    THREE of Japan's leading shipbuilders are planning an alliance which could pave the way for the formation of the nation's largest shipyard group.

    A fire broke out aboard a Holland America Line cruise ship carrying nearly 1,700 passengers and crew as it steamed through the dramatic Glacier Bay National Park. No one was seriously injured. The fire aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam was extinguished within 45 minutes of being discovered, the US Coast Guard said. The blaze was confined to the rear section of the Carnival-owned ship, in the crew quarters and below the main passenger deck. One person sustained minor injuries that were attributed to the fire. "A passenger was disoriented, fell and hit his head," said Coast Guard petty officer Mitchell Fletcher. No damage estimate has yet been made, Holland America said. The ship should be fully repaired and back in service by June 1. The ship was carrying 1,169 passengers and 542 crew members. No pollution was reported as a result of the fire.
