    The unfolding events of the hijacking of the US-flagged container vessel the Maersk Alabama this week and the subsequent hostage taking of its master has propelled the Somali piracy problem back into the mainstream news. One can only imagine the angst that the boxship's crew experienced as they suffered a sustained five-hour-long assault by pirates armed with AK-47 assault rifles; and not least the distress felt by the brave captain's family back in his home town, sitting and waiting for news of his safety.
