Grimaldi cresce

Un marchio ben noto nei traffici transatlantici, la ACL (Atlantic Container Line), è adesso saldamente sotto il controllo del gruppo napoletano a conduzione familiare Grimaldi Group. Quest'ultimo ora controlla oltre il 90% delle quote della ACL, avendo acquisito una partecipazione del 10% nella CMC CGM alla fine dello scorso mese di ottobre.

La Grimaldi e la ACL si integrano assai bene, dal momento che nel loro settore di operazioni non vi sono sovrapposizioni di sorta, di modo che l'acquisizione appare notevolmente logica dal punto di vista commerciale. La Grimaldi dispone di una notevole operazione multipurpose ro-ro settimanale a giorno fisso dal Nord Europa al Mediterraneo, commercializzata sotto la denominazione di Euromed, nonché di altri servizi dal Nord Europa all'Africa Occidentale ed al Sud America. La ACL, dal canto suo, effettua consolidate operazioni containerizzate e ro-ro sul Nord Atlantico, che si servono delle più grandi portacontainers ro-ro del mondo, ciascuna delle quali in grado di caricare 1.850 TEU su guide cellulari.

La Grimaldi ha già in vista la realizzazione di sinergie tra le due organizzazioni, con lo sviluppo di strutture operative interconnesse al fine di collegare la ACL alle sue reti già in essere. Nelle ultime settimane, ad esempio, è stato inaugurato un nuovo servizio settimanale che collega la Costa Orientale USA ed il Canada con il Mediterraneo.

Questo nuovo servizio fa seguito all'inaugurazione dell'operazione Nord America-Africa Occidentale a maggio del 2001 ed - inizialmente - adotterà un approccio simile, utilizzando Anversa come "ponte" tra la ACL ed i servizi della Grimaldi. I carichi verranno trasbordati nel porto belga dai servizi transatlantici settimanali della ACL ed il settimanale Euromed. Tuttavia, la Grimaldi intende alla fine rimpiazzare il servizio in questione con un altro diretto dai porti statunitensi dell'Atlantico e del Golfo del Messico a destinazioni nel Mediterraneo sia orientale che occidentale, servendosi di portacontainers ro-ro.

Le cinque navi della ACL scalano Baltimora, Portsmouth, Virginia, New York e Halifax, per poi arrivare ad Anversa al giovedì. I carichi vengono quindi trasferiti sulle navi Euromed della Grimaldi che partono da Anversa al venerdì. Ciò offre tempi di viaggio assai allettanti alla volta dei porti di Livorno, Salerno, Pireo, Smirne, Ashdod, Limassol, Alessandria, Savona e Setubal.

In questa fase, il servizio è perlopiù finalizzato al trasferimento dei carichi. Dato che al momento attuale non esiste un regolare servizio settimanale ro-ro dal Nordamerica al Mediterraneo, l'intenzione è quella di colmare il vuoto nel mercato e di soddisfare le esigenze dei caricatori in questo traffico. C'è già un certo numero di servizi containerizzati in esercizio su questa rotta, ed alcuni ritengono che il nuovo servizio non sarà in grado di competere davvero sin da ora nel settore dei box. Tuttavia, il piano è chiaramente mirato al traffico containerizzato, una volta che la struttura di servizio diretto sarà operativa.

La ACL aveva dato il via ad un servizio Nord America-Africa Occidentale con la Grimaldi nel 2001 che si è rivelato di grande successo, con risultati migliori di quelli attesi. Esso è in condizione di offrire un servizio competitivo per le spedizioni containerizzate, dal momento che in questo momento esiste una relativa carenza di servizi containerizzati dedicati che colleghino queste due regioni.

La connessione delle due reti di linea dovrebbe comportare benefici reciproci. Come sottolinea la Grimaldi, i traffici del Nord Atlantico sono afflitti in questo momento da uno squilibrio maggiore del solito a causa della forza del dollaro USA rispetto alle altre valute. La capacità della ACL di offrire servizi alla volta delle destinazioni dell'Africa Occidentale e del Mediterraneo dovrebbe imprimere un impulso ai suoi livelli di utilizzazione, che si attestavano al 70% nei primi nove mesi del 2001, rispetto al 75% dello stesso periodo del 2000.

Mentre Grimaldi si sta affrettando a promuovere le sinergie tra le due compagnie di navigazione, non esistono piani al fine di procedere ad una fusione della Grimaldi e della ACL in un'unica organizzazione. Secondo il direttore generale della sede di Napoli della Grimaldi, Emanuele Grimaldi, "la ACL si sta comportando molto bene e sia la Grimaldi che la ACL sono marchi forti nei propri rispettivi mercati. Ciò che tuttavia provvederemo a fondere sono le migliori prassi e procedure di ciascuna compagnia; potrebbero altresì verificarsi alcune acquisizioni di containers in comune, ad esempio, allo scopo di trarre vantaggio dalle economie di scala".

Quanto alla ACL, sono stati programmati ben pochi cambiamenti di rilievo, e tutti i segnali mostrano che la Grimaldi sta adottando un approccio del tipo "se non è guasto, non aggiustarlo" con il suo nuovo investimento. Olav Rakkenes, capo esecutivo della ACL, ha annunciato la propria intenzione di ritirarsi all'inizio del 2003. Ma, invece di pensare ad una sostituzione con una persona proveniente dalla Grimaldi, il vettore italiano ha confermato la propria intenzione di assicurare la continuità proponendo ad Andrew Abbot, attualmente direttore operativo, di divenire il nuovo direttore generale.

Dove invece la Grimaldi nei prossimi anni lascerà il proprio segno è nella flotta della ACL. Le cinque portacontenitori ro-ro da 2.908 TEU della classe A3 sono relativamente vecchie, sebbene non ancora prossime alla fine della propria durata utile. Tuttavia, dato il suo buon curriculum, la Grimaldi prenderà senza dubbio in considerazione l'ipotesi di ringiovanire la flotta della ACL nei prossimi tre-cinque anni. Inoltre, essa mirerà ad ampliare il numero delle navi gestite sotto il marchio ACL, ed esistono indicazioni del fatto che le specifiche inerenti a nuove costruzioni per due portaveicoli attualmente ordinate presso un cantiere croato possano essere modificate allo scopo di renderle utilizzabili nei traffici transatlantici della ACL.

Oltre alle ro-ro della ACL che adesso effettivamente controlla, la Grimaldi detiene una flotta di proprietà di 21 navi ro-ro multipurpose, che potenzia noleggiando portaveicoli sulle rotte-chiave. L'anno scorso, sono state consegnate alla Grimaldi cinque nuove unità, proseguendo gli investimenti da record realizzati nel corso degli anni '90.

A partire dal 1997, la compagnia di navigazione ha preso in consegna in totale 12 nuove navi, tutte quante più grandi e veloci di quelle che sono andate a sostituire. Ulteriori tre nuove costruzioni seguiranno nel 2002, mentre per altre sei è in programma la consegna nel 2003.

Le nuove costruzioni della Grimaldi sono per lo più attrezzate per il trasporto di automobili ed altri settori di attività ro-ro, ma dispongono altresì di un'apprezzabile capacità di trasporto containers. Ad esempio, la Grande Ellade e la Grande Scandinavia, consegnate dalla Daewoo nel 2001, possono accogliere a bordo 750 TEU ciascuna.

Cinque unità di nuova costruzione da 26.000 tonnellate di stazza lorda ordinate al gruppo cantieristico italiano Fincantieri dispongono di una velocità di crociera di 20 nodi ed offrono il 15% di capacità complessiva in più rispetto alla precedente classe ordinata dalla Grimaldi. Si dice che la loro composizione di carico ideale sia di 2.500 auto, 2.500 metri di corsie di carichi ro-ro e 850 containers, sebbene la loro capacità di accoglienza massima di containers sia di 1.321 TEU ciascuna.

La Grimaldi ha rafforzato l'Euromed mediante la consegna di nuove navi nel corso del 2001, e così ora essa utilizza cinque navi gemelle in una rotazione settimanale a giorno fisso che comprende 18 porti. Le cinque navi sotto ordinazione presso la Fincantieri - la cui consegna è prevista nel 2002/3 - sono state previste al fine di consentire l'ulteriore miglioramento dell'Euromed, che è destinato a diventare bisettimanale entro i prossimi due anni. Inoltre, il nuovo tonnellaggio immesso in servizio nel corso del 2001 è stato utilizzato allo scopo di migliorare i servizi dell'Africa Occidentale e del Sud America, che adesso partono entrambi ogni 10 giorni.

Le operazioni inframediterranee della Grimaldi sono state rafforzate allo stesso modo, in gran parte attraverso il ridislocamento di tonnellaggio dismesso per l'arrivo di nuove navi. La Adriatic Line, che collega Ravenna, Capodistria, Venezia, Ashdod, Haifa, Smirne e Pireo, è adesso settimanale a giorno fisso, mentre vi è una nuova navetta dedicata da Ravenna a Venezia, Capodistria ed Alessandria.

I servizi ro-ro dall'Italia alla Spagna sono stati incrementati, negli ultimi mesi, mediante l'impiego di una nave ro-ro multipurpose, la Setubal Express, sulla rotta Livorno-Valencia. La Grimaldi ha in programma di rafforzare ulteriormente il suo prodotto su questo traffico per mezzo dell'impiego di navi più grandi e veloci nel prossimo futuro.

Nel contesto della strategia della compagnia di incrementare la propria presenza nell'ambito dei traffici tra l'Italia e la Spagna, la Grimaldi ha sottoscritto un accordo con l'operatore ferroviario spagnolo Renfe Transported Combinados. Quest'ultimo ha istituito un'operazione intermodale denominata Tegri, attraverso cui le due società forniranno servizi logistici da porta a porta utilizzando la tratta marittima quale principale componente trasportistica.

La Grimaldi, mentre investiva rilevanti somme di denaro in nuove navi più grandi e veloci, ha provveduto altresì a migliorare la propria rete portuale europea. Il maggiore investimento concerne il nuovo AET (Antwerp Euro Terminal), un'associazione in partecipazione con la MexicoNatie, che ha cominciato le operazioni alla metà del 2001 ed attualmente comprende 800 metri di banchina supportati da un'area terminalistica di 250.000 metri2.

Con i lavori in corso, un'ulteriore fase di sviluppo amplierà l'area retrostante di altri 380.000 metri2 e la banchina per altri 200 metri. Tutti i servizi multipurpose Euromed, Africa Occidentale e Sud America della Grimaldi saranno in grado di fare scalo presso una infrastruttura, assieme alle portaveicoli dedicate della compagnia. Vi sono altresì piani finalizzati all'estensione della lunghezza della banchina fino a 1.500 metri e per acquisire gru per la movimentazione di containers bordo-costa per lo AET. La Grimaldi potrebbe, quindi, consolidare ulteriormente le proprie operazioni nord-europee in un centro di snodo movimentando anche le grandi navi della ACL, sebbene essa affermi che non sia ancora stato approvato lo scalo della ACL presso il nuovo terminal.

Le nuove attrezzature containerizzate rappresentano un altro settore in cui la Grimaldi ha effettuato investimenti: negli ultimi due anni, la compagnia di navigazione ha acquisito oltre 9.000 TEU, nell'ambito della propria strategia finalizzata all'incremento della propria flotta di box. La flotta di containers della Grimaldi ora si attesta a più di 31.000 TEU, mentre la scorta della ACL è pari a circa 22.000 TEU.

Le acquisizioni di box nel 2000 e nel 2001 si riferiscono a 4.000 contenitori da 20 piedi, 1.000 contenitori ventilati da 20 piedi, 2.500 unità high-cube da 40 piedi e 75 flatracks da 40 piedi. Il valore complessivo di questo investimento è dell'ordine di 15 milioni di dollari USA.

Con l'acquisto della ACL, la Grimaldi si è ora affermata quale importante fornitore di servizio containerizzato. La ACL ha caricato quasi 238.000 TEU nel 2000 e prevede cifre simili per il 2001. I containers costituiscono il 70% circa dell'attività di trasporto merci della ACL. Mentre il traffico containerizzato della Grimaldi rappresenta solo una parte minore dei suoi flussi di trasporto merci (per fare un esempio, con tutta probabilità è il 25% circa dell'Euromed), la compagnia è ancora un significativo trasportatore di containers tra il Nord Europa ed i suoi mercati principali nel Mediterraneo, in Africa Occidentale ed in Sud America. La compagnia si aspetta di conseguire entro il 2003 un tasso di crescita tra il 10 ed il 20 per cento nei propri volumi containerizzati.
