«Se da un lato l'aumento del prezzo del petrolio e di altre commodities potrà rallentare nel 2005 la crescita degli scambi e la produzione industriale, questi effetti sono stati compensati nel 2004 da un forte aumento degli scambi in molte nazioni e da una ripresa più forte del previsto in numerosi altri Paesi". È questa la sintesi del rapporto annuale "International Trade Statistics" reso noto oggi dalla World Trade Organization (WTO). "Nel 2004 - ha spiegato il direttore generale della WTO, Supachai Panitchpakdi - la crescita degli scambi mondiali non sarà influenzata negativamente più di tanto dal prezzo più alto del petrolio perché stiamo assistendo ad una buona progressione degli scambi e della produzione in Cina, America Latina e Africa. Inoltre abbiamo registrato una ripresa economica più vigorosa delle aspettative in Giappone. L'elevata domanda è dietro all'aumento dei prezzi del petrolio e di altre merci e i mercati sembra stiano vivendo bene tutto ciò».
Nel 2003 - rivela il rapporto - gli scambi mondiali sono del 4,5%, contro un +3% nel 2002 ed una flessione nel 2001.
