Smit Internationale prend une participation de 49% dans URS Le sort en est jeté. Après des mois de négociations, les représentants d'URS (Unie van Reddings- en Sleepdienst) et Smit Internationale se sont mis d'accord sur le contenu à donner à l'alliance prévue entre les deux entreprises. Ainsi, le groupe néerlandais de remorquage et de sauvetage portera de 26 à 49% sa participation dans URS, tandis que les activités dans la zone de l'Escaut occidental seront regroupées sous le dénominateur URS. Brointermed Lines effectue son retour au port d'Anvers L'armement Brointermed Lines Ltd, de Harwich, revient en direct à Anvers avec son service sur la Libye, assuré à une fréquence d'un départ tous les 14 jours. L'armement avait mis un terme à cette desserte il y a un peu plus de 6 mois. C'est grâce à l'intervention de l'agent maritime Durot Shipping, qui représente désormais ce service dans le port scaldien, que ce revirement est intervenu. Ce dernier a pu convaincre l'agent général pour l'Europe, Hugo Trimpy (Gênes), de la nécessité de refaire une escale directe à Anvers compte tenu du potentiel de fret susceptible d'y être attiré. Bayonne veut des lignes avec les ports du Nord Situé à l'embouchure du fleuve Adour, le port français de Bayonne, dans les Pyrénées-Atlantiques, a traité 1,750 million de tonnes de marchandises au cours des cinq premiers mois de l'exercice 2000. Grâce à 312 millions de FRF (47,6 mio. d'EUR) d'investissements, il va renforcer ses capacités. L'un des objectifs du développement prévu est l'ouverture de lignes avec les grands ports de l'Europe du Nord.
