L'intermodalisme est un axe majeur de la politique européenne des transports La quatrième "Shipper Conference" de l'ESC (European Shippers' Council), qui se déroule cette année à Marseille, est consacrée au transport intermodal. La question centrale qui sert de fil conducteur aux débats, est de savoir comment utiliser de façon optimale la capacité de transport existante, de façon à ce que l'Europe demeure concurrentielle dans l'économie mondiale. Sans surprise, la libéralisation du transport ferroviaire en Europe a été abordée dès les premiers discours. En Europe, l'intermodalisme reste un rêve, dans la mesure où la part du lion du transport intra-européen s'effectue toujours par la route. Mais il va sans dire qu'il y a d'autres raisons au manque de pénétration de ce type de transport: pour rendre plus attrayant le transport intermodal, il faudrait que les différents acteurs concernés deviennent plus efficaces et fonctionnement mieux. Les instances européennes jouent un rôle de catalyseur sur ces deux plans. Logiseine table sur une progression de 20% par an Avec un trafic multiplié par 2,5 depuis 1995, le service fluvial qui relie le Havre à Paris-Gennevilliers entre désormais dans une phase d'expansion, qui devrait se traduire par une capacité de transport portée à 32.000 TEU à l'horizon 2003. Début septembre, Logiseine enregistrait un trafic de 10.852 TEU. Ainsi, sur les huit premiers mois, plus de 93% du trafic réalisé en 1998 avait déjà été effectué. Wegtransport devient le partenaire d'EuroExpress pour le Benelux La société néerlandaise Wegtransport BV, basée à Amsterdam, devient le nouveau membre de l'alliance pan-européenne EuroExpress pour le Benelux. Elle remplace Van Gend & Loos, qui a dû quitter l'organisation suite au rachat de Nedlloyd ETD par Danzas/Deutsche Post. Ce partenariat porte sur les transports d'envois allant du paquet au groupage palettisé. Gand: grève ou compromis? Le port de Gand balançait hier entre grève et compromis. Le conciliateur social Eddy Schelstraete devait réunir syndicats et employeurs autour de la table des négociations à trois heures de l'après-midi pour tenter de trouver un moyen terme entre leurs positions très divergentes. A l'heure de mettre sous presse, on ignorait encore si un compromis serait trouvé. Si leurs revendications n'étaient pas satisfaites, les syndicats menaçaient de paralyser le port avec effet immédiat jusqu'à lundi matin.
