Un sistema per containerizzare le rinfuse

Oggi ci sono così tanti containers in giro per il mondo, ed è tale la frequenza con la quale ci ritroviamo dietro di loro nelle strade, che si potrebbe pensare "tutto ciò che potrebbe essere containerizzabile, lo è già". Uno studio realizzato nel 2000 da un importante consulente trasportistico ha mostrato che il 40% dei carichi non trasportati in contenitori potrebbe essere in realtà containerizzato, ma anche che talvolta è necessario un piccolo aiuto per far sì che tale teoria si tramuti in realtà.

Un caso tipico è quello del trasporto di prodotti secchi alla rinfusa, siano essi palline o polveri, chimici o generi alimentari. I containers ISO non si potrebbero immediatamente associare al trasporto di questo tipo di carichi, se non fosse che esiste un'attiva e fiorente industria che fornisce a caricatori e trasportatori di derrate secche alla rinfusa i sacchi adatti a tali necessità, nonché le istruzioni inerenti alle modalità del loro impiego. E' proprio la disponibilità di questi sacchi che può trasformare un normale contenitore ISO in un vettore per rinfuse. I grossi sacchi da 20 tonnellate sono diventati sempre più popolari negli ultimi anni quale risultato di un progresso naturale dai sacchi da 25 kg, normalmente pallettizzati prima di essere containerizzati, al FIBC (contenitore flessibile intermedio per rinfuse) da 1 tonnellata. Il mercato dei FIBC al momento è più grande di quello dei sacchi da 20 tonnellate, ma vi è una chiara linea di tendenza a favore delle dimensioni relative al container completo. Il fatto che i destinatari debbano essere in grado di movimentare un carico da 20 tonnellate in una volta sola sta inevitabilmente comportando qualche resistenza in alcune zone ed il fatto che i caricatori ed i ricevitori del prodotto abbiano la necessità di modificare le proprie strutture rappresenta anch'esso una qual certa barriera, ma, affermano i difensori della "sacco più grande", il movimento è saldamente ed irrevocabilmente avviato nella loro direzione.

I containers per rinfuse, cioè quelli predisposti con boccaporti superiori per il carico e con scivoli di scarico sul pavimento, hanno rappresentato una caratteristica sullo scenario containerizzato negli ultimi 30 anni e più. Per le operazioni di trasporto marittimo a lungo raggio, la logistica di queste "bestie" speciali può costituire un incubo. Un container per rinfuse potrebbe essere teoricamente adatto a movimentare un prodotto - ad esempio - dall'Europa all'Asia, ma spesso là potrebbe non esserci un carico di ritorno adatto o almeno in grado di essere trasportato in tali contenitori, e l'avere un'attrezzatura costosa in uso soltanto al 50% del tempo per quello che ci si proponeva di fare di solito non è una situazione economica.

In Europa è presente una flotta di oltre 20.000 containers per rinfuse con carico dall'alto, in gran parte lunghi 30 piedi, che vengono utilizzati quasi esclusivamente nei traffici infra-europei. Anche se queste unità possono essere utilizzate senza doversi servire di alcun imballaggio, frequentemente ci si serve di un sacco per evitare che il prodotto possa essere contaminato da sporcizia, polvere o ruggine ovvero per evitare che il contenitore possa essere contaminato dal prodotto. Inoltre, quando si utilizza un sacco, l'uso del container ne risulta spesso migliorato perché il box non dev'essere pulito o decontaminato e può essere riutilizzato immediatamente per il viaggio di ritorno. I sacchi di cui ci si serve per questi contenitori con carico dall'alto presentano uno scivolo fissato in alto per consentire il carico tramite imbuti ed un boccaporto in basso per lo scarico.

I sacchi in questione sono prodotti in polietilene od in polipropilene e vengono realizzati nelle varietà a trama intrecciata o compatta. In genere la varietà intrecciata è usata per le palline o i granuli mentre l'altra si usa per le polveri. I sacchi intrecciati spesso presentano delle cuciture con la conseguente possibilità di contaminazione del prodotto, mentre le saldature dei sacchi a strati sono immuni da qualsiasi perdita, sia all'interno che all'esterno. I sacchi intrecciati consentono al prodotto di "respirare" e sono perciò adatti - ed in effetti vengono utilizzati su larga scala - per le derrate alimentari, quali caffè, cereali e alcuni tipi di frutta e verdura.

I produttori di sacchi da imballaggio con sede nel Regno Unito sono i maggiori fornitori di sacchi adatti all'uso con i containers cisterna. Un importante fornitore è la Linertech, dove David Dowson ha dichiarato a Cargo Systems che, anche se a livello mondiale il mercato della fornitura di sacchi per box ISO è molto più ampio, la Linertech è maggiormente impegnata nella fornitura di sacchi di containers cisterna con carico dall'alto da 30 piedi.

Dowson ritiene che la Linertech sia uno dei maggiori fornitori di sacchi da imballaggio in Europa. Rivela infatti che la Linertech ha recentemente concluso un contratto con un'importante società europea di logistica per la fornitura di "molte decine di migliaia" di sacchi da imballaggio per i prossimi quattro anni. Questo contratto, ha detto Dowson, costituisce un accordo relativo ad un approvvigionamento esclusivo tale da portare la Linertech ad un "diverso livello di operazioni mediante il quadruplicamento dei livelli produttivi", parificandola ai grossi produttori americani in termini di quantitativi prodotti. Attualmente, la Linertech ha una fabbrica estesa per 40.000 piedi quadrati ad Elland, nello Yorkshire, ma "sta cercando di ampliarsi al massimo per far fronte alla domanda" e si sta guardando attorno alla ricerca di alternative produttive al di fuori del Regno Unito.

La ZPP (Zephir Plastic Products) nel Nord Yorkshire, sempre nel Regno Unito, è stata costituita nel 1947 ed è altresì un importante fornitore di sacchi in polietilene per i contenitori cisterna con carico dall'alto. David Walker della ZPP ha dichiarato che il 60% del proprio mercato è nel Regno Unito, mentre il residuo 40% è attestato nell'Europa continentale ed in Asia. Walker afferma che molti clienti della ZPP preferiscono i propri accessori e sistemi di scarico e hanno le proprie piccole manie in materia di sacchi di cui chiedono la fornitura, di modo che la ZPP lavora con i propri clienti per sviluppare sacchi che rispondano a richieste specifiche.

La ZPP ha anche sviluppato - tanto che adesso lo applica a tutti i propri sacchi - un occhiello dalle caratteristiche uniche che agevola la manipolazione del sacco all'interno del contenitore. L'occhiello viene saldato al sacco nel corso del processo produttivo e presenta un congegno elastico che si aggancia all'anello di sicurezza all'interno del container. Tutti i sacchi della ZPP sono prodotti in polietilene ed anche l'occhiello è in materiale simile. La ZPP afferma che il 90% dei suoi imballaggi è fatto con materiale riciclabile, compresi i nuovi occhielli, mentre il residuo 10% è costituito da PVC utilizzato per il nastro sigillante.

La Tiger Bulk Systems di Bridlington è un terzo produttore britannico che si concentra per lo più sulla fornitura di dispositivi da imballaggio per i containers con carico dall'alto utilizzati da imprese produttive o di logistica in ambito europeo, sebbene il direttore generale aggiunto Mark Lewis abbia dichiarato che essa rifornisce anche il mercato dei containers ISO di sacchi destinati a box da 9 piedi e 6 pollici la cui domanda continua ad aumentare.

Una società con sede nel Regno Unito, il 50% della cui attività consiste nella fornitura di sacchi per carichi dall'alto mentre il residuo 50% è destinato ai containers ISO da 20 e 40 piedi, è la Philton Polythene Converters, che è attiva nel settore da 30 anni. Il direttore generale Andrew Tisi afferma che la ditta ha prodotto il primo sacco da imballaggio per containers in assoluto nei primi giorni della containerizzazione. Tisi dichiara che la Philton è specializzata in attrezzature da imballaggio per i prodotti più complessi e difficili, quali il biossido di titanio, che solitamente si presenta sotto forma di polveri ed è molto denso. Quando alcuni di questi prodotti, che talvolta vengono caricati caldi, vengono inclinati per lo scarico, spesso resistono sino ad un angolo di 30-40° e poi cadono giù in un colpo solo.

Tisi, come altri produttori di sacchi da imballaggio, ha qualche preoccupazione in ordine a ciò che concerne la concorrenza più a buon mercato apportata da ditte con sede in Asia, ma ritiene che i suoi clienti siano assai consapevoli dell'importanza della qualità. A causa della natura rischiosa di molte delle derrate trasportate negli imballaggi della Philton, le conseguenze derivanti dalla fuoriuscita di prodotto dall'imballaggio possono dar luogo a richieste di risarcimento dell'ordine di molte migliaia di dollari. Il convincimento diffuso sembra essere quello secondo cui anche se vi è una differenza di prezzi con gli imballaggi di produzione asiatica, questa non è poi così cospicua come avviene per altri tipi di prodotto, sebbene è probabile che essa sia più significativa nei sacchi a trama intrecciata, laddove gran parte delle cuciture devono essere rifinite a mano ed allora in quel caso i meno cari laboratori asiatici possono avere buon gioco.

Il produttore tedesco Schleswiger Tauwerkfabric Oellerking è da lungo tempo affermato nel settore della produzione di sacchi da imballaggio così come di tele incerate ed altri prodotti simili. La Oellerking dichiara di essere uno dei maggiori produttori mondiali di sacchi da imballaggio e, anche se la maggior parte della produzione riguarda sacchi per box ISO da 20 piedi, essi producono anche per i tipi da 30, 40, 45, high-cube e per ogni altra dimensione a richiesta del cliente. I sacchi della Oellerking sono realizzati in tessuto di polipropilene e sono completamente riciclabili.

La Oellerking ha sviluppato e brevettato la volta Sweatking, cui possono essere adattati tutti i suoi sacchi da imballaggio. Esso garantisce l'assorbimento della condensa sino a 3 litri per metro quadrato di superficie della volta ed è ampiamente utilizzato per il trasporto di caffè, cacao, semi, fertilizzanti e mangimi per il pesce.

Altri sviluppi realizzati dalla Oellerking sono un sacco da imballaggio che elimina la necessità di barre di ritenzione per le paratie, il che significa un notevole risparmio di peso, e - unitamente con la società compatriota Lab Cargo Tec, un sacco da imballaggio che è in grado di trasportare e scaricare automaticamente grossi quantitativi di rinfuse liquide.

A livello mondiale, il mercato maggiore nonché in crescita è quello dei sacchi da imballaggio utilizzati per i containers ISO. La loro utilizzazione fa sì che tutti i containers ISO - ed in giro ce ne sono qualcosa come 15 milioni - possano essere adoperati per il trasporto di granaglie, palline e polveri alla rinfusa.

Oltre ai produttori europei e britannici che suddividono il proprio mercato tra contenitori per rinfuse da 30 piedi ed unità ISO da 20 e 40 piedi, esistono alcuni grossi produttori di sacchi per imballaggio con sede negli Stati Uniti che forniscono molte migliaia di sacchi per box ISO a caricatori, linee di navigazione ed altri operatori della logistica negli Stati Uniti ed in tutto il mondo.

La Insta-Bulk ha sede nel cuore della regione petrolifera, a Houston nel Texas. Il direttore vendite Shelley Stopper ha dichiarato, in modo non sorprendente, che una parte importante dei clienti della Insta-Bulk è costituita da imprese petrolchimiche. La Intra-Bulk produce e commercializza imballaggi sia a trama compatta ed a pellicola, gli Enviro-Liner, sia unità a trama intrecciata, i Global-Liner, per contenitori da 20 e 40 piedi con modifiche ai portelli ed agli scivoli nella parte terminal dell'imballaggio a contatto col contenitore.

La Intra-Bulk, come molti altri produttori, fornisce vari tipi e configurazioni di paratie che possono essere adattati all'interno dei portelli del contenitore, ovvero gli imballaggi Insta-Bulk che vengono eventualmente prodotti con un sistema di rinforzo integrale che non richiede materiale aggiuntivo.

La Stopper ritiene che il punto forte della Insta-Bulk sia, unitamente alla sua società gemella Dacro con sede nei Paesi Bassi, la fornitura di servizi di supporto tecnico ad alta qualità in tutto il mondo.

Una variazione sul tema è fornita dalla Pro Tech Liner Systems di North Charleston, in Sud Carolina, che è specializzata in imballaggi ad alta resistenza per il trasporto di pelli di bestiame e di altri carichi altamente corrosivi. Chiunque si sia avvicinato ad un carico di pelli avrà percepito la puzza che emana ed avrà visto quanto corrosivo possa essere il liquido che fuoriesce dalle pelli. Se esso entra in contatto col pavimento di un container, con le gomme del veicolo o con qualsiasi altra cosa, la vita del componente contaminato si riduce drasticamente, tanto che alle volte è una questione di ore.

La Pro Tech Liner Systems produce il RhinoLiner, che è specificamente progettato per resistere ai pallet ed ai carichi con elevatori a forca. Louis D'Eugeno della Pro Tech Liner spesso chiede ai potenziali clienti di provare a strappare un RhinoLiner con le chiavi della macchina, sapendo bene che esso non si bucherà. I RhinoLiners sono confezionati con una lunghezza di 6 piedi in più rispetto al container e la parte che avanza viene ripiegata dopo il carico, il che consente all'imballaggio di contenere e ritenere diversi galloni di fluido.

La maggior parte delle pelli vengono stivate dagli Stati Uniti alla volta di Cina e Corea ed il contenitore naturale per questo traffico è il 20 piedi. Tuttavia, lo squilibrio di box ISO negli Stati Uniti crea la necessità di movimentare grossi quantitativi di 40 piedi di ritorno in Asia e per questa ragione il box da 40 piedi viene sempre più usato per il trasporto di pelli, il che ha comportato l'aumento della domanda di RhinoLiner per unità da 40 piedi.

La containerizzazione è un concetto semplice, ma quando si gratta la superficie si scopre che sotto vi è un grande fermento innovativo e creativo in corso per migliorare e promuovere il settore dei sacchi da imballaggio.
