I nuovi prezzi dei containers possono anche essere ricresciuti del 10% nel 2000, ma la maggior parte di questa crescita è stata già ridimensionata dopo i primi tre mesi del 2001.

I prezzi dei containers per le rinfuse solide sono leggermente saliti nel 2000, ma sono di nuovo in caduta libera oggi. L'ultima discesa nei prezzi è stata così dura che praticamente tutto il guadagno dell'anno scorso - per la precisione circa un 10% negli ultimi 18 mesi - è stato annullato. Invero, i prezzi dei containers terminati sono scesi ai livelli ultrabassi del 1999, portando un irrimediabile senso di déjà vu ai manifattori di containers. Molti ritrovano le vecchie pressioni finanziarie e, sebbene la maggior parte della produzione di containers standard per rinfuse solide sia controllata da pochi gruppi dislocati in Cina, potrebbe essere in vista qualche nuovo progetto di consolidamento e fusione tra imprese produttrici.

Tornando alla metà del 1999, il prezzo di un container standard da 20ft si aggirava intorno a US$1,350, per produzioni cinesi con sede a Shanghai. Il prezzo corrispondente per impianti nel Sud della Cina era leggermente superiore e constava di US$1,400. Il costo, invece, di un container standard da 40ft (8ft 6in) era circa di 1,6 volte superiore di quello del container 20ft, e se la stazza era di 40 ft (9ft 6in) ovvero high-cube si poteva dover pagare un supplemento del 5% sul prezzo del container 40ft (8ft 6in).

Questi prezzi, che soino un minimo storico dopo ben oltre 25 anni, sono paragonabili a quelli quotati per le produzioni in programma per essere consegnate nella seconda metà del 2001. La situazione corrente contrasta duramente con quella del tardo 2000, quando il prezzo di un container 20ft era in media di US$1,550 presso le principali locazioni produttive nel Nord e nel Sud della Cina. Il prezzo corrispondente di un container 40ft (8ft 6in) ha poi toccato quota US$2,500, e ha raggiunto gli US$2,600 per i containers da 40ft di tipo high-cube. Anche a Shanghai, il prezzo di un container da 20ft è salito a più di US$1,500. I prezzi sopra indicati hanno tenuto per un breve tempo all'inizio del 2001, ma poi sono scesi drasticamente nel secondo trimestre man mano che la domanda per containers diminuiva progressivamente. Sono scesi ancora di circa il 10% solo nel mese di Maggio e all'inizio di Giugno.

Il valore complessivo della produzione standard di containers è stato, per tutto il 2000, superiore del 7% sui dati calcolati nel 1999. il maggior gruppo di manifattori di containers del mondo, il CIMC, avendo generato ricavi in eccesso di US$885,000,000 su una produzione totale di 655.000 Teus di containers standard per le rinfuse solide, ha indicato un prezzo di consegna approssimativamente pari a US$1,500 per i containers di 20ft. Il prezzo corrispondente applicato dalla compagnia per quelli a 40ft (8ft 6in) è ammontato a US$2,400, mentre per quanto concerne gli high-cube da 40ft si è rimasti intorno agli US$2,520.

Per converso, l'output mondiale di containers da 20ft ha fatto registrare un prezzo medio di US$1,400 nel 1999 per ogni unità. Il prezzo pagato per i containers da 40ft (8ft 6in) era US$2,240, mentre l'high-cube si aggirava intorno a US$2,350. I prezzi medi per i containers per rinfuse solide del 2001 (sotto US$1,450 per i 20ft) dovrebbero essere, stando alle previsioni, molto più vicini a quelli applicati nel 1999. solo nel settore dei containers frigo i prezzi dovrebbero resistere un po' di più, intorno a US$18,500 per high-cube da 40ft. Questo si confronta con una media di US$19,000 per gli high-cube da 40ft nel 2000 e US$17,500 per tutto il 1999.

Il piccolo recupero dei prezzi nel 2000 è stato un riflesso diretto della congiuntura favorevole del mercato dei containers, che è stato alimentato da una crescita più grande del previsto nel commercio globale per quell'anno e grazie anche alle nuove consegne richieste dall'aumento del numero delle nuove navi da containers. Questo si è tradotto in un record annuale di output di equipaggiamenti per containers e containers stessi, e si è raggiunto anche un picco storico di produzione. Soprattutto, l'output ha superato i 2 milioni di Teus nel 2000, oltre il 30% in più del risultato ottenuto nel 1999. Del resto, questo boom di produttività è stato di breve vita, e dalla fine del 2000 la domanda era già in discreto calo.

La situazione è poi peggiorata con la costruzione in massa di equipaggiamento per containers e containers in surplus in tutta l'Asia, e in particolare in Cina, che ha causato una saturazione del mercato in questione. Attualmente deve essere ancora venduta parte della produzione del 2000.

La maggior parte dell'attrezzatura è stata acquistata da vettori oceanici, che - dopo essere rimasti a corto di containers nel 2000 - si sono dati da fare nel comprare equipaggiamenti. Siccome moti vettori hanno registrato rilevanti aumenti nella domanda, e sono stati anche in grado di aumentare le tariffe su molte delle rotte chiave, non si sono accorti prontamente dei tentennamenti del mercato. Alcune compagnie di navigazione hanno pure pensato di aumentare gli ordini prima che l'anno finisse, dato che si attendevano forti aumenti nei prezzi.

Alcuni temevano anche un ritorno della congiuntura post 1908, quando i prezzi dei containers prodotti in Corea del Sud erano cresciuti di oltre il 50% nell'arco di soli due anni. Anche le previsioni più caute, nella metà del 2000, suggerivano che i prezzi dei containers di nuova produzione avrebbero toccato gli US$1,600 (per un 20ft) dall'inizio del 2001. invece detta crescita nei prezzi non si è mai verificata, e anzi gran parte dei containers ordinati non si sono rivelati essere altro che equipaggiamento extra.

Le compagnie di leasing sono state anch'esse colpevoli nell'acquistare più containers del dovuto durante tutto il 2000, sebbene non facessero altro che rispondere alle richieste delle compagnie di navigazione che volevano sempre più materiale. Molte di esse hanno reagito alla situazione creatasi tagliando drasticamente gli ordini di containers di nuova produzione. La maggior parte dei vettori oceanici sta facendo lo stesso, e riduce i propri ordini di containers nuovi, nonostante la consegna imminente di un ulteriore grande quantitativo di navi portacontainers e la continua disponibilità di finanziamenti agevoli.

È pertanto certo che l'output di containers cadrà sostanzialmente in tutto il 2001, e forse anche più in basso dei livelli del 1999. molte aziende di produzione cinesi di containers stanno registrando riduzioni significative nel volume di affari e la situazione si pensa che non migliorerà se non nella seconda metà dell'anno. Sono già stati cancellati ordini dalle agende, e non si sono esercitate le opzioni riguardanti gli aumenti di produzione.

L'inversione di tendenza si ha già prodotto un'inevitabile e, in qualche modo, inarrestabile reazione da parte dei produttori di containers. Molti hanno optato per la strategia, invero alquanto tradizionale, del taglio dei prezzi, allo scopo di attrarre un maggior volume di affari e mettere in difficoltà i concorrenti. Come si poteva prevedere, i tagli più aggressivi nei prezzi sono stati fatti dalle imprese della regione sovraffollata di Shanghai, dove si riscontrava della sovracapacità già prima della svolta del mercato. Però, la discontinuità regna sovrana nella regione in via di sviluppo dell'area meridionale del Guangdong, dove impianti per la produzione di containers sono molto concentrati, e anche presso le localizzazioni più rade del Nord, tra cui Qingdao, Tianjin e Dailan.

Uno dei fattori chiave dell'accelerazione della riduzione dei prezzi in tutte le regioni è stato l'accresciuta predominanza dei grandi gruppi di costruttori, capeggiati da CIMC e Singamas Holdings, che attualmente operano su diverse zone in un'ottica multi-plant e garantiscono ai consumatori un prezzo sempre più standardizzato applicabile all'intero network di industrie. La spiegazione di questo comportamento sta nel voler attrarre un numero maggiore di ordini da grandi compratori, che hanno bisogno di acquistare da diverse localizzazioni, e questo ha causato un restringimento nei differenziali regionali di prezzo. Come rilevato in precedenza, sebbene Shanghai offra ancora il prezzo più basso di tutti per containers di nuova produzione rispetto al resto della Cina, i prezzi sono stati anche severamente tagliati dalle imprese della Provincia del Guangdong e del suo hinterland. Così si è verificata un'ulteriore riduzione del differenziale di prezzo tra impianti produttivi meridionali e centrali, all'incirca di US$30-40 per containers da 20ft di nuova produzione.

Questo differenziale è rimasto un po' più largo per la produzione della Cina del Nord, e resta di circa US$50 superiore (sempre per i 20ft) se paragonato a Shanghai. Però, anche qui il gap si sta colmando lentamente. Le imprese collocate al Nord sono state costrette di recente a confrontarsi con i prezzi di Shanghai semplicemente per assicurarsi un adeguato giro d'affari. In media, le fabbriche del Nord devono quotare US$1,400 o meno (per un 20ft) un container nuovo, se vogliono assicurarsi degli ordini (almeno di 5,000 Teus se non superiori). La media di prezzi nell'area Sud del Guangdong è invece di US$1,380 (per un 20ft) e di US$1,350 nel distretto di Shanghai, se non più basso.

L'unico sollievo per i costruttori di containers è che almeno i costi delle materie prime e quelli di produzione stanno ugualmente scendendo. La stessa inversione di tendenza che sta colpendo il traffico containers da, per e all'interno stesso dell'Asia (e la conseguente minore domanda per nuovi containers) ha avuto anch'essa un impatto decisivo sul costo delle materie prime, compreso l'acciaio, il legname e vari prodotti chimi che l'industria dei containers impiega. Questi materiali - dopo essere aumentati un po' nel prezzo in gran parte del 1999 e per tutto il 2000 - stanno costando sempre di meno, con molti materiali da costruzione per containers scesi addirittura del 10% nel prezzo rispetto all'inizio del 2001. Lo stesso trend discendente ha interessato anche il prezzo dell'acciaio inossidabile, il principale componente per costruire un container.

Il prezzo di acciai inossidabili e Corten è cresciuto drasticamente nel 2000. Avevano toccato il minimo storico lungo un trend durato dieci anni, ma poi hanno recuperato sul prezzo il 25% nell'anno precedente alla metà del 2000 e sono cresciuti ancora fino al primo 2001. il costo dell'acciaio Corten ha raggiunto il picco di US$400 la tonnellata. Il prezzo medio del compensato nello stesso periodo è aumentato del 50%, superando US$600 al metro cubo. Quest'ultimo materiale proviene principalmente dall'Indonesia, che detiene de facto il monopolio della manifattura globale di pavimentazione per containers.

La produzione di Corten e di altri acciai speciali utilizzati nella costruzione di containers resta centralizzata in Giappone e Corea del Sud, sebbene stiano crescendo dei produttori di questo materiale in Cina. La disponibilità sempre più crescente di acciaio prodotto localmente naturalmente ha aiutato a far scendere i costi e ha contribuito, almeno in parte, alla discesa nei prezzi dei containers finiti. Lo stesso si può dire delle altre materie prime e componenti dei containers, dalla verniciatura ai pezzi di angolo di fusione, tutti ormai sempre più di produzione cinese, e a un costo di volta in volta inferiore.

Molti produttori sono ormai consapevoli e accettano il fatto che molti dei guadagni ottenuti nel 2000 sono stati rosicati dal costo elevato delle materie prime, cosicché i margini di profitto non sono granché cresciuti. Però, la maggior parte dei costruttori è riuscita a conseguire elevati livelli di produttività e conseguentemente a realizzare economie di scala dalle proprie linee di prodotto, con un continuo lavoro durante tutto l'anno. Ormai il quadro presentato non sussiste più nel 2001, e ci sono aspettative concrete che la discesa nel prezzo dei containers ultimamente verificatasi, unitamente ad un calo forte negli affari, causerà la chiusura di molti impianti produttivi o operazioni di concentrazione e fusione.

Particolarmente minacciato è il gruppo coreano Jindo Corp, che è in regime di amministrazione controllata da qualche mese. La compagnia in questione ha già chiuso le sue infrastrutture di produzione di containers frigo e si dice che stia vendendo i suoi tre impianti cinesi di costruzione di containers per rinfuse solide per pagarsi i debiti. Anche se queste ultime operano indipendentemente dalla Jindo, e non siano coinvolte, pertanto, nell'insolvenza dell'impresa madre, la compagnia coreana detiene una partecipazione di maggioranza nelle stesse.

Il probabile compratore sarà la CIMC, che già possiede sette fabbriche per containers standard localizzate a Guangdong, Shanghai, Dailan, Qingdao e Tianjin.

Altre operazioni del tipo coinvolgeranno impianti di produzione più piccoli in tutta la Cina, alcuni dei quali hanno già tagliato la produzione - per eliminare i prodotti in esubero - o sono addirittura chiusi. La Cina resterà, nonostante tutto, sicuramente ancora il maggiore centro di produzione dei containers. Questo Paese da solo produce il 90% dell'output mondiale misurato in Teus standards e poco più del 70% dei containers frigo.
