Overseas bidders make WA shortlist Singapore's Jurong Town Corporation and James Point Pty Ltd, a consortium headed up by Western Stevedores are proposing to team up to build, own and operate the proposed $60 million strike-free port at Kwinana. WA Transport Minister Eric Charlton's policy adviser Greg Trenberth said within the next month these companies would be sent documentation inviting them to prepare tenders. It was hoped that construction would begin by the end of the year, with the port scheduled to be fully operational by 2001. Lay offs loom if waterfront dispute drags on Up to a quarter of small to medium sized business will have to consider laying off workers if the dispute between Patrick and the Maritime Union of Australia continues for another three weeks.
