REEFER

INFORMATIVA: L'ASCESA DEL TRASPORTO MARITTIMO REFRIGERATO

Anche se i contenitori refrigerati presentano problematiche per i vettori ed i porti, richiedendo elevati costi di gestione e manutenzione regolare, il mercato per il trasporto marittimo reefer sta crescendo ad un rapido ritmo.

In un recente documento tecnico, disponibile su Port Technology, Søren Leth Johannsen della Maersk Container Industry ha spiegato che la riduzione dei costi energetici e l'ottimizzazione della qualità dei carichi, utilizzando una combinazione di tecnologie esistenti ed emergenti, rende questo settore prezioso per le aziende marittime.

Sebbene l'innovazione tecnologica abbia già avuto un significativo impatto sul trasporto marittimo reefer, vettori, terminal ed esperti convengono che ci sia più potenziale di sviluppo.

Ciò è stato sottolineato dalla decisione del caricatore di spicco Maersk di impegnarsi nella "filiera del freddo", avendo il proprio segmento Container Industry deciso di adottare l'Internet delle Cose quale strumento di trasformazione e miglioramento delle operazioni refrigerate.

Mentre c'è una sempre maggiore pressione sul settore dei contenitori per carichi secchi, come può il mercato dei contenitori refrigerati continuare a crescere di pari passo con l'evoluzione della tecnologia?

L'evoluzione dei reefer

Nella propria analisi globale sui reefer inerente al 2015, la Dynamar aveva evidenziato l'emersione di una tendenza primaria: al posto delle navi reefer convenzionali, i box refrigerati sarebbero presto diventati più diffusi.

Nel 2018, si è chiaramente verificato nel settore tale passaggio, tanto che importanti vettori marittimi come la CMA CGM e la ONE (Ocean Network Express) hanno investito in contenitori reefer avanzati per supportare le esigenze delle proprie filiere distributive a lungo raggio.

Il vantaggio dei container reefer è chiaro: poiché è stata sviluppata la tecnologia di una unità refrigerata incorporata, che può aggirare lo stoccaggio a freddo sino al proprio arrivo a destinazione, il singolo reefer è divenuto un'opzione più semplice per il processo di carico e scarico.

Martin Dixon, responsabile prodotti di ricerca alla Drewry, ha sottolineato che "un numero maggiore di investimenti va in sistemi ad atmosfera controllata" utilizzati dai reefer, che rallentano la maturazione della frutta e verdura nel corso del trasporto su lunghe distanze.

"Consentendo ai vettori che vanno per mare di competere più attivamente con il trasporto merci aereo", come sostiene Dixon, i contenitori refrigerati detengono una posizione di estremo valore nel mercato.

Lo stato delle cose

La Drewry ha previsto che i traffici reefer continueranno a crescere nel giro dei prossimi cinque anni ad una media annua del 3% circa, al di sotto della media del 3,5% degli ultimi dieci anni.

Questa statistica tuttavia, che suggerisce un rallentamento per il settore, potrebbe non raccontare tutta la verità.

Anche se il tasso di crescita medio del trasporto marittimo refrigerato potrebbe star rallentando, i "traffici reefer containerizzati" stanno accelerando ad un ritmo molto più rapido: secondo la Drewry, questa quota di mercato si è espansa dell'8% nel 2017 e continua a svilupparsi su base annua.

Per i terminal specializzati in operazioni containerizzate del freddo, come l'impianto dedicato ai reefer presso il Porto di Luka Capodistria in Slovenia, la crescita di quest'area di attività è stata rispecchiata da un incremento della competitività, essendo divenute le aspettative del mercato e dei clienti "più rigorose e più esigenti".

"Al fine di far fronte a ciò" come spiega il responsabile operativo Luka Kraljic;, "le nostre operazioni devono essere ben coordinate e monitorate, ma pur sempre flessibili": l'attenzione principale del terminal si concentra sulla "attenta pianificazione" e sulla cooperazione "fra coloro che partecipano alla filiera distributiva".

Problematiche del settore

La piazza di mercato per i reefer containerizzati può essere redditizia, ma ai terminal ed ai fornitori di soluzioni che lavorano nell'ambito dei questo settore viene ancora richiesto di ovviare ad una serie di problematiche operative e finanziarie.

Il Porto di Luka Capodistria deve affrontare la maggior parte delle difficoltà nel corso dell'alta stagione quanto, malgrado un significativo incremento dei volumi containerizzati, "i clienti si aspettano il miglior servizio con praticamente la stessa tempistica per la consegna delle merci".

Molti terminal reefer, come quello di Luka Capodistria, dispongono di risorse limitate e hanno bisogno di gestire scrupolosamente la disponibilità di stoccaggio "allo scopo di non pervenire ad un eccesso di prenotazioni", dato che la crescita stessa dei traffici reefer comporta problematiche aggiuntive per le aziende che hanno a che fare con i contenitori refrigerati.

Dalla prospettiva di Anders Holm, responsabile mondiale delle vendite e del marketing alla Maersk Container Industry, il trasporto marittimo refrigerato induce inoltre discussioni in ordine alle prestazioni ambientali: "Nelle operazioni quotidiane" sottolinea Holm "i nostri clienti hanno bisogno di raggiungere i loro obiettivi sostenibili effettuando nel contempo operazioni vantaggiose in termini di costi".

Poiché l'intera comunità marittima si sta preparando ai nuovi limiti allo zolfo posti dall'IMO (International Maritime Organization), che saranno introdotti a gennaio del 2020, il costo di alimentazione di una nave che trasporta molteplici unità reefer ha causato comprensibili preoccupazioni.

Un futuro più intelligente

Sebbene i contenitori reefer abbiano un ciclo vitale limitato e siano costosi da gestire quando sono in servizio, l'evoluzione di nuove tecnologie nell'ambito del settore potrebbe presentare notevoli vantaggi per i caricatori e pure per i terminal.

Secondo la Maersk, un software per il controllo della temperatura come lo "StarConomy" aiuterà i vettori ad assorbire il costo dell'aumento delle bollette energetiche, mentre il lancio del suo servizio di digitalizzazione dei reefer Sekstant è destinato a fornire agli operatori containerizzati un aumento della visibilità delle proprie flotte reefer.

L'aggiunta di trasparenza comporta un incremento dell'efficienza, dal momento che l'accesso in tempo reale ai dati sulla temperatura, l'atmosfera ed il consumo energetico del container può aiutare i caricatori ad organizzare in modo più efficiente le proprie spedizioni reefer.

"La domanda dei clienti" come asserisce la Maersk, ha indotto l'ascesa di queste nuove tecnologie e Martin Dixon della Drewry concorda sul fatto che le linee di navigazione containerizzate stiano cercando di "catturare questo mercato in crescita".

I traffici reefer containerizzati continueranno a crescere nei prossimi anni e, con l'aumento della domanda di linee di navigazione, fornitori di soluzioni e terminal specializzati, lo stesso avverrà per la necessità di nuove tecnologie ed operazioni più intelligenti al fine di occuparsene.
