    The major French based international shipping company CGM has been selected as the preferred bidder for the liner shipping division, while the bulk trades will go to AUSCAN.
  • Unions at war with each other
    THE Australian Institute of Marine & Power Engineers was yesterday embroiled in a bitter dispute with the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) over the use of alleged scab labour aboard the Rig Seismic.
    The row came as the dispute between the Australian Institute of Marine & Power Engineers and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority boiled over.
    The row has been provoked by the apparent decision of MUA and the Australian Maritime Officers Union (AMOU) members to sail aboard the Rig Seismic with New Zealand engineers on board, considered to be scabs by the Institute.
    The vessel is now working in New Zealand waters.
  • Creditors take the Fifth
    Meetings of creditors of the four Patrick labor hire companies were adjourned for the fifth time yesterday, leading to speculation that the entire deal might now unravel.
    Immediately after the adjournment, the national secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, John Coombs, blamed the Minister for Workplace Relations, Peter Reith, for the situation.
    Mr Coombs said the "dead hand" of the Minister had intervened to stall agreement over the content of documents to end the waterfront dispute.
    He said agreement on the documentation had been close several times but thwarted by Mr Reith's intervention.
