CP Ships: la costruzione di una fortezza latino-americana

Una delle domande ricorrenti tra quelle rivolte dai giornalisti al dirigente in capo della CP Ships, Ray Miles, nel corso di una recente conferenza stampa telefonica in seguito all'annuncio della proposta di un'associazione commerciale con la TMM (Transportacion Maritima Mexicana) è stata: "Perché una associazione commerciale? Perché la CP Ships non ha acquistato del tutto il vettore messicano?". La risposta di Miles è stata concisa: "Un'acquisizione non è mai stata presa in considerazione, non è mai stata nei programmi". Ma i giornalisti hanno insistito ancora. Ciò, forse perché essi non riuscivano a credere che la CP Ships avesse altro in mente che non fosse il predominio a livello mondiale. Dopo un anno di acquisizioni a tutto spiano, forse la sorpresa con cui hanno accolto l'annuncio ha costituito il segnale di un evento incomprensibile, così come imperscrutabili appaiono le ragioni che hanno condotto la CP Ships a negoziare un accordo di questo tipo.

La costituzione dell'associazione commerciale in questione al 50% tra la CP Ships e la TMM ha comportato l'aggregazione nell'iniziativa dei marchi Ivaran, Lykes, TMM, TMG (Transportacion Maritima Grancolombiana) e CTE (Compañia Trasatlantica Española) che - in ottemperanza alla politica della CP Ships - saranno tutti conservati. In termini di fatti concreti, la nuova società potrà disporre di una base iniziale di proventi pari ad 1,2 miliardi di dollari USA, di un volume annuo pari ad 1 milione di TEU, gestirà una flotta di 40 navi e controllerà un parco di contenitori di circa 150.000 TEU. Come tale, da sola potrà classificarsi tra le prime 20 compagnie di navigazione di linea del mondo. Una forza potente, ma lo è anche di più se si considera che si tratta sostanzialmente di un vettore locale con servizi che collegano gli Stati Uniti, il Messico, l'America centrale e meridionale con l'Europa, l'Asia e l'Africa.

Ciò, sebbene senza dubbio dopo la fusione si verificheranno notevoli cambiamenti sulle seguenti rotte di traffico:

  • Messico/Asia (TMM con APL);
  • Nord Europa/Costa del Golfo del Messico degli Stati Uniti/Messico (Hapag Lloyd/TMM);
  • Nord Europa/Costa del Golfo del Messico degli Stati Uniti/Messico (Lykes, APL, MOL);
  • Nord Europa/Costa Orientale degli Stati Uniti (Lykes, APL, MOL);
  • Mediterraneo/Costa del Golfo del Messico degli Stati Uniti/Messico (TMM/Contship/Lykes/Itallia/Zim);
  • Costa Orientale degli Stati Uniti/Sudafrica (Lykes/Safbank/MSC);
  • Costa Occidentale del Messico/America Centrale ((TMM);
  • Costa Occidentale del Messico/Costa Occidentale del Sudamerica (TMM);
  • Costa del Golfo del Messico degli Stati Uniti/Costa Orientale del Messico/Costa Orientale del Sudamerica (Ivaran/Grupo Libra/TMM);
  • Costa Orientale degli Stati Uniti/Costa Orientale Sudamerica (Crowley/APL/Ivaran);

La CP Ships ha senza dubbio impiegato un sacco di tempo nella ricerca di possibili soci; pertanto, quali sono i motivi che l'hanno spinta a scegliere la TMM? Commenta Miles: "E' importante avere lo stesso punto di vista e le stesse idee. E' questo, ciò che ci ha fatto incontrare".

Inoltre, la posizione della TMM quale gruppo di trasporto a più facce potrebbe anche apportare alla società risparmi sui costi e vantaggi nei terminals messicani nonché rispetto alla TFM (Transportacion Ferrovia Mexicana). Quest'ultima è la rete messicana privatizzata di cui la TMM possiede una quota azionaria dell'80%. Inoltre, la localizzazione centrale è ideale per le attività di nodo e di rete. Le sinergie sono evidenti di per se stesse e ciò corrisponde agli interessi della CP Ships. Anche se la linea di navigazione non era in vendita - e pare che proprio questo fosse il caso - certo non si può negare un interesse originario in tal senso; di qui, il mutuo accordo sull'associazione commerciale.

José Serrano, presidente della TMM, concorda e dichiara: "Si tratta di un'eccellente transazione per la TMM, in linea con la nostra strategia multimodale consistente nel far leva sulle attività di linea al fine di promuovere la crescita delle nostre divisioni di trasporto terrestre. Dal momento che l'attività di linea si consolida globalmente, è essenziale costituire associazioni che sviluppino la crescita, la forza e la capacità di realizzare profitti. Nella CP Ships, la TMM ha un socio NAFTA rilevante. Mediante questa associazione commerciale, ci divideremo le sinergie ed i vantaggi strategici della combinazione delle nostre operazioni di linea sovrapposte, conseguendo importanti risparmi che nessuno di noi due potrebbe ottenere da solo".

Il programma è ora quello di far progredire una già salda posizione sulle attuali rotte di traffico e di sviluppare nuovi collegamenti. Si tratta della prima fase nel contesto di una strategia che la CP Ships ha già perseguito nel settore del Nord Atlantico con la Canada Maritime e la Cast attraverso la porta d'accesso di Montreal. In effetti, con la nuova società, i collegamenti commerciali avverranno spesso sotto l'egida di due o tre marchi.

Ad esempio, le società attualmente effettuano un servizio Mediterraneo/Golfo del Messico/Messico nell'ambito di un'alleanza di cui fanno parte la TMM, la Lykes e la Contship, tre marchi della CP Ships. Infatti, sebbene la Contship non partecipi all'associazione commerciale, tutti i proventi della Contship provenienti da questo collegamento verranno assegnati alla associazione commerciale. Tuttavia, il collegamento della Contship dal Nord Europa alla Costa Orientale sudamericana non ne farà parte.

La nuova società, che non ha ancora un nome, avrà sede a Tampa, in Florida, dove attualmente risiede la Lykes, e - anche se ci vorrà del tempo - la Ivaran, la TMM, la TMG e la CTE alla fine tutte quante si sposteranno sotto lo stesso tetto. Il nuovo presidente sarà José Serrano, attuale presidente della TMM, mentre Frank Halliwell - l'attuale dirigente in capo della Lykes - sarà il dirigente in capo. Il vertice dirigenziale comprenderà elementi sia della TMM che della CP Ships, ma le strategie e le tecniche di gestione saranno quelle che hanno riportato al successo la Lykes e la Cast. Non che la TMM abbia avuto lo stesso tipo di problemi. Halliwell ha chiarito il punto: "Certo non abbiamo dovuto rivoltare la TMM. Non è nel Capitolo XI com'era la Lykes". Concorda Miles: "I risultati finanziari dell'attività di linea della TMM sono costantemente migliorati negli ultimi due anni, tanto che ne sono conseguiti l'accordo con la APL e l'acquisizione del 60% della TMG".

Di modo che, quale sarà il prossimo passo? Come si poteva prevedere, la CP Ships e la TMM sono un po' caute quanto a rivelare i propri piani. Tuttavia, esistono già alcune certezze. La CP Ships continuerà ad applicare la propria "formula magica" alla Lykes ed alla Ivaran ed una volta portato a termine ciò - ci si aspetta che possa avvenire entro l'ultimo trimestre di quest'anno - essa potrà rivolgere la propria attenzione alla TMM. Verranno condotte delle ricerche di mercato, seguite dal miglioramento del prodotto e dal ricollocamento ovvero dalla riaffermazione della società nel mercato. Ha dichiarato Miles: "Speriamo di poter migliorare la qualità del servizio e di poter apportare qualche modifica ad alcuni dei collegamenti".

Mattone su mattone, i soci cercheranno di edificare un vettore in grado di resistere alle pressioni di un mercato sempre più competitivo.
