Lo IICL (Istituto dei Noleggiatori Internazionali di Containers) ha pubblicato la propria "X Indagine Annuale IICL sulla flotta containerizzata in noleggio"

"All'inizio del 1998" ha dichiarato Edward A. Woolley, segretario dell'IICL "la flotta noleggiata operativa dei noleggiatori di contenitori a livello mondiale ammontava a circa 5,2 milioni di TEU". Apportate le correzioni inerenti al 1998 rispetto alla flotta del 1997, i dati relativi al 1998, corrispondenti a 5.211.189 TEU, rappresentano un incremento approssimativo di 495.914 TEU rispetto ai 4.715.275 TEU ricalcolati al gennaio 1997.

I principali operatori del settore detenevano, sempre al 1° gennaio di quest'anno, 4.811.189 TEU dei contenitori internazionali; si stima che le altre imprese di noleggio disponessero - alla stessa data - di 400.000 TEU. Il tutto, corrisponde ad un totale di 5.211.189 TEU all'inizio dell'anno rispetto all'intero settore del noleggio.

I principali operatori hanno acquistato nel 1997 695.232 TEU, la maggior parte dei quali direttamente dai produttori; meno di 50.000 TEU, invece, provenivano da altre fonti. Le cessioni effettuate dai principali operatori nel 1997 si sono attestate a 284.318 TEU.

Una parte notevole dei 695.232 TEU complessivamente acquistati e dell'aumento di 495.914 TEU dal gennaio 1997 al gennaio 1998 è costituita da sostituzioni delle cessioni suddette e dall'aggregazione alla flotta degli acquisti effettuati da due nuovi operatori. Anche quest'ultimo incremento è stato assoggettato alle modifiche rispetto al 1997 e ad una correzione in eccesso della stima relativa alle altre imprese di noleggio (400.000 TEU al 1° gennaio 1998 rispetto ai 315.000 TEU al 1° gennaio 1997).

Malgrado la difficile situazione del settore, il tasso di utilizzazione si è gradualmente ripreso nell'ambito delle flotte dei principali operatori: l'84,93% del 1° gennaio 1998 rispetto all'81,55% del 1° gennaio 1997, all'85,37% del 1° gennaio 1996 ed all'86,95% del 1° gennaio 1995.

Quanto alle dimensioni delle attrezzature, la tendenza verso i 40 piedi verificatasi qualche anno fa è ripresa ma in misura moderata. La percentuale in TEU delle unità da 40 piedi dei principali operatori al 1° gennaio di quest'anno era attestata al 63,42%, rispetto al 62,30% del 1997, al 62,23% del 1996 ed al 61,83% del 1995. Anche se non si è ripetuto l'aumento del 6% in tre anni (dal 54,95% del gennaio 1991 al 61,23% del 1994), l'aumento dell'1,12% nel 1994 è notevole per un solo anno.

Nella Tabella 1, vengono riportati i dati complessivi inerenti agli equipaggiamenti dei principali operatori al gennaio 1998.

Le cifre relative ai più volte citati principali operatori del settore si riferiscono ai membri dell'IICL, vale a dire CAI, Carlisle, Cronos, Flexi-Van, Florens, Interpool, Sea Containers, Textainer, Transamerica, Triton, XTRA International ed inoltre alla Genstar ed ai due nuovi operatori in questo settore, cioè la Capitale e la Gateway.
