Austal decides against buying NQEA AUSTAL Ships has pulled out of negotiations to purchase northern Queensland-based ship-building company, NQEA after the two companies failed to agree on a sale price. Austal Ships managing director John Rothwell said NQEA had decided against proceeding with a sale after Austal asked to negotiate the original sale price. Mr Rothwell said the due diligence conducted by Austal had identified a need to pay a lesser amount for the company than originally put forward.
Around the world in 48 days THE MALAYSIAN owners of Austal Ships’ latest 82-metre fast vehicle ferry, SuperStar Express, will attempt to set a new record for a circumnavigation of the world by boat in June. Austal’s marketing director Chris Norman said Austal -- which will co-sponsor the attempt with owners, Star Cruises -- planned to slash the current 83-day record held by the US Navy’s nuclear submarine, USS Triton, to 48 days.

Melbourne trades up THE port of Melbourne has registered growth in all trades, according to the Melbourne Port Corporation’s Trade & Transport Review, released recently. Total trade has increased by 5.6 per cent to 36.1 million revenue tonnes. The overseas import sector was the largest contributor to growth, accounting for 66 per cent of the additional 1.9 million revenue tonnes of cargo which passed through the port during the year. Commodity trade, excluding empty container trade, grew by seven per cent. General cargo rose by 7.7 per cent to 28.3 million revenue tonnes, with 72 per cent of this in the import sector.
NSW under Vic fire over road reforms THE NSW government came under strong criticism last week from federal Transport Minister Mark Vaile and Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett for stalling the implementation of key national road transport reforms. At an industry forum at the Trucks in Action ’98 show in Warragul on Friday, both politicians said NSW was holding up the national start-up of essential trucking reforms, such as the proposed truck mass limits increases.
