Si riprende l'industria di costruzione di contenitori

L'industria globale dedita alla costruzione di contenitori ha appena portato a termine una delle sue annate maggiormente produttive, dato che la fabbricazione di box ha raggiunto una cifra record nel corso del 2003. Ci si aspettava, al riguardo, che la produzione complessiva raggiungesse i 2,2 milioni di TEU di tutti i tipi di contenitori, battendo il record precedente di 1,93 milioni di TEU ottenuti nel 2000, con un aumento superiore al 10%. Essa è stata inoltre superiore del 30% rispetto agli 1,7 milioni di TEU costruiti nel 2002 e del 70% rispetto agli 1,28 milioni di TEU fabbricati nel 2001. La domanda ha tenuto molto bene nel corso di gran parte dell'anno trascorso, anche durante il quarto trimestre che è tradizionalmente debole, il che ha indotto alcuni produttori ad aggiungere ulteriore capacità. Di conseguenza, nel corso del 2003 è iniziata la costruzione di più impianti per containers di tutti quelli realizzati nel corso dei cinque anni precedenti.

L'ultima produzione a livello globale comprende due milioni di TEU di equipaggiamento consistente in box marittimi per carichi secchi, dei quali praticamente tutti sono costituiti da unità standard di dimensioni equivalenti a 20 piedi, 40 piedi o 40 piedi high-cube. Altri 123.000 TEU sono stati realizzati quali refrigerati marittimi (integrali), 12.000 TEU di cisterne e 70.000 TEU di prodotti "locali", compresi sia i pallet-wide/swapbody europei che i contenitori interni statunitensi. Tutti questi tipi dimensionali nel 2003 sono stati costruiti in misura maggiore rispetto al 2002.

A puntellare il notevole incremento della produzione di nuovi box ha concorso l'ultima ripresa della crescita dei traffici containerizzati a livello mondiale, che era prevista in aumento del 10% per il 2003. Questa rinascita era già in atto alla fine del 2002, ed era stata supportata dalla consegna di oltre 600.000 TEU di spazi-containers su nave nel corso del 2003, che aveva indotto una richiesta di almeno 1,2 milioni di TEU di contenitori in più, con ordinazioni record di tonnellaggio aggiuntivo fino al 2005. Anche il numero dei box acquistati a fini di sostituzione si è incrementato significativamente nel corso del 2003, sino ad una cifra stimata in 850.000 TEU. Inoltre, anche l'utilizzazione dei box è rimasta alta su tutti i principali traffici, lasciando a disposizione poco equipaggiamento residuo presso i depositi di tutto il mondo.

Come nel 2002, una grossa fetta di tutta la produzione containerizzata del 2003 è andata al settore del leasing, che ha conseguito un aumento di un milione di TEU nel corso dello scorso anno. La cifra è paragonabile ai 900.000 TEU consegnati nel 2002, ed è oltre due volte il numero di unità ricevuto dai noleggiatori nel 2001, quando il mercato era al suo punto più basso precedente. Tra le società di leasing che nel 2003 si sono dimostrate gli acquirenti più decisi si sono segnalate la Triton Container, la Textainer Group, la GESeaCo e la Florens Group, ognuna delle quali ha acquistato oltre 100.000 TEU. Tuttavia, si è altresì verificato un aumento delle acquisizioni di equipaggiamento da parte dei vettori marittimi, per le loro flotte di proprietà/finanziate, in particolar modo nel corso della seconda metà del 2003. Le più attive di loro comprendono MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), P&O Nedlloyd, China Shipping Group e CMA CGM.

L'industria cinese di costruzione di box ha guadagnato ancora altro terreno nel corso del 2003, e questo paese adesso rappresenta oltre il 90% di tutta la produzione globale di TEU. I produttori cinesi hanno complessivamente costruito oltre due milioni di TEU per la prima volta nel 2003. Oltre a realizzare la grande maggioranza dell'equipaggiamento di unità ISO per carichi secchi e refrigerate, esse hanno anche aumentato la propria produzione di altri speciali, tra cui cisterne e box locali. Almeno tre nuove fabbriche cinesi di contenitori cisterna hanno dato il via alla produzione durante lo scorso anno.

Inoltre, sono stati costruiti cinque nuovi impianti destinati alla fabbricazione di box per carichi secchi, quattro dei quali sono situati in Cina, in luoghi in cui attualmente non vi sono altre infrastrutture per la costruzione di containers. Due hanno sede a Ningbo, una a Yantian ed una a Zhangzhou. La quinta fabbrica è situata all'interno di Qingdao, nei pressi della nuova area portuale di Huangdo, che è già servita da diversi impianti in funzione. L'apertura di queste nuove fabbriche ha introdotto altri 500.000 TEU di capacità annua di costruzione di contenitori, mentre i miglioramenti degli attuali impianti hanno aggiunto altri 600.000 TEU/anno al totale mondiale. Quest'ultimo adesso è attestato a più di 3,5 milioni di TEU; tale capacità è stata stimata partendo dal presupposto di lavorazioni a ciclo continuo su più turni. In precedenza, tale cifra aveva richiesto diversi anni per crescere dai circa due milioni di TEU/anno alla fine degli anni 'E0 agli oltre 2,5 milioni di TEU del 2002.

La capacità costruttiva di box a livello mondiale, perciò, resta ben al di là della domanda assoluta, sebbene tale sovrappiù debba essere visto nel contesto. Dal momento che l'industria globale di contenitori si è espansa, si è spostata in Cina, ed è sempre più ricaduta sotto il controllo di pochi grossi gruppi produttivi, l'esigenza di un margine di capacità considerevole è divenuta più necessaria. Ce n'Eegrave; bisogno per far fronte ad improvvisi picchi della domanda di nuovi contenitori al fine di evitare l'accumularsi di seri arretrati di produzione. Questi infatti tendono a "distorcere" il mercato ed in passato si sono dimostrati molto dannosi per l'industria.

Uno di questi arretrati si è verificato nel 2000, allorquando la produzione di box alla fine era arrivata ad un picco e molte fabbriche si erano ritrovate in serie difficoltà per far fronte alla conseguente frenetica attività. In quella occasione, la maggioranza degli acquirenti aveva smesso di effettuare l'eccesso di ordinazioni nel 2001, e ciò aveva peggiorato il successivo calo del mercato della costruzione di box verificatosi alla fine di quell'anno. Alcuni produttori sono stati sotto pressione allo stesso modo nel 2002, quando la domanda di contenitori è ancora una volta rifiorita improvvisamente, dopo essere stata depressa per quasi un anno.

Com'era di vitale importanza, l'eccesso di infrastrutture per la produzione di box a livello mondiale è stato relativamente limitato nel 2000, allorquando la capacità installata ha superato la produzione reale di meno del 20%. Numerosi impianti avevano in precedenza ridotto il proprio impegno al fine di risparmiare sui costi, mentre altri hanno chiuso o si sono fusi in reti più grandi. Di conseguenza, quasi due milioni di TEU sono stati costruiti nel corso del 2000 da infrastrutture complessivamente destinate a realizzare grosso modo 2,2 milioni di TEU/anno, il che ha costretto molti impianti ad adottare insostenibili operazioni su più turni.

Al contrario, l'introduzione di capacità in più nel 2003 ha mantenuto un robusto sovrappiù , equivalente al 50% nell'ultima parte dell'anno, e così ha messo molte fabbriche in grado di continuare a lavorare su uno o due turni. Malgrado le attive condizioni del mercato, ci sono state alcune richieste di rinvio della produzione ed i produttori hanno avuto ampio spazio per effettuare manutenzioni ordinarie e miglioramenti aggiuntivi. Inoltre, poiché l'industria cinese di costruzione dei box negli ultimi anni è stata sottoposta ad un notevole consolidamento, oggi in attività ci sono molti meno produttori singoli rispetto al passato, quando l'eccesso di produzione nelle fabbriche e l'eccesso di impegni erano molto più comuni. Anche se vi sono ancora circa 40 fabbriche che costruiscono attivamente containers in Cina, più del 50% sono adesso controllate da tre grandi gruppi.

Il profilo produttivo più sostenibile dell'anno passato ha apportato ulteriori benefici ai produttori ed ai loro clienti sotto forma di una migliore stabilità dei prezzi. In confronto agli anni scorsi, quando i prezzi tendevano ad oscillare bruscamente a seconda dei cambiamenti della domanda, essi sono stati piuttosto stabili in tutto il 2003, essendo leggermente aumentati sulla scorta dei maggiori costi dei materiali a partire dal secondo trimestre. Il prezzo medio di un contenitore standard da 20 piedi (franco fabbrica in Cina) è rimasto tra i 1.350 ed i 1.450 dollari per tutto lo scorso anno, raggiungendo il massimo livello nel corso dei mesi estivi del 2003. In seguito il prezzo è tornato sui 1.400 dollari, in linea con la tendenza stagionale. Il corrispondente prezzo per unità standard è ancora di circa 1,6 volte quello di un 20 piedi, mentre quello di un 40 piedi high-cube è di 1,68 volte più alto.

Malgrado un qual certo aumento del costo delle materie prime all'inizio del 2003, la maggior parte dei produttori è stata in grado di conservare i propri margini di profitto per tutto l'anno in misura migliore rispetto al 2002 ed al 2001. Nel terzo trimestre del 2003, l'acciaio Corten aveva ancora un prezzo di circa 350 dollari/tonnellata, e, malgrado la persistente robustezza della domanda, da allora è rimasto in buone condizioni di offerta. Per di più, la mancanza di qualsivoglia consistente consolidamento delle ordinazioni ha contribuito a mantenere la continuità della fornitura delle materie prime e ha evitato carenze derivanti da improvvisi balzi in alto dei costi di approvvigionamento.

La maggior parte dei principali produttori di box ha già riferito di miglioramenti dei propri profitti nel 2003, anche se i prezzi dei finiti restano ad un punto basso rispetto al contesto precedente. La CIMC (China International Marine Containers) che adesso capeggia di gran lunga l'industria globale della costruzione di box, ha fatto segnare un incremento del 50% dei propri profitti netti nel corso della prima metà del 2003 (rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2002), raddoppiando quasi il proprio fatturato. Si prevede che quest'ultimo raggiunga gli 1,25 miliardi di dollari per tutto l'anno, mentre i profitti netti del gruppo sono arrivati a 40 milioni di dollari nel corso del primo semestre dell'anno. La Singamas Container Holdings, ora affermatasi quale secondo maggior fornitore mondiale di box, si aspetta allo stesso modo che i ricavi ed i profitti al lordo delle imposte prodotti dalle proprie attività primarie di costruzione di box raggiungano un livello superiore al doppio di quello conseguito nel 2002.

La CIMC da sola si aspettava di fornire il 45% dei TEU globali nel 2003, tra cui circa 950.000 TEU di unità per carichi secchi ed oltre 50.000 TEU di refrigerati. Sono stati costruiti oltre 560.000 TEU (di tutti i tipi) nel corso della prima metà del 2003. In confronto, essa ha fornito quasi 700.000 TEU di unità per carichi secchi e 55.000 TEU di refrigerati nel 2002, il che indica che la produzione totale di TEU della CIMC crescerà di almeno un terzo nel 2003 (rispetto al 2002) e che questo grande gruppo sta senza fatica mantenendo la propria imponente quota di mercato.

La CIMC attualmente mantiene in funzione complessivamente nove impianti di fabbricazione di unità per carichi secchi, unitamente a due impianti per unità refrigerate, e si è attivata lo scorso anno su diversi progetti inerenti a nuove fabbriche. Essa ha recentemente dato inizio alla produzione di box standard a Yantian e Zhangzhou (quest'ultima in associazione con la China Merchants), nonché a quella di unità cisterna a Shanghai. Un ulteriore impianto per carichi secchi dovrebbe essere inaugurato anche a Ningbo all'inizio del 2004. Una volta pienamente operativi, questi impianti incrementeranno la capacità annua complessiva di costruzione di box della CIMC di più di 1,6 milioni di TEU. La società ha confermato che il 2003 è stato assai produttivo, ma è stato notevolmente diverso dal 2002, allorquando aveva raggiunto tutto sommato un picco alla fine dell'anno. Nel corso del 2002, gran parte della produzione della società era stata espletata nel secondo semestre, e ci si aspetta che ciò sia in contrasto con quanto accaduto nel 2003.

Anche la Singamas ha notevolmente incrementato la sua produzione nel corso dello stesso anno, avendo recentemente aperto una nuova fabbrica a Qingdao. Questa aggiunta porta a nove il numero delle fabbriche operative in seno alla rete della Singamas. Tra loro vi sono otto impianti per unità per carichi secchi ed un solo impianto per unità refrigerate. Tutte queste fabbriche (tranne una) hanno sede sul continente cinese e adesso offrono una capacità combinata di costruzione che supera i 600.000 TEU/anno. La Singamas nel corso del 2003 era ritenuta in grado di costruire oltre 420.000 TEU, il che dà alla società una quota del 20% della produzione globale, e ha conseguito un risultato di 230.000 TEU nel corso dei primi sei mesi. La sua produzione del 2002 ha superato i 300.000 TEU.

I gruppi sud-coreani oggi producono circa il 10% dei TEU complessivi presso le proprie fabbriche cinesi e sono capeggiati dalla Jindo Corp. Quest'ultima società continua ad operare in tre fabbriche in Cina e si prevede che essa realizzi risultati per almeno 135.000 TEU nel 2003, tra cui una notevole percentuale di tipi locali, nazionali ed altri speciali. La sua corrispondente produzione nel 2002 era stata prossima ai 100.000 TEU, e la società conserva una capacità di base di circa 200.000 TEU. Tendenzialmente 100.000 TEU saranno quest'anno costruiti dal tradizionale rivale sud-coreano della Jindo, cioè la Hyundai Mobis, che attualmente ha ancora un impianto residuo in Cina. La Hyundai in precedenza aveva venduto altre due fabbriche della propria catena, rispettivamente alla CIMC (nel 1999) ed alla Singamas (nel 2002). Tuttavia, essa fornisce ancora qualche supporto tecnico alle operazioni di fabbricazione dei refrigerati della Singamas.

Un gruppo cinese produttore di box in espansione è la SACI (Suzhou Asia Container International), che è operativa da sei anni e ha aperto il proprio secondo sito produttivo nel 2002, a Lianyungang. L'attuale fabbrica di unità per carichi secchi della società è situata a Suzhou. L'inizio dell'attività della LACI ha raddoppiato la capacità fino ad oltre 130.000 TEU e ha altresì dato impulso alla produzione sino ad oltre 110.000 TEU nel 2003. La CXIC (Changzhou Xin Huachang International Containers) è un'altra società che ha elevato il proprio profilo, con l'apertura di una nuova fabbrica a Ningbo nel corso del 2003. Questa società cinese produttrice di box da tempo fabbrica equipaggiamento standard e speciale presso i propri principali siti nei pressi di Shanghai, ma prevede un gran balzo in avanti della propria produzione nel corso del 2003 sino ad oltre 120.000 TEU. Anche la sua capacità annua si è incrementata sino a 200.000 TEU, in seguito all'inizio della produzione a Ningbo.

Il crescente predominio della Cina ha già visto l'uscita di gran parte dei concorrenti d'oltremare, dato che altrove nel mondo restano pochissime fabbriche di box standard. Appena tre sono ancora attive nel sud-est asiatico e tutte insieme costruiscono circa 75.000 TEU/anno; uno di tali impianti (la Java Pacific, in Indonesia), poi, appartiene alla Singamas. In India, a Taiwan, nelle Americhe, nei paesi dell'ex blocco orientale tutta la produzione di box è in rapida diminuzione oppure è già cessata. Gli operatori dell'Europa occidentale e meridionale sono sempre più confinati al servizio delle esigenze regionali o ad altri settori specializzati. La loro produzione combinata è adesso inferiore agli 80.000 TEU.

Lo scorso anno ha altresì segnato la fine di tutta la produzione containerizzata in Sud Corea, in seguito alla chiusura dell'ultima fabbrica residua, quella della Jindo ad Inchon. Questa mossa ha posto fine all'impegno di un quarto di secolo della Corea del Sud nella produzione di contenitori. Ci sono voluti dieci anni all'industria con sede in Corea del Sud per uscire del tutto da questa attività, dopo aver lasciato alla Cina la posizione di principale nazione produttiva di box. Tuttavia, come menzionato, le fabbriche con sede in Sud Corea restano attive in Cina ed in Indonesia.
