D’ici 2006, il réalisera des investissements pour un montant de 4,8 milliards de FRF (730 millions d’EUR). La majeure partie de cette somme, soit 3,7 mia. de FRF, sera consacrée à la réalisation du projet de nouveaux terminaux à containers “Port 2000”. Le port français, qui a vu son trafic global progresser de 5,6% à 68 millions de tonnes l’année dernière, a enregistré une bonne performance dans le domaine des diverses. Ce trafic s’est élevé à 17,13 mio. de t et a progressé de 5,8%; les containers sont intervenus avec 13,78 mio. de t (+7,5%), pour 1,46 mio. de TEU (+6,3%). L’accent est désormais mis sur le développement de la containérisation. Le ministre des Transports Jean-Claude Gayssot vient d’ailleurs de donner un sérieux coup de pouce à ce projet “Port 2000”.
La CE lance le débat sur l’ouverture du marché des services portuaires A maintes reprises, nous avons fait allusion dans ces colonnes aux propositions de directive que la Commission européenne a élaborées sur les ports et les services qui s’y rapportent. Le volumineux document, qui avait déjà fait l’objet de fuites, vient d’être rendu public. Il contient notamment la proposition ayant trait au libre accès au marché de ces services portuaires. La philosophie à la base de cette ébauche de politique portuaire est d’éliminer les restrictions, d’améliorer les services et de les rendre plus compétitifs, donc moins chers, grâce à la concurrence. La réduction des coûts doit permettre de rendre le cabotage et le transport combiné plus attractifs.

Relance du trafic portuaire à Ostende Après le recul constant des dernières années, le trafic maritime du port d’Ostende s’est redressé l’année dernière. Le trafic roro sur l’Angleterre a réalisé une forte progression, de sorte que le bilan global s’est établi à 4.326.453 tonnes ou 39,1% de mieux qu’en 1999. Seul le trafic touristique a continué à régresser mais la mise en service des Superseacats de l’armement Hoverspeed pourrait y remédier.
