CMA CGM: l'appetito aumenta

Jacques Saadé, presidente della CMA CGM, non condivide l'apparentemente sconfinato ottimismo della maggior parte dei vettori marittimi, secondo i quali il 2005 sarà una ripetizione del 2004 per il settore della navigazione di linea. E, dal momento che egli rappresenta uno dei più perspicaci nonché abili operatori del settore, la sua opinione è degna di considerazione.

"Quest'annata non sarà buona come il 2004. Le tariffe cominceranno a calare nell'ultimo trimestre a causa di tutte le grandi navi che dovrebbero essere consegnate nel 2006. Ciò continuerà nel 2006 e nel 2007, mentre si spera che il mercato possa riprendersi nel 2008" ha dichiarato.

Per alcuni, la CMA CGM viene considerata in parte una causa di questo problema, dato che la linea di navigazione ha in programma la consegna di 140.516 TEU di capacità di bordo tra il 2005 ed il 2007. Ciò comprende un'ordinazione originaria di 8 navi da 8.200 TEU, quattro delle quali - è stato recentemente annunciato - stanno per essere ingigantite fino a 9.163 TEU prima della loro consegna. Queste navi saranno impiegate nel servizio FAL, che collega l'Asia - principalmente la Cina centro-meridionale - all'Europa.

E' stata in parte la persistente solidità nel 2004 del mercato cinese, che rappresenta il 40% delle attività della compagnia di navigazione, che ha messo in grado la CMA CGM di prevedere una buona prestazione per l'ultimo anno (i suoi dati definitivi non saranno disponibili per diversi mesi). Il vettore prevede una crescita del 32,3% delle entrate del 2004 sulla scorta dell'aumento del 29% dei TEU trasportati l'anno scorso (v. tabella).

Essa ha altresì incrementato la propria capacità in termini di navi del 28% circa nel 2004. Jacques Saadé prevede inoltre un miglioramento della capacità di trarre profitti.

Malgrado l'opinione prudente del suo presidente in ordine a dove stia andando a parare il mercato, la CMA CGM non ha perso l'appetito per quanto riguarda l'espansione, come dimostrano il suo registro di ordinazione navi pieno zeppo, i piani relativi a nuovi servizi e gli ambiziosi progetti di sviluppo terminalistici.

La compagnia di navigazione da sempre noleggia una percentuale del proprio tonnellaggio superiore alla media. Al 1' gennaio 2005, circa il 66% della capacità del vettore era noleggiata. Tuttavia, il bilancio si sta spostando verso la proprietà. Ad esempio, cinque anni fa, essa noleggiava il 70% circa della propria capacità.

Anche così, un'elevata percentuale delle nuove costruzioni che la CMA CGM impiegherà nei prossimi due anni sarà costituita da noleggi a lungo termine con armatori tedeschi, segnatamente la ER Schiffahrt e la Rickmers Reederei. Tuttavia, l'ordinazione per otto navi (4 da 8.200 TEU e 4 da 9.163 TEU) presso la sudcoreana Hyundai Shipyard è stata effettuata in concreto dalla CMA CGM. Agnes Leinen - vicepresidente del settore noleggio, acquisti e vendite navi - prevede che il 1' gennaio 2008, 72 delle previste 243 navi della flotta saranno di proprietà.

Il vettore continuerà a fare affidamento in modo sostenuto sul mercato del noleggio, non ultimo per il fatto che esso gli consente di essere flessibile e di reagire rapidamente alle mutevoli circostanze del mercato. "La nostra flotta di proprietà non supererà mai il 50%" afferma Jacques Saadè. Tuttavia, in un momento in cui le tariffe di noleggio sono al loro punto più alto di sempre e risulta sempre più difficile fissare le navi per brevi periodi (se non del tutto), ciò comporta un costo. "Le tariffe di trasporto sono ridicole perché gli armatori la considerano un'opportunità che non avranno mai più" sostiene, spiegando che la sua società sta acquistando sempre più navi di seconda mano fino a 1.500 TEU. "Ci rifaremo del denaro speso per loro in otto anni".

Precisa la Leinen: "Nel corso degli ultimi due mesi (novembre e dicembre 2004), abbiamo acquistato cinque navi di seconda mano tra 800 e 1.500 TEU per l'utilizzazione nei nostri servizi di raccordo. Non desideriamo fissare le navi per il mercato dei raccordo per periodi di tre o cinque anni. Abbiamo bisogno di essere flessibili, in modo da poter migliorare i servizi ogni sei mesi di pari passo con la crescita e lo sviluppo delle nostre attività. E noi non desideriamo essere bloccati da navi che non vogliamo, anche se questo volesse dire pagare un prezzo più alto".

Coloro che hanno familiarità con la CMA CGM sapranno che uno dei segreti del suo successo è consistito in questa strategia di prudente espansione. Il modello consueto per la linea di navigazione è quello di fare il proprio ingresso in un mercato per mezzo del noleggio di spazio sulle navi di un fornitore di servizio già presente e poi costruirsi gradualmente una quota di mercato fino a quando non vi siano volumi sufficienti a giustificare l'impiego di navi proprie.

La CMA CGM sembra essere stata abile quanto chiunque altro nel settore del noleggio. Raja Sarkis, vice presidente esecutivo per il settore progetti ed acquisizioni/relazioni con le banche, fa notare: "Fortunatamente per noi, ci siamo dati da fare ed abbiamo colto al volo le navi per due o tre anni nelle prime fasi dell'attuale boom, quando il mercato era relativamente in equilibrio. Alcune le abbiamo prese addirittura per 10 anni. Qui, siamo stati fortunati ad avere il signor Jacques Saadé che ha deciso sulla base di solide ed affidabili informazioni' Di conseguenza, le nostre navi sono disponibili per almeno i prossimi 15 mesi a tariffe che sono al di sotto del mercato attuale. Ciò significa che nel corso dei mesi a venire, abbiamo meno del 10% della nostra flotta noleggiata da rinnovare".

Nel 2004, è stato dato il via ad una serie di nuovi servizi. Alcuni di loro riguardavano la tratta Asia-USA, compreso il settimanale Pearl River Express, che collega la Cina meridionale e la Corea del Sud ad Oakland e Long Beach su base settimanale utilizzando navi da 8.200 TEU. L'inaugurazione di questo servizio ad agosto del 2004 ha sofferto all'inizio per l'intasamento nella California meridionale. Tuttavia, il noleggio di spazi presso altri vettori consente alla linea di navigazione di offrire due servizi - il CPN ed il Tacoma Bridge - alla volta del Pacifico nord-occidentale.

La CMA CGM adesso dispone di cinque servizi da e per la Costa Occidentale del Nord America ed altri due al servizio della Costa Orientale. Uno di questi ultimi - il PEX2 - è uno dei pochi a fornire un servizio diretto tutto-mare dal Golfo del Messico (Houston) all'Asia. "Il servizio funziona da 18 mesi circa e rappresenta una risposta ad una domanda sostenuta, tanto che stiamo progettando di impiegarvi navi più grandi nel 2005. Le nostre attuali navi sono di dimensioni tra i 3.000 ed i 4.000 TEU" ha dichiarato John van de Merwe, vicepresidente anziano delle linee del Nordamerica e direttore generale della CMA CGM (America) Inc.

Poiché, come afferma van de Merwe, "i clienti desiderano la prevedibilità dei tempi di viaggio e non vogliono subire interruzioni della loro catena della fornitura just-in-time", la CMA CGM sta ipotizzando di lanciare quest'anno un servizio Cina meridionale/Sud-Est asiatico/Costa Orientale USA via Canale di Suez. Apparentemente, tale servizio sarebbe competitivo in termini di tempi di viaggio, con un instradamento tutto-mare via Canale di Panama per i carichi con origine nella Cina meridionale e nel Sud-Est asiatico. "Molto dipenderà dalla nostra capacità di trovare tonnellaggio disponibile" spiega van de Merwe.

Lo scorso anno è avvenuta un'espansione anche nei traffici tra Europa ed Asia. Ciò ha comportato un incremento delle dimensioni del North China Express e l'introduzione di un secondo allacciamento Bosphorus Express, il BEX2. Di conseguenza, la CMA CGM ora offre complessivamente 14 servizi Asia-Europa, tra cui sei nei quali non impiega tonnellaggio proprio. Secondo Nicholas Sartini, vicepresidente anziano delle linee Asia/Europa, la compagnia ora dispone di 20.000 TEU di capacità settimanale in questo mercato, due terzi circa dei quali sono dedicati al servizio della Cina.

Dichiara Sartini: "Ciò che abbiamo tentato di fare negli ultimi quattro anni è introdurre ulteriore capacità (dal 10 al 25 per cento) ogni anno, dal momento che vorremmo crescere più rapidamente di quanto non faccia il mercato". Nel 2005, Sartini prevede una crescita della capacità della CMA CGM pari al 12,5% circa sino a raggiungere 22.500 TEU/settimana per la metà dell'anno, principalmente in conseguenza dell'aver rilevato un numero maggiore di spazi sui servizi esistenti.

Come già indicato, la significativa espansione in questo settore giungerà nel 2006, quando il vettore comincerà ad impiegare le sue navi da 8.200 TEU e 9.163 TEU nel servizio FAL. Ciò consentirà alla CMA CGM di estromettere le navi da 6.500 TEU dal servizio FAL per dirottarle su un altro servizio Asia/Europa - il NCX - le cui navi da 5.700 TEU saranno, a loro volta, reimpiegate nel Mediterraneo per l'utilizzazione nel suo servizio MEX. Di conseguenza, nel 2006, la capacità settimanale aggiuntiva sarà di 27.000 TEU, mentre salirà fino a 29.000 TEU nel 2009. Precisa Sartini: "Non prevediamo di dare il via a nessun nuovo servizio nel 2006, ma la crescita deriverà dall'aumento delle dimensioni delle nostre navi".

Anche il mercato interasiatico è stato identificato come una zona di futura espansione, secondo Farid Salem, primo dirigente e vice presidente del gruppo. La CMA CGM ha fatto il proprio ingresso nel mercato lo scorso anno, associandosi con la Cheng Lie Navigation e la Yang Ming, con un servizio che collega la Cina centro-settentrionale con il Sud-Est asiatico, utilizzando navi dalla capacità media di 1.500 TEU. L'intenzione è quella di lavorare con partners che sviluppino altre rotte, tra cui l'Australia/Sud-Est asiatico, dove la consociata ANL opera già da tempo. Inoltre, partono navette dal Sud-est asiatico e dalla costa orientale indiana alla volta del Bangladesh, con partners locali.

Quest'anno avverrà altresì un'espansione in Sudamerica, dove la CMA CGM ha ancora una presenza relativamente modesta. Rodolphe Saadé, vice presidente esecutivo in capo, che è recentemente tornato da un viaggio in Sudamerica, ha spiegato che il vettore ravvisa "buone opportunità di crescita in quei luoghi". Dichiara, infatti: "Pensiamo che la nostra quota di mercato sia troppo piccola".

I cambiamenti si concentreranno inizialmente sui servizi della linea di navigazione dalla costa orientale del Sudamerica verso, rispettivamente, l'Asia e la costa orientale USA. Tutti e due restano affidati alla CSAV ed il termine di scadenza dell'accordo tra le linee francese e cilena a maggio di quest'anno fornirà alla CMA CGM, come spiega Rodolphe Saadé, l'opportunità di espandersi in entrambi i mercati sopra citati, tanto che si sta guardando attorno alla ricerca di nuovi partners. L'intenzione è quella di effettuare un investimento maggiore e di incrementare la capacità della CMA CGM.

Nel caso dell'Asia, il servizio settimanale - noto come ASAX - collega l'Asia con l'ECSA via Sudafrica. La CMA CGM ha dato inizio al collegamento quattro anni fa, inizialmente mediante il noleggio di spazi-containers, ed ora mediante l'impiego di due navi da 2.000 TEU. Jean-François Guittet, vice presidente anziano per le linee relative ad Africa, Oceania ed Oceano Indiano, ha dichiarato che c'era programmi finalizzati a dare il via ad un nuovo servizio che copra una rotta simile con partners "che debbono ancora essere individuati".

Piani dello stesso tipo sono in procinto di essere elaborati per i traffici costa orientale USA/costa orientale Sudamerica. Rodolphe Saadé ha spiegato che i servizi del vettore su quella tratta, in cui essa dispone di due programmazioni (una delle quali è solamente un accordo per il noleggio di spazi), resteranno immutati. Il suo partner principale in questo mercato è la Hamburg Sud.

Commentando in genere le difficoltà dell'espansione dei traffici nord/sud, Guittet fa notare: "I porti sono un problema, ma ugualmente lo è la ricerca delle navi giuste. E' difficile ottenere le navi giuste ad un prezzo conveniente".

I programmi di espansione della CMA CGM non si limitano ai servizi di linea, dato che sta realizzando un portafoglio di interessi nei terminals e ha ancora ambizioni logistiche in ambito portuale. "E' nostra intenzione quella di diventare partner sia di una grossa impresa logistica, sia di una grande società globale operatrice di terminal contenitori", rivela Jacques Saadè, spiegando che ciò comporterebbe l'acquisizione di una partecipazione di minoranza in tali società.

"Abbiamo bisogno di farlo perché, a nostro giudizio, è troppo tardi per poterci creare da noi stessi una simile attività. Per noi ci vorrebbero almeno dai tre ai quattro anni prima di riuscire a costituire una società terminalistica nostra e ciò comporterebbe un massiccio investimento. Abbiamo bisogno di poter disporre di capacità logistica se vogliamo competere per i contratti del tipo porta a porta in tutto il mondo" ha aggiunto. La società apparentemente era uno dei soci di minoranza in uno dei gruppi che recentemente ha concorso senza successo nella gara d'appalto della CSX Terminals.

Secondo Salem, la strategia terminalistica della CMA CGM è guidata dalla necessità di assicurare gli ormeggi alle proprie navi a costi stabili e di completare la propria catena di servizi intermodali da porta a porta. In alcuni casi - come Malta, dove lo scorso anno si è assicurata una concessione trentennale relativa alle operazioni dei Malta Freeport Terminals - si ravvisa altresì un'importanza strategica per la società. "Ma, naturalmente, non siamo interessati ad alcun investimento a meno che esso non garantisca un buon ritorno" ha dichiarato spontaneamente Salem.

Oltre a Malta, la CMA CGM ha interessi terminalistici a Fos, Marsiglia, Le Havre, in Martinica, Guadalupa e nella Guyana francese. La società si dichiara "delusa" per non essersi assicurata la concessione inerente alle operazioni del Dock Sud Alberto II a Zeebrugge, dove l'ha persa a vantaggio della APM Terminals. Questo porto belga è un importante centro di collegamento per la linea di navigazione e Salem ha rivelato che la CMA CGM è in trattative con la PSA/Hesse-Noord Natie per l'acquisizione di una quota del 35% nel Terminal OCHZ.

In India, la CMA CGM fa parte di un gruppo che partecipa alla gara d'appalto sia per un terminal contenitori sia per una infrastruttura LNG presso il porto di Hazira, che è situato a mezza strada tra Mumbai e Mundra. Hazira in origine era stata realizzata per movimentare LNG, ma adesso è in costruzione un terminal contenitori che dovrebbe essere pronto entro due anni. "Sarà il principale porto per le esportazioni dall'India settentrionale" ha detto Salem.

Non sorprende il fatto che la CMA CGM sia desiderosa di assicurarsi interessi nei terminals in Cina. Salem ha snocciolato una lista di possibili candidati tra cui Chiwan, Mawan, Nansha, Ningbo, Dalian e Xingang: "Le trattative sono in corso ed entro quest'anno qualcosa potrebbe materializzarsi presso uno di loro".

Sul lungo termine, dal momento che le attività della CMA CGM in Sudamerica (specialmente il Brasile) sono in fase di sviluppo, esiste la possibilità - ammette Salem - che venga rilevata una partecipazione in terminals sulla Costa Orientale.

Come gli altri importanti fornitori di servizi containerizzati a conduzione familiare che oggi dominano la parte superiore della classifica delle prime 20 linee di navigazione containerizzate, la CMA CGM non mostra alcun segnale nel senso di una limitazione dei propri programmi di espansione, anzi. Il desiderio di crescita sembra forte come non mai e, a questo punto, il solo fattore che potrebbe agire da deterrente sembrerebbe consistere nella carenza di navi disponibili. Peraltro, appare improbabile che Jacques Saadé lasci che le cose vadano in questo modo.
