Barcellona si è classificato nel 1999 primo porto container del Mediterraneo (esclusi i porti di transhipment), con 1.234.987 teu, Ha superato di un soffio (1.170 teu) quello di Genova, ma quel tanto che basta per spegnere le affrettate dichiarazioni dell'autorità portuale genovese che ad inizio anno aveva vantato un primato mediterraneo che, a conti fatti, non c'è stato. Il primato è semmai da ricercare nella merce containerizzata, che a Genova ha totalizzato 11.884.234 tonnellate, mentre a Barcellona si è fermata a 11.531.747 tonnellate.
Barcellona regina del Mediterraneo dunque nel traffico container, con un movimento molto bilanciato tra sbarchi (619.158 teu) e imbarchi (615.829). Ma il porto catalano ha potuto vantare nel 1999 un incremento del 12,77% nei container-teu, mentre il porto di Genova ha registrato un calo del 2,5% dovuto alla forte flessione registrata nei primi mesi dell'anno, poi gradualmente compensata, mese per mese, da incrementi del traffico. Barcellona al contrario ha potuto registrare una graduale ininterrotta espansione.
