La nuova straddle carrier automatizzata Patrick Corporation/Kalmar Industries

L'Australia non è rimasta immune dalla "sindrome cinese" comportata dal boom dei traffici provenienti da quel paese, che è andata di pari passo con una carenza di buona capacità di terminal containers per movimentarla. Nel corso dell'anno fiscale 2002/2003, i tre principali porti australiani di Brisbane, Melbourne e Sydney hanno movimentato complessivamente 3.275.776 TEU. Tale risultato è stato superiore del 12,9% ai 2.901.459 TEU movimentati l'anno precedente. Inoltre, l'aumento pre-natalizio delle importazioni nel 2003 è stato ancora maggiore di quello del 2002. Ad esempio, Sidney ha riferito di un aumento del 6,1% nel primo trimestre (1' luglio-30 settembre 2003) rispetto allo stesso periodo dell'anno fiscale 2001/2002, che ha raggiunto i 305.946 TEU.

Allo stesso tempo, la programmata introduzione, a partire dalla fine del 2002, di 10 navi da 4.100 TEU in un servizio settimanale "giramondo" effettuato dalla ANZ Alliance - i cui membri comprendono CMA CGM, Columbus Line, Contship, Hapag-Lloyd e P&O Nedlloyd - ha aggravato i già intensi problemi di congestione presso molti porti australiani.

Nel tentativo di far fronte a tali crescenti volumi ed al carico/scarico delle navi veloci, la Patrick Corporation e la Kalmar Industries nell'ottobre scorso hanno inaugurato le prime autostrads (straddle carriers automatizzate) a livello mondiale per la movimentazione di contenitori al Fisherman Islands Terminal di Brisbane. La Patrick è il maggiore operatore di terminal contenitori d'Australia, con importanti infrastrutture a Brisbane (due), Fremantle, Sydney, Port Botany e Melbourne (due). La Kalmar, con sede a Stoccolma, in Svezia, è un importante produttore globale di equipaggiamento per la movimentazione di contenitori, con una quota di mercato stimata del 60%. Le due società hanno unito i propri sforzi sette anni fa al fine di sviluppare ed implementare il primo terminal contenitori automatizzato del mondo allo scopo di migliorare l'efficienza e la produttività terminalistica.

Il terminal della Patrick, situato all'Ormeggio 7 delle Fisherman Islands, ha iniziato le operazioni commerciali a pieno regime a metà del 2002, con uno scalo settimanale. Le operazioni del piazzale terminalistico sono espletate da 5 straddle carriers automatizzate senza gruista Kalmar CSC. Le conoscenze e l'esperienza della Kalmar sono state impiegate per lo sviluppo dei controlli meccanici che muovono, frenano e sterzano la straddle carrier, facendo sì che le macchine raccolgano e piazzino i containers nella loro posizione corretta. Ciò è stato ottenuto mediante l'applicazione di diversi sistemi della Kalmar, quali l'APP (Auto Pick & Place) che assiste il robot nella raccolta e nel posizionamento automatico dei contenitori, e lo Smartpath, un sistema di verifica della posizione dei containers che fa sì che i containers mal collocati possano essere facilmente rintracciati e ritrovati. Quest'ultima applicazione riduce il tempo perduto nella collocazione ed identificazione dei containers.

Un altro sistema della Kalmar, lo Smartrail, è stato utilizzato per consentire a diverse autostrads di lavorare simultaneamente. Lo Smartrail, che impedisce le collisioni nel piazzale contenitori, è un programma piuttosto diffuso tra le società ferroviarie. Inoltre, è stato installato uno RMCS (sistema manutenzione gru a distanza) all'interno delle macchine, di modo che esse possano essere monitorate in tempo reale per identificare e diagnosticare i problemi immediatamente. L'equipaggiamento robotico fa affidamento su radar, navigazione inerziale e tecnologia GPS sviluppate dalla Patrick Technology per poter girare liberamente nel terminal, seguendo istruzioni pre-programmate per lavori o compiti da portare a termine nel piazzale.

Le autostrads operano in un piazzale containerizzate cinto da filo spinato con allarmi ed infrarosso, circondato da uno steccato alto 1,6 metri, noto come "l'area senza esseri umani". Le macchine vengono monitorate dalla sala di controllo del piazzale da tre membri del personale al massimo, con una persona sul piazzale, al di fuori dell'area recintata. Sono sorte gravi preoccupazioni in ordine alla sicurezza di queste autostrads senza equipaggio, dopo un incidente occorso durante i collaudi nell'ottobre 2003, quando una delle autostrads uscì dal proprio sentiero ed uscì dall'area recintata. L'incidente, dovuto ad un malfunzionamento del software, venne immediatamente rilevato dallo RMCS e la macchina venne prontamente spenta.

Le autostrads sono equipaggiate con respingenti anti-collisione e sistemi di rilevamento laser in grado di scoprire le intrusioni di qualsiasi oggetto, vivo od inanimato, nel raggio di una determinata distanza dalla autostrad, che possono immediatamente spegnere e fermare automaticamente la macchina. Le autostrads possono essere integrate con la maggior parte di tipi di software per la gestione del piazzale. A Brisbane, esse funzionano con il Navis.

I collaudi durati due anni che hanno preceduto l'inaugurazione ufficiale hanno dimostrato che l'innovazione potrebbe essere una soluzione per migliorare l'efficienza e realizzare tempi di lavorazione più rapidi presso infrastrutture piene di lavoro. Secondo il principale consulente della Patrick Technology, Howard Wren, i cinque vettori autostrads sono in grado di realizzare una media di 22 movimentazioni gru all'ora; ciò, rispetto alla media di 33 movimentazioni gru all'ora realizzate da 26 straddle carriers con gruista presso l'infrastruttura North Terminal della Patrick a Port Botany (Sydney). La media di Brisbane è in linea con il punto di riferimento stabilito dal governo australiano di 25 movimentazioni gru all'ora. E' significativo come si stimi che i costi del lavoro e del consumo di carburante si siano ridotti rispettivamente del 40% e del 30%, grazie all'impiego delle autostrads. Il terminal è anche in grado di operare 24 ore al giorno, invece delle 21,5 ore al giorno attualmente espletate dalla maggior parte degli altri terminal contenitori della Patrick.

Sono previsti ulteriori, notevoli risparmi. Ad esempio, la flotta può essere impiegata in altre parti del terminal, a seconda delle esigenze, agevolando con ciò la pianificazione del piazzale e l'efficace gestione delle risorse. A differenza delle straddles convenzionali con equipaggio umano, le autostrads preservano la superficie del terminal dal logorio e dall'usura, evitando la formazione di solchi, dal momento che la direzione presa dalle autostrads può essere cambiata automaticamente e frequentemente. Si stima che il costo dell'automatizzazione dei piazzali containers della Patrick a Sydney, Port Botany, e Brisbane possa essere recuperato nel giro di 18 mesi.

La Patrick ha ordinato 14 straddle carriers automatizzate ESC DRIVE a fini di utilizzazione presso gli ormeggi 7, 8 e 9 di Fisherman Islands, dove è in corso di sviluppo un terminal contenitori di 30 ettari alle spalle di questi ormeggi. Lo scopo è quello di poter disporre di un terminal completamente automatizzato entro i primi del 2005. Si stima che lo sviluppo dell'intero terminal contenitori a Fisherman Islands venga a costare approssimativamente 100 milioni di dollari australiani (72,4 milioni di dollari USA). La Patrick è altresì intenzionata ad effettuare operazioni con straddle carriers senza equipaggio presso i propri terminals di Sydney, Melbourne e Fremantle.

Commenta Wren: "Il progetto di automatizzazione di Fisherman Islands non sarebbe stato possibile senza il supporto e le conoscenze di uno dei principali utenti terminalistici della Patrick, la Cosco Containers Line, il cui servizio settimanale a giorno fisso CNAU (Shanghai, Huangpu, Hong Kong, Port Botany, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hong Kong e Shanghai) scala l'Ormeggio 7 di Fisherman Islands a Brisbane tutti i martedì".

Nel corso dei collaudi delle autostrads, le operazioni portuali a Port Botany sono state accelerate di modo che le navi potessero arrivare a Brisbane più presto di quanto programmato. Ciò ha consentito al piazzale containerizzato automatizzato di essere collaudato e testato senza mettere a repentaglio gli orari della Cosco.

Wren ha altresì rivelato che il nuovo sviluppo del North Terminal a Port Botany della Patrick, che è in attesa di approvazione da parte del governo, darebbe impulso alla capacità dell'attuale infrastruttura da 640.000 TEU ad 1,3 milioni di TEU/anno. Egli ha poi concluso che la proposta progettazione del nuovo terminal affronterebbe la questione della gestione del traffico, migliorerebbe l'efficienza e favorirebbe la potenziale futura automazione.

Chris Corrigan, direttore generale della Patrick, nonché grande sostenitore dei cambiamenti che migliorano l'efficienza sul lavoro e l'uso della tecnologia presso i porti australiani, ha sottolineato a Sydney in occasione di una conferenza stampa nell'ottobre del 2003 che la sua società non si aspettava che l'uso della autostrads comportasse qualsivoglia riduzione del personale presso i terminals della società. Tuttavia, egli ha riconosciuto che ci sarebbe stato qualche risparmio sui costi del lavoro mediante il naturale processo di pensionamento.

Il ruolo di Corrigan nel miglioramento della produttività sul fronte del porto australiano dal 1998 è stato decisivo, dal momento che sfidato le prassi lavorative dei portuali nei terminals gestiti dalla Patrick Corp. Dopo aver assunto l'incarico di guidare la MUA (Unione Marittima d'Australia), ha apportato qualche sgradevole ma produttivo cambiamento, imponendo regole rigorose che hanno migliorato le operazioni terminalistiche ed incrementato la produttività.

Secondo Iilkka Annala, vice presidente del settore straddle carriers della Kalmar, la società aveva cominciato a prendere in considerazione le straddle carriers automatizzate sin dai primi anni '90. Ci si è serviti dell'innovazione per sviluppare le straddle carriers industriali al fine di movimentare rotoli di acciaio nei Paesi Bassi, ma nel 1997 l'uso della completa automazione per i terminal containers sembrava possibile. Sostiene Annala: "Abbiamo dimostrato che funziona, che è efficiente e che incrementa la produttività. Crediamo fermamente che questa nuova tecnologia stimolerà grandi cambiamenti nell'ambiente operativo dei terminals contenitori".

Ma questa tecnologia è trasferibile ad altri terminals, specialmente in Asia, dove i volumi sono più elevati e le operazioni di gran lunga più intense di quelle in Australia? La risposta sembra essere "sì", dato che Annala ha spiegato che invece di limitarsi ad automatizzare un solo elemento dell'automazione, si potrebbe automatizzare una combinazione di attrezzature containerizzate da piazzale, quali le gru a cavaliere su binari, le navette e le straddle carriers, mediante l'utilizzazione di concetti e tecnologie simili, al fine di conseguire una produttività ottimale e la razionalità dei costi. La Patrick e la Kalmar ritengono che entro il 2004 possa essere in attività un terminal equipaggiato con straddle carriers completamente automatizzate.
