L’UE envisage une aide de 21% aux chantiers navals correspondante à la sous-cote coréenne Les chantier sud-coréens ont raflé 65% des commandes l’année dernière, ceci pour une valeur de 15,2 milliards de dollars US, ce qui s’est traduit par une hausse de 38% en nombre de navires pour atteindre 313 unités. La Corée du Sud s’est placée largement en tête du marché mondial pour la deuxième année consécutive. Pendant ces 12 mois les chantiers sud-coréens ont construit 180 navires, soit 6,5 mio. de tonnes brutes compensées et une valeur de 9,6 mia. de dollars. Au 31 décembre 2000, les carnets de commandes de ces chantiers portaient sur 503 navires pour une valeur de 23,1 mia. de dollars, soit du travail à plein régime pour deux ans et demi. Face à cette évolution, l’UE, après maintes discussions avec les autorités sud-coréennes envisage de réagir et pourrait dans certains cas porter son aide jusqu’à 21% de la valeur des contrats, ce qui correspondrait à la sous-cote coréenne.

L’armement dispose déjà de ses propres bureaux en Méditerranée (où il a développé son service sur le Golfe US) ainsi qu’en Asie du Nord et du Sud et des agents ont été nommés récemment en Asie du Sud-Est, suite à l’extension des services transpacifiques. Toutes les dispositions étaient donc en place pour lancer un tel service. Pour Lykes Lines, il s ‘agit du premier service qui n’implique pas une desserte des USA.
