Lo stato delle gru di banchina

Privatizzazione, una improvvisa recessione nell'economia e accresciuta concorrenza nel settore portuale. Le gru mobili di banchina non sono mai state così efficienti.

Gli investimenti in gru di banchina sono influenzati dalle condizioni economiche di breve periodo, e la comunità di affari internazionale spera che la recessione economica che tutti dicono stare per arrivare sia anch'essa così: di breve termine. Ma in un ambiente in cui l'incertezza la fa da padrona, gli operatori a terminal potrebbero guardare più attentamente ai meriti delle gru mobili di banchina.

Per i porti di maggiori dimensioni, il loro spazio d'azione in qualità di principali mezzi di movimentazione dei containers è limitata - le gru non consegneranno i livelli sempre crescenti di produttività attesi grazie alle nuove navi portacontainers dell'ultima generazione - sebbene, come affermano i maggiori manifattori del campo, stiano già facendo passi da gigante sul fronte della produttività.

Ma le gru mobili da banchina non hanno mai voluto competere direttamente con le gru ship-to-shore, spiega Davide Bertozzi della Fantuzzi Reggiane.

"Le gru mobili stanno svolgendo molto del lavoro affidato alle vecchie gru, e alcune sono già state assegnate al servizio delle navi più grosse, con un turnover secondo il quale le macchine più grandi sostituiscono quelle più piccole, a mano a mano che le dimensioni della nave crescono", dice.

"Dette gru sono anche utilizzate per estendere la capacità dei porti già equipaggiati con le apparecchiature ship-to-shore; alcune gru extra e mobili che possono essere impiegate al momento del bisogno possono aumentare la capacità complessiva dello scalo, o anche che si raggiungano i target di tempo e volume nei tempi prestabiliti. Solo pochi operatori vedrebbero in questi casi delle gru ship-to-shore", insiste Bertozzi.

Massimizzare la competitività

La tanto celebrata flessibilità delle gru mobili di banchina ha permesso ai porti di massimizzare la propria competitività in due modi differenti: attraverso la massimizzazione della produttività a tutti i livelli dalle navi panamax a feederaggio, chiatte e interfaccia ferroviaria, e/o mediante la possibilità di movimentare efficacemente una gamma più vasta di cargos, carico containerizzato o altro ancora.

"Con la flessibilità e la versatilità di una gru di banchina mobile, i terminal operators portuali possono neutralizzare le fluttuazioni dei mercati", spiega Peter Klein, marketing manager della Demag Mobile Cranes, proprietaria del marchio Gottwald.

"La flessibilità, la versatilità e la mobilità garantiscono agli operatori il migliore impiego delle apparecchiature. Con questo tipo di vantaggi, gli operatori non sono limitati alla movimentazione di un solo tipo di merci".

"Se, ad esempio, il mercato della movimentazione dei containers è in fase di decremento, gli operatori possono dirigere le gru su altri tipi di carico - pallet o rinfuse - senza dover necessariamente, pertanto, cambiare tipo di gru".

Allo stesso modo, il bisogno che hanno i porti di aumentare la propria capacità di carico e di diventare più competitivi sta facendo sviluppare un trend per i porti a vocazione di traffico di rinfuse di aggiornare le gru mobili di banchina per riuscire ad aumentare la capacità nella movimentazione dei containers, almeno questo è il pensiero che hanno sviluppato i vertici della Demag.

Gli incrementi in produttività sono sempre ben accette nell'arena concorrenziale da tagliagole che caratterizza le operazioni a terminal; allo stesso modo, la sempre crescente quota di operatori a terminal privati ha fatto crescere la domanda per operazioni furbe di movimenti di capitale da parte del management. Il terminal containers di Salerno in Italia è stato uno dei leaders in proposito, dice Bertozzi: le fattezze geografiche del porto hanno costretto in pratica il Salerno Container Terminal a dotarsi di sole gru di tipo mobile come equipaggiamento, e così si è potuto massimizzare l'utilizzo di questa attrezzatura di modo che ci fossero dei periodi di return on investiments assai contenuti.

Salerno ha portato due gru Gottwald HMK300 (e ne ha ordinata un'altra) per estendere al massimo le proprie capacità di movimentazione. Le due gru hanno una capacità di sollevamento di 27 tonnellate e un raggio d'azione di circa 50 metri, che permette di disporre i containers su fino a 15 file consecutive.

Frans Jol, managing director del SCT, spiega così: "Le gru che abbiamo sono molto più efficienti dal punto di vista dei costi di quelle ship-to-shore, e non ci resta che scegliere il modo migliore per impiegarle - tre sulla banchina o due su di essa e una su un feeder. Inoltre, si può massimizzare lo spazio di banchina per riuscire a servire un maggior numero di navi. Le gru possono essere messe l'una di fianco all'altra e non si spreca nemmeno un metro quadrato di spazio per lavorare".

Per un operatore multi-site, il vantaggio delle gru mobili è evidente e può essere esteso alla sua intera area di affari: un gru apposita può essere spedita per risolvere i problemi di movimentazione di breve termine, laddove altri macchinari hanno fallito, o dove una nave deve essere gestita in modo più veloce del solito per recuperare tempo sui programmi di lavoro.

Thomas Fritz, direttore delle gru mobili di banchina per la Liebherr, cita l'esempio del cliente con base ai Caraibi che ha una gru galleggiante regolare per spingere il livello di produttività dei diversi porti allorché necessario.

"La gru era fatta solitamente muovere intorno - e ha servito tre differenti porti in tre anni, e costituisce un eccellente esempio dei benefici della mobilità per il management delle merci".

Mentre la Fantuzzi Reggiane sostiene fermamente che gli operatori a terminal raramente avrebbero da decidere tra delle gru mobili da banchina e delle altre del tipo ship-to-shore, la Liebherr nota dei rendimenti per i terminals di meno di 150.000 Teus. Però Fritz dal canto suo sostiene che terminal di maggiori dimensioni generalmente preferiscono utilizzare gru mobili di banchina per dare supporto alle gantry cranes, o danno ad esse il ruolo di sostegno e backup al lavoro dei metodi tradizionali di gestione e movimentazione dei containers. La Demag Mobile Cranes, specialista del settore, non è per niente d'accordo.

Peter Klein è convinto che le gru mobili di banchina siano un'alternativa valida alle gru ship-to-shore per terminal di dimensioni piccole o medio piccole: "I costi relativamente bassi di acquisto, unitamente alla maggiore flessibilità delle gru mobili di banchina, compensa i maggior tassi di movimentazione dei containers delle gru gantry del tipo ship-to-shore. Le gru mobili possono costituire una soluzione efficiente dal punto di vista economico", sottolinea il manager della Demag Mobile Cranes.

Klein è sostenuto, nel suo modo di vedere, da autorevoli rappresentanti, tra cui Frans Jol, con la sua grande esperienza presso il SCT.

Spesso, sottolinea Jol, gli elevati tassi di produttività che i porti tirano in ballo quale principale giustificazione per l'impiego di gru ship-to-shore, sono irreali e dovuti principalmente a fattori landside che impediscono alle gru di lavorare in modo efficiente ai loro tassi ottimali di movimentazione.

"Tutte le gru possono fare oggi 40 movimentazioni l'ora, ma nessuno esegue regolarmente tutte queste movimentazioni. La media è di infatti 24 movimentazioni l'ora per la maggior parte di carichi gestiti mediante gru ship-to-shore, e con le gru mobili se ne fanno 23 l'ora!".

Il mercato

Il mercato delle gru mobili a banchina è stato evidentemente sostenuto in tutto il 2000, e detto trend di evoluzione sarà mantenuto costantemente per tutto il 2001.

Thomas Fritz, della Liebherr, fa riferimento alle 47 gru vendute l'anno scorso come principale riferimento alla solidità della sua compagnia. Allo stesso modo, la Demag ha consegnato 46 gru nel 2000, e ne ha altre 27 in ordine già solo nei primi sei mesi di quest'anno.

La Fantuzzi Reggiane è invece un po' più indietro nei livelli di competitività, ma la situazione sta per cambiare a breve, dice Davide Bertozzi. La sua compagnia ha 18 ordini attualmente in agenda, e si aspetta di arrivare a 20 per la fine di Giugno.

La compagnia si troverebbe all'inizio del 2002 ad un picco di capacità, potenziato anche dai progetti di espansione pianificati secondo i quali si andrebbe a occupare uno spazio di 170.000 m2 nell'entroterra di Ravenna.

Lo spostamento a Ravenna permetterebbe alla Fantuzzi Reggiane di introdurre novità e specificità alla gamma già vasta di gru mobili a banchina, potenziandone capacità ed affidabilità. Anche nel prezzo la compagnia sarà più competitiva.

La nuova capacità fornita da Ravenna sarà poi ulteriormente accresciuta dalla crescita dell'internazionalizzazione della compagnia - è già stata aperta una nuova struttura produttiva in Cina presso Xiamen, e altre sono in procinto di essere inaugurate in Sud America, Sud Est Asiatico e nel cuore del Nord Europa, dove tra l'altro sono pure presenti i principali concorrenti della compagnia - così da rafforzare la sua posizione globale e da estendere la sua leadership che per ora è limitata ai mercati dell'Europa del Sud.

"Abbiamo un forte interesse nel Belgio, che per noi è un mercato nuovo e di grande interesse", commenta Bertozzi. "Siamo ben quotati dal mercato, e offriamo componenti di prim'ordine per gru assai forti, conosciute per la loro solidità e robustezza".

Operazioni a livello corporate

L'arrivo di Peter Klein alla Demag ha segnato il principale cambiamento nell'assetto proprietario della compagnia: la Demag Mobile Cranes è una nuova impresa generata dalla fusione tra Mannesman Dematic (prima proprietaria del marchio Gottwald) e la divisione logistica del colosso internazionale Siemens. La società risultante dalle operazioni di fusione - la Siemens Dematic AG - poi ha creato la Demag Mobile Cranes quale società indipendente all'interno della Siemens Dematic.

Klein ed i suoi colleghi attribuiscono il successo dei loro prodotti sul mercato alla combinazione di caratteristiche intrinseche agli equipaggiamenti stessi e al network globale di servizi e vendite che permette alla compagnia di rispondere in modo veloce ai problemi e alle richieste della clientela.

"Poi c'è il fatto che i nostri vecchi clienti restano assai affezionati alla nostra merce e continuano ad acquistare da noi, e questo è senz'altro un segno tangibile della qualità fuori del comune dei nostri prodotti e del servizio che offriamo", dice ancora. La lista dei clienti "vecchi" è lunga, e comprende la P&O Ports, compagnia di livello mondiale, e vari porti e operatori dello shipping del Nord America, dell'Italia, della Spagna, della Turchia e degli Emirati Arabi Uniti.

La Demag ritiene che le gru mobili a banchina di modello Gottwald siano ormai riconosciute quali ottimi mezzi e stimate per il loro sistema di pilotaggio diesel-elettrico (soprattutto per le gru di maggiori dimensioni), per il design molto compatto e funzionale, per i sistemi di controllo frequentemente aggiornati facenti base su tecnologie dell'ultima generazione, e per la loro facile manutenzione. L'affidabilità è assicurata dall'utilizzo di sistemi puramente meccanici per le funzioni di base: sistemi di sospensione a semiasse e sistema di sterzo sincronizzato.

Le gru modello Gottwald sono sempre state anche all'avanguardia per le caratteristiche di sollevamento e governabilità. La HMK 300 E, ad esempio, è stata capace di sollevare fino a 100 tonnellate, mentre la HMK 360 E fino a 120t di massima. È un record mondiale.

"In particolare, ci preme sottolineare il successo recente della nostra risposta pot-panamax, la HMK 360 E, di cui sono state installate due unità di recente in Belgio", dice Klein.

Continui miglioramenti in design e tecnologie sono una priorità; "solo di recente, quattro gru Gottwald HMK 300 E sono state costruite con una torre di estensione che permettesse agli operatori di sollevare i containers dalle navi e di posizionarli uno sopra l'altro fino ad averne ben sei", ci riferisce Klein.

Innovazioni

Dalla parte della Liebherr, l'innovazione è vista come una delle vie per sottolineare la forza d'azione della compagnia nel suo mercato: circa il 38% degli ordini nel 2000 sono stati piazzati grazie ad essa, dice Liebherr. Tradizionalmente forte in Europa, la compagnia ha visto una forte crescita del suo impatto dirompente negli USA, dove una barriera fisiologica è stata superata negli ultimi 12 mesi.

"Abbiamo venduto quattro gru mobili a banchina a porti negli USA negli ultimi tre mesi; il concetto di gru mobile è ora sempre più accettato laggiù, e le gru mobili stanno guadagnando sempre più terreno ai danni delle gantry cranes. Ci attendiamo che detto trend acceleri nel 2001 quando le gru mobili lavoreranno a pieno ritmo e regime e i loro benefici saranno palesi a tutti", dice Thomas Fritz.

"Grazie alla privatizzazione portuale, abbiamo sempre più compagnie private come nostri clienti, e le nostre macchine si vendono praticamente da sole per l'alto livello di competitività che danno al porto che le utilizza, con tempi di return on investments più contenuti rispetto alle gantry cranes".

Il prossimo mese la Liebherr progetta di introdurre una nuova caratteristica tecnica al mercato delle gru mobili a banchina: un sistema anti dondolio elettronico per eliminare gli spostamenti dalla traiettoria in fase di carico - una delle principali cause dell'instabilità delle MHCs. Sviluppato dalla Liebherr Werk Nenzing (il braccio austriaco del gruppo Liebherr, che è specializzato in gru mobili a banchina) e dall'università tedesca di Ulm, il sistema è stato testato in un ambiente ideale, e ci si aspetta che le prove su campo inizino nel mese di Agosto.

"Tutto ciò costituirà un evento clou per i livelli di performances delle gru", spiega Fritz. "Gli operatori saranno in grado di ottenere livelli di performances superiori con questo nuovo sistema, perché non dovranno effettuare alcuna azione di aggiustamento per fronteggiare il dondolio in fase di carico, o rallentare durante lo scarico per lo stesso motivo".

"Prevediamo una crescita nei cicli all'ora delle crescite tra il 15% e il 20%, e avremo anche l'effetto collaterale di assicurare un output molto più stabile e continuo (è da notarsi che le operazioni per controllare il dondolio sono molto faticose per gli operatori che perciò tendono ad avere cali maggiori di produttività)".

Il sistema è stato in corso di sviluppo in tutto lo scorso anno e mezzo, dice Fritz, ed è stato brevettato dalla Liebherr un anno fa. Questo sistema anti dondolio sarà presto disponibile a tutti i clienti della Liebherr e si pensa apporterà notevoli benefici agli utenti e ai clienti finali.
