Una boccata d'aria fresca

Alcuni trasportatori stanno estendendo anche al trasporto marittimo i modelli di prenotazione online caratteristici del trasporto aereo, nonostante la renitenza delle compagnie di navigazione.

Uno spedizioniere statunitense con una consegna per Kuala Lumpur va in rete e controlla le tariffe dei trasportatori (le door-to-door, naturalmente). Soddisfatto, inserisce i dettagli della spedizione, e, così facendo, si accorge che la sua spedizione ha tutti requisiti necessari per offrire una tariffa scontata. Inserite tutte le informazioni rilevanti, egli può quindi, con pochi "clicks" del mouse, confermare la prenotazione e dare disposizioni perché la consegna sia ritirata dai suoi magazzini. Ammesso che il cliente abbia inserito correttamente i dettagli della spedizione, il prezzo lui fatturato sarà esattamente uguale a quello che gli era comparso sullo schermo.

Tutto ciò potrebbe sembrare il top per un nuovo sito di logistica, ma non è così. In realtà è InternetShip, servizio che la compagnia di pacchi espresso FedEx (Federal Express) sta offrendo nel web su scala mondiale dal 1997.

Il servizio appena descritto non è altro che l'InternetShip al livello più rudimentale. Esso offre anche un ampia gamma di opzioni, compresa la possibilità di mandare per posta elettronica la bolla aerea di accompagnamento - il documento ufficiale per la navigazione che è stato appena creato online - al destinatario o a qualunque altra parte interessata che desiderasse riceverla.

Nonostante che i clienti debbano essere registrati per poter usufruire del servizio, anche la registrazione si può effettuare online già in molti Paesi, ed in altri basta solo una breve telefonata con un rappresentante del servizio clienti. La FedEx può, inoltre, integrare sistemi simili a quelli del computer del cliente nel computer di quest'ultimo in svariati ed ingegnosi modi, facendo sì che i servizi della FedEx diventino il set predefinito per le spedizioni nelle impostazioni interne del computer del cliente.

La FedEx - e come lei delle concorrenti quali UPS e DHL - fa sembrare la prenotazione online così semplice che gli spedizionieri statunitensi e quelli del resto del mondo si chiedono con stupore perché non possa essere così facile anche per tutti gli altri modi di trasporto. Una recente indagine sugli spedizionieri statunitensi di Morgan Stanley Dean Witter ("L'impatto dell'e-commerce: la situazione degli spedizionieri") ha mostrato come questi si aspettino un drastico calo negli affari condotti di persona (telefonate, fax e/o faccia a faccia) con le compagnie di trasporto dal 67% al 32% nel giro di due anni.

Forse senza neanche sorprendersi, Morgan Stanley ritiene che potrebbero trarre profitto da questo nuovo scenario gli operatori di trasporto che già fruiscono della più elevata automazione - tra i quali FedEx e UPS, autotrasportatori come American Freightways e Conway, e operatori terzi di logistica come CH Robinson, Eagle Global Logistics (ora EGL) ed Expeditors International.

Morgan Stanley ha pure rilevato che, con ampio margine, gli spedizionieri considerati nel suo studio preferivano fare affari in rete con una compagnia che movimentava lo stesso tipo di trasporti che essi stessi stavano acquistando, facendo pensare pertanto che i molti scambi in trasporto e logistica che attualmente si stanno originando non avrebbero successo. Per converso, i trasportatori globali di merci che combinano una visione neutrale delle offerte di trasporto e il controllo door-to-door del processo logistico, sembrerebbero avere i requisiti appropriati per diventare portali della prenotazione in rete.

I trasportatori stanno ora cominciando a raccogliere questa sfida, e sono occupati a perfezionare oculate strategie per permettere ai clienti di prenotare in rete le spedizioni. GeoLogistics, ad esempio, sta progettando di estendere la funzionalità del suo servizio online, GeoVista, dal trasporto ferroviario alla prenotazione delle spedizioni via mare entro la fine del prossimo anno. A dire il vero, un servizio di questo tipo è già attivo in prova per uno o due clienti.

Anche MSAS Global Logistics, dal canto suo, tra pochi mesi elaborerà progetti simili, almeno secondo quanto dice Alan Boylan, direttore generale della sezione trasporto globale marittimo, che però non si sbottona molto su quelli che saranno i progetti futuri dell'azienda.

I progetti di Circle International invece dipenderanno da quanto emergerà dalla recente sua annunciata fusione con la EGL, ma è comunque significativo che la EGL era già stata segnalata come operatrice leader da Morgan Stanley e che la Circle possiede già un proprio sito Internet, PricePoint, in cui si possono ottenere preventivi e fare prenotazioni per spedizioni interne agli Stati Uniti.

Nel mentre Panalpina ha offerto per circa un anno agli attuali clienti la possibilità, con tariffe pre-negoziate, di prenotare online la capienza del cargo, nonostante poi, per motivi in parte legali, la prenotazione dovesse essere confermata successivamente per fax o per telefono. Patrick Fluri, vice presidente sezione e-business della compagnia, mostra come la prenotazione online indichi i dati con maggiore chiarezza, dato che i dettagli della spedizione sono direttamente ed immediatamente immessi dal cliente nel computer del trasportatore.

"Abbiamo anche migliori strumenti per misurare i clienti che ordinano online, e conseguentemente maggior controllo dei flussi di merci", afferma Fluri. Attualmente egli calcola che circa un 10% delle prenotazioni presso Panalpina sono effettuate online, percentuale che potrebbe crescere fino anche al 40-45% se fossero incluse spedizioni più grandi con links specifici all'interno del sito. Le previsioni per il lungo periodo sono di ricevere la maggior parte delle prenotazioni online.

È rilevante notare però come da tutti questi esempi non scaturisca lo stesso modo di vedere i servizi online. Per Fluri, prenotare in rete attraverso il sito della Panalpina è un modo di rendere più efficiente lo scambio di dati tra spedizioniere e trasportatore, ma non necessariamente uno strumento di vendita o un modo per i clienti di ottenere preventivi. Boylan sembra essere d'accordo: "La maggior parte dei clienti dispone comunque di tariffe pre-negoziate: vedo i preventivi sul web come un'attività effimera, e dubito pertanto che possa sopravvivere a lungo".

GeoLogistics, al contrario, sembra vedere il sito Internet come un vero e proprio strumento di vendita. "Il nostro obiettivo, entro un anno, è di dare a tutti la possibilità di ottenere direttamente dal sito web i preventivi, 'cliccare' e poi prenotare", dice il direttore della sezione e-business della compagnia, Steve Farrand. Studi sulla clientela portati avanti da GeoLogistics hanno evidenziato un forte interesse per un tal genere di servizio sul web.

Tutti e quattro sono però d'accordo nel ritenere che questi servizi interesseranno soprattutto clienti di medie e piccole dimensioni, visto che molti contratti tra trasportatori e grandi imprese multinazionali di spedizioni ad oggi implicano un discreto livello di integrazione tra i sistemi, come usare lo stesso sistema dello spedizioniere, o links diretti (prima EDI, ora basati sulla rete Internet) tra le ordinazioni dello spedizioniere, oppure sistemi di produzione ed il sistema di management delle spedizioni del trasportatore.

Farrand della GeoLogistics si aspetta che la prenotazione online sia adatta per clienti con circa fino a 20-30 spedizioni al mese: "Per frequenze superiori il cliente cercherebbe di certo un sistema IT integrato", afferma.

Con questo non si vuole dire che i trasportatori non faranno affari sul web in modi alternativi. Uno di questi potrebbe essere gli scambi verticali aperti alla fonte o forniture in svariate industri, ad esempio parti automobilistiche. Un altro potrebbe essere, invece, l'emergente varietà di portali web della logistica, che offrono forniture a catena accanto a prenotazione di cargos e preventivi di tariffe.

Celarix.com è un esempio delle ultime citate da Boylan, che dice che la MSAS sta attivamente ricercando tali opzioni. E così fa Panalpina, con Fluri che afferma che un buon portale neutrale di logistica sarebbe più appetibile per gli spedizionieri di uno specifico solo di Panalpina. "I portali devono essere visti come neutrali dallo spedizioniere, così da offrirgli la possibilità di comparare tariffe e servizi", dice.

Una cosa che tutte queste strategie di web hanno in comune sarà la necessità per i trasportatori di avere un'interfaccia elettronica efficiente con il vettore di trasporto. Questo è un punto sul quale la maggior parte dei trasportatori concorda, ritenendo che mentre l'ambiente delle compagnie aeree è sempre stato in complesso abbastanza cooperativo, quello dei vettori oceanici no.

Una ragione del disaccordo è la differente relazione che i trasportatori hanno con linee aeree e di navigazione. Nonostante in entrambe le modalità di trasporto prevalga un atteggiamento del tipo "noi e loro", le compagnie aeree hanno da sempre guardato al trasportatore come al naturale venditore al minuto della capacità che essi offrono.

Un semplice contrasto tra bolla di accompagnamento aerea e B/L illustra la questione. Le bolle di accompagnamento aeree non solo sono completamente standardizzate dalla regolamentazione IATA per il traffico merci aereo, ma le compagnie aeree assegnano anche numeri per le bolle ai trasportatori, cosicché questi possano rilasciarle direttamente agli spedizionieri. Un trasportatore che riceve una prenotazione online pertanto è da subito in grado di creare una bolla di accompagnamento aerea con lo stesso numero, mentre per una B/L deve fare domanda al vettore.

Hugh Dunn, vice presidente degli operatori cargo oceanici per Circle International ed esperto del settore, sottolinea anche la complicazione ulteriore che scaturisce necessità di dover assegnare i numeri ai containers per spedizioni FCL. Il risultato, afferma, è che mentre una prenotazione online per il trasporto aereo è immediata, per le spedizioni marittime/oceaniche ci sarà sempre e comunque un ritardo. Serve una soluzione a questo problema. "Si può comprare una camicia in rete, si può comprare un biglietto aereo sul web, e se lo shipping internazionale pensa che sarà diverso, si illude", avverte.

L'evoluzione favorevole del commercio online per il trasporto aereo è in parte dovuta anche ad una svolta decisiva e fondamentale nelle relazioni tra trasportatori e compagnie aeree negli ultimi anni. Negli anni Novanta i gusti della FedEx presero d'assalto prima gli USA e poi il mercato mondiale dei cargos, mostrando come le spedizioni aeree fossero facili da prenotare, come si potessero rispettare degli specifici tempi di consegna e ottenere dei prezzi speciali.

Il successo della FedEx fu, almeno inizialmente, con spedizioni espresso di minori dimensioni, per poi espandersi rapidamente in scala verso articoli più grossi e soluzioni a problemi di logistica di imprese multinazionali di spedizione. Messi sull'attenti, compagnie aeree e trasportatori hanno risposto proponendosi di lavorare insieme in un sistema comune e trasparente, eliminando le complicate interfacce tra trasportatore e sistemi della compagnia aerea.

Ci sono molti esempi di questo tipo attualmente in opera, da Cargo 2000, uno speciale gruppo d'interesse IATA comprendente le compagnie aeree ed i maggiori trasportatori, che ha passato molto tempo a cercare di standardizzare il più possibile le procedure di sistema dei due gruppi, a GF-X, un sistema online di trading e prenotazioni tra trasportatori e vettori che si sta tutt'oggi ancora testando.

I vettori europei come Lufthansa e Swissair si sono anche indirizzati verso partnerships sempre più strette con le imprese di trasporto leaders, che, nel caso della Lufthansa, sembrano voler condurre all'integrazione dei sistemi IT con i partners selezionati.

Tutto ciò fa pensare che il trasporto merci aereo sarà sempre più veloce nell'offrire possibilità di prenotare online in tempo reale di quanto non lo sarà mai il trasporto merci marittimo, ma il fatto che molti trasportatori stiano già sperimentando sistemi di prenotazione online per il trasporto di merci via mare è forse un segnale che non si dovrebbe dare troppa importanza ai problemi. "Il ruolo dei trasportatori è quello di tramite tra vettore e spedizioniere", spiega Dunn.

E così evidentemente la pensa anche GeoLogistics, che progetta di offrire preventivi per il trasporto merci via mare e prenotazioni tramite il suo sito Internet GeoVista prossimamente. Nonostante tutti i supplementi gravanti sul trasporto merci marittimo - le CAF e le BAF che non esistono nel trasporto aereo - Farrand non vede alcun ostacolo nel fornire preventivi online. "C'è un maggiore livello di complessità nel calcolo delle tariffe del trasporto merci via mare, ma non è nulla di eccezionale per noi trasportatori - risolvere le difficoltà e poi dare allo spedizioniere un prezzo semplice", dice.

Webfreight, un nuovo servizio online lanciato per il cargo aereo dal Regno Unito nel 1999, esteso all'Italia il 1° Agosto di quest'anno, in procinto di concludere un affare per le spedizioni marittime con 20 Paesi Asiatici, mira ad ottenere lo stesso livello di semplicità anche per il trasporto merci via mare.

In Gran Bretagna, al momento gli spedizionieri possono collegarsi al sito Webfreight e, senza neanche il bisogno di registrarsi, introdurre i dettagli della spedizione ed ottenere un preventivo per il door-to-door per oltre 2.000 destinazioni diverse all'interno della Gran Bretagna. Webfreight non solo fa tutto ciò in 30 secondi, ma elenca anche una serie dettagliata di tariffe per trasporto merci aereo, movimentazione cargos, costo delle misure di sicurezza, AWB, documentazione per la dogana e levata cargos. La prenotazione può essere fatta con un solo "click" del mouse. Questa è una trasparenza rivoluzionaria anche per il trasporto aereo.

L'amministratore delegato, Roy Parmenter, non vede perché la stessa trasparenza non possa essere applicata al trasporto merci via mare, nonostante le più complesse strutture tariffarie. "Stiamo sviluppando un sistema semplice, che faccia a meno di CAF e BAF", egli spiega a proposito di un progetto per aggiungere il cargo oceanico al sito UK tra pochi mesi. "Vogliamo rendere il tutto il più semplice possibile, solo FCL o LCL in base a volume e peso, come per il trasporto aereo".

Come Geo Logistics, insiste Parmenter, non si tratta di fantascienza. "È solo lo stesso tipo di struttura in cui qualunque operatore di trasporto opera, con l'eccezione che si mette l'informazione sul web". Come per il cargo aereo, dice ancora, il servizio di trasporto marittimo delle merci opererà a mezzo di tariffe contrattuali negoziate con i vettori.

E neanche si può dire che i vettori oceanici siano stati meno cooperativi di quelli aerei, egli afferma. "Chiunque si renderà pure conto che l'e-commerce non è un fenomeno temporaneo e fino ad ora non li abbiamo trovati riluttanti a lavorare con noi", conclude Parmenter.
