15 ships hit by strike AS MANY as 15 ships and thousands of tonnes of cargo are expected to be affected by the week-long strike which started at the Patrick terminal at Botany Bay yesterday amid renewed claims that the stevedore was getting ready to lock out its workers at any time. A Patrick spokesman said yesterday that four ships have been diverted to the company's facility at Darling Harbour in order to minimise disruption. However, because of heavy shipping schedules it has not been possible for it to divert work to P&O Ports meaning "four ships will be stranded on berths at Port Botany while another six will have to wait at sea," the spokesman said.
Industry greets exemptions for single voyages A federal government decision to remove the need for foreign passenger ships to obtain single voyage permits while on the Australian coast will make the country a more popular cruise destination according to the chairman of transport and shipping committee at Tourism Council Australia, Phil Young. "This means that cruise operators can now build Australia into their schedules without worrying about the cost or concerns of getting permits approved," he said.
Qld govt pulling out of pilotage The Queensland government has taken the first step in pulling back from providing marine pilotage, with responsibility for pilotage at the ports of Gladstone and Port Alma transferred to the Gladstone Port Authority at midnight last Friday. Under the agreement the nine Queensland Transport pilots based in Gladstone will become permanent employees of the Gladstone Port Authority.
Bid for Turakina release THE Federal Court in Sydney will today hear an application for the release of the former South Pacific Shipping containership, the Turakina which has been under arrest since the collapse of the trans-Tasman operator in February. Today's application by the owners of the vessel is expected to be opposed by both Patrick, the stevedore as well as representatives of the vessel's master and crew, the latter seeking appropriate guarantees as far as their entitlements are concerned in case the vessel is released.
