- Stop in Marseille in the European project to promote short sea shipping via container in the West Med
- The goal is to develop the use of container terminals and to simplify customs procedures
Last Friday, the Port Authority of Marseille has hosted the mid-term conference of the European project TERCONMED (conteneurs de terminaux comme éléments clés dans le transport maritime) which is funded under the MED program and aims to promote container traffic in Transport of short sea shipping (short-sea), the segment ever made prominently through the ro-ro shipping which provides for the boarding of ships on the truck. In particular, the project aims to promote this method of shipping in the western Mediterranean basin through the use of container terminal and the simplification of customs procedures.
- The partners of the initiative are the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, the Port Authority of Piraeus, the Italian regions of Liguria, Calabria and Sicily, the Regional Development Centre of Koper and FEPORTS (Institute for Studies and Cooperation Port Authority of Valencia) , which is the project leader.
- The activity will include the identification of existing short sea shipping in the western Mediterranean and the analysis of the effectiveness of the 18 container terminals in the basin. These terminals in the ports of Alicante (2 terminal), Castellon (2), Genoa (2: VTE and Messina), Gioia Tauro (1: Medcenter Container Terminal), Koper (1), La Spezia (1: La Spezia Container Terminal), Marseille (2), Palermo (1), Piraeus (1), Pozzallo (1), Savona (1: Reefer Terminal) and Valencia (3).
- TERCONMED also examining ways to use container from 45 feet for these trades to the type of vessels currently used on short sea shipping.
- The conclusion of the project is scheduled for April 2012.
