Trasporto ferroviario

La storia di successo della Freightliner

A tutto il 29 marzo di quest'anno, il fatturato della Freightliner è cresciuto dell'11% nel giro di un anno sino a 185,9 milioni di sterline ed i profitti operativi sono aumentati del 69% sino a 13,73 milioni di sterline. Le cifre rivelano che la divisione Trasporti Pesanti della Freightliner, operativa da soli tre anni, ora contribuisce per più del 50% ai profitti operativi. Ciò che è meno chiaro a prima vista è costituito dal fatto che anche i risultati della divisione intermodale della società le sono stati imputati.

I nuovi servizi unitizzati di rivali quali la GB Railgfreight ed EWS, per non menzionare le traversie dell'industria ferroviaria britannica, hanno eroso i margini intermodali della Freightliner negli ultimi anni. Peraltro, i profitti operativi, sebbene abbiano esordito da un punto di partenza basso, sono aumentati di un enorme 316% lo scorso anno sino a 5,4 milioni di sterline per un fatturato invariato: il miglior risultato di sempre della società.

Il segreto che sta dietro al miglioramento, afferma il direttore commerciale Peter Maybury, è consistito nel passaggio da un sistema a centro di snodo a raggiera ad un nuovo modus operandi fondato su servizi da punto a punto. Ciò ha consentito alla società di mettere a segno il colpo consistente nel simultaneo taglio dei costi e nell'incremento della capacità, almeno su alcune direttrici. "Ci siamo resi conto che il livello dei nostri profitti era inaccettabile e che, se avessimo continuato a fare le stesse cose, probabilmente avremmo ottenuto i medesimi risultati" spiega. "In precedenza, se qualcuno avesse voluto un nuovo servizio, noi probabilmente glielo avremmo effettuato, anche se i ricavi spesso venivano cancellati dalla crescita dei costi. Adesso abbiamo delineato un sistema di rete il più efficiente possibile e ciò ha ridotto i nostri costi che erano diventati critici".

La Freightliner ora si concentra sui propri servizi di nucleo dai principali porti marittimi del Regno Unito ai terminals terrestri - alcuni effettuati dalla Freightliner ed altri da terzi - nel nord-ovest, nel nord-est ed in Scozia. L'avere intrapreso un approccio ai servizi guidato dalle risorse piuttosto che indotto dalla domanda, secondo Maybury, porta alla conseguenza dell'ottimizzazione da parte del nuovo sistema dell'uso dei beni della Freightliner. Aggiunge Maybury: "Ci siamo messi in condizione di far fuori tratte caratterizzate da una inadeguata utilizzazione dei beni e da volumi inadeguati. Siamo stati in grado di eliminare attrezzature di cui ci eravamo serviti per l'allestimento dello smistamento a Crew. Abbiamo potuto fare un uso migliore della nostra forza-lavoro in termini di numero di ore produttive. Siamo stati in grado di convogliare in modo molto migliore ciò che mettevamo nei nostri terminals e di gestirlo in una maniera più organizzata e prevedibile.

Pertanto, abbiamo anche potuto indurre diversi dei nostri clienti maggiori ad un impegno più regolamentato alla luce di quel tipo di servizio e ciò ci ha fornito una linea di ricavi più solida".

La Freightliner adesso effettua 15 servizi giornalieri su Felixtowe e 13 su Southampton e, secondo Maybury, nel prossimo futuro ce ne sono in programma anche di più. Nell'ambito della riorganizzazione, tuttavia, gli orari dei servizi alla volta di Tilbury e Thamesport sono stati tagliati di circa un terzo, mentre i rivali della Freightliner sono stati svelti a mirare a quei mercati mediante nuove offerte.

Maybury minimizza l'impatto apportato dalla concorrenza degli operatori rivali sulla Freightliner e respinge l'idea che la società sia stata costretta a modificare il proprio sistema operativo per rispondere ai suoi rivali. "Ci siamo presi il 91% del mercato ferroviario containerizzato nel Regno Unito e sbaglieremmo a reagire contro nuovi servizi che in realtà stanno ai margini dei nostri" afferma. "I clienti che operano attraverso il porto vogliono servirsi di noi perché siamo in grado di offrire un pacchetto logistico completo: disponiamo di tutta una gamma di terminals interni con magazzinaggio e trasporto stradale, di modo che essi possono effettuare consegne locali in tempo a partire dalle nostre infrastrutture.

Se fossimo solo un operatore di trasporto merci ferroviario, saremmo fuori dal giro e ci meriteremmo di esserlo".

I piani finalizzati al miglioramento dei binari ferroviari sulle linee da Southampton e Felixtowe alla linea principale della Costa Occidentale per consentire il trasporto dei containers da 9 piedi e 6 pollici sui carri convenzionali sono decisivi ai fini dei programmi a lungo termine della società. "La data ufficiale per il collegamento di Felixtowe è il primo trimestre del 2005, sebbene si speri di riuscire a conseguire qualche accesso prima di quella data" afferma Maybury. "La chiave è costituita dal Tunnel di Ipswich, che dovrebbe essere completato per settembre".

Il collegamento di Southampton è stato al momento differito, nell'ambito della revisione di spesa da parte della Autorità Ferrovie Strategiche che ha altresì comportato la sospensione di varie sovvenzioni a supporto del trasporto merci. "La programmazione temporale di Southampton è alquanto poco chiara. Essa in ogni caso non era in programma sino al 2006 ed è stata sospesa per sei mesi, di modo che potrei immaginare che adesso abbia fatto dei passi indietro" aggiunge.

La Freightliner sta attualmente esaminando nuovi tipi progettuali di carri a pozzetto, nel tentativo di trovare una soluzione transitoria per il trasporto dei contenitori high-cube da Southampton, un mercato in cui la EWS, con la sua grande flotta di carri tascabili, ha battuto tutti sul tempo. "Stiamo cercando di appurare se possa avere un senso sviluppare un carro che sia in grado di trasportare gli high-cubes in modo più efficiente" afferma Maybury. "Il problema con gli attuali modelli progettuali è che i lo-liners di cui ci serviamo prendono quasi lo stesso spazio di un carro standard su un treno, ma ci si può trasportare un solo box da 40 piedi invece dei due che stanno su un carro normale. Stiamo cercando soluzioni che potrebbero essere più efficaci di quelle ora disponibili.

Stiamo investendo un sacco di soldi per essere sicuri di avere l'equipaggiamento giusto in marcia" afferma. "Negli ultimi tre anni, abbiamo acquistato un centinaio di locomotori della Classe 66 e stiamo anche rinnovando la nostra flotta di carri".

Malgrado il suo recente successo nel Regno Unito, tuttavia, la Freightliner non ha alcuna intenzione di dare l'avvio a servizi per il continente. "Noi non riteniamo che il Tunnel della Manica costituisca una grande opportunità e non ravvisiamo che esso rappresenti un ritorno adeguato rispetto ai tempi di gestione" dichiara Maybury. "Inoltre, in ambito britannico siamo in grado di controllare in gran parte la qualità dei nostri servizi. Con il Tunnel, invece, si dipende dalla rete europea per consegne di qualità alla propria clientela, ed io non sono proprio sicuro che la qualità sia ancora disponibile".
