetto ad una tipica operazione frigorifera comportante 15/20 partenze dall'Europa settentrionale al Sudamerica, l'opzione di carico-contenitore della IMA reefer type possa ingenerare 12 milioni di dollari in più per un armatore di nave frigorifera media.

Un altro chiaro vantaggio della IMA reefer type è costituito dalla configurazione della stiva, che è piatta e - secondo Nielsen - "adatta ai pallets al 100%". "Sui modelli di navi frigorifere tradizionali, le stive sono modellate secondo la forma dello scafo e sino all'8% dello spazio frigorifero viene perduto a vantaggio dei carichi pallettizzati" ha detto. "Il nostro modello comprende altresì un ambiente ad atmosfera controllata, che è ideale per il trasporto di frutta esotica, di verdura ecc. L'atmosfera controllata al momento è installata solamente su poche navi frigorifere convenzionali/pallets ed i carichi che richiedono questo tipo di controllo dei gas, della temperatura e dell'umidità sono da sempre riserva di caccia delle linee di navigazione impegnate nei trasporti containerizzati".

Nielsen sostiene altresì che la stiva potrebbe essere utilizzata per merci generali stivate convenzionalmente e persino per automobili (fino a 650 autovetture standard) nei viaggi di ritorno.

La velocità di progettazione della IMA reefer type varia da 21 a 24 nodi a seconda della varietà del carico, con un prezzo stimato per unità nuova dell'ordine di 30-35 milioni di dollari. "Ciò è paragonabile a quello delle attuali navi frigorifere, ma, dati i minori costi di manutenzione, i costi operativi assai concorrenziali ed una flessibilità reale che consente di conseguire ulteriori entrate, gli armatori come potranno permettersi di restare attaccati al tonnellaggio di progettazione standard?" ha dichiarato Nielsen.

Il dirigente ritiene che dato il miglioramento della situazione dei traffici in Asia, potrebbe esservi una domanda da parte degli armatori di circa 10 IMA reefer types all'anno.

Nielsen afferma che importanti armatori, quali la Cool Carriers, la Lauritzen Reefers, la Seatrade e la Restis, hanno espresso interesse per il progetto; peraltro, nessun contratto è stato ancora firmato al riguardo. Egli spera, comunque, che un primo quantitativo di ordinazioni possa essere confermato per la fine del 1999.

Due modelli di nave radicalmente diversi in due dei settori maggiormente concorrenziali del trasporto marittimo potrebbero provocare uno scossone mai visto prima.
