Le tariffe da Newcastle per Napoli

I servizi intermodali dalla Gran Bretagna per il Sud Italia possono essere molto competitivi rispetto a quelli più tradizionali su strada per quanto concerne i costi di trasporto e i tempi di transito. I servizi di cabotaggio per un porto italiano, poi, o l'instradamento delle merci da Rotterdam a Zeebrugge su ferrovia possono essere anche molto più convenienti.

Trasportare due containers, o due swapbodies, dal Nord dell'Inghilterra al Sud Italia a mezzo di servizi intermodali a base ferroviaria attraverso il Canale della Manica risulta di fatto meno caro che effettuare lo stesso tipo di trasporto su gomma. Non solo i costi di movimentazione delle merci sono significativamente inferiori, ma tre quotazioni di servizi intermodali esaminate hanno mostrato che anche i tempi di transito sono più ridotti, solo quattro o cinque giorni, su un tragitto che solamente uno, tra i tanti vettori su gomma, ha dichiarato di riuscire a fare.

Utilizzare un servizio di cabotaggio per containers da un porto della costa orientale della Gran Bretagna in direzione Rotterdam o Zeebrugge, incluse le infrastrutture per il carico su ferrovia verso destinazioni italiane, è anche più efficiente in termini di costo, come anche l'uso di servizi di cabotaggio per un porto italiano come Salerno. In più, i tempi di transito door-to-door per servizi di questo tipo possono essere più lenti solo marginalmente rispetto ai servizi intermodali, sebbene il cabotaggio nel Mediterraneo abbia una cadenza appena settimanale, mentre le partenze di trasporti a carattere intermodale avvengono ogni giorno.

Containerisation International, nell'intento di esaminare le tariffe dei diversi spedizionieri marittimi e operatori intermodali attraverso il Canale della Manica e valutarne la convenienza, ha effettuato una ricerca presso le maggiori compagnie sui prezzi da loro applicati, naturalmente per la rotta Gran Bretagna-Rotterdam-Zeebrugge compresi i servizi di cabotaggio intramediterranei. È stato anche chiesto, con scarso successo in verità, ai diretti interessati di produrre delle quotazioni.

La consegna da effettuare era di due containers da 20ft, ovvero due swapbodies, riempiti con materiale per il desktop publishing, con l'alternativa di trasportare la consegna via autocarri. Agli operatori contattati è stato richiesto di quotare i prezzi door-to-door della spedizione, dalla raccolta nel centro città di Newcastle-upon-Tyne, nel Nord Est dell'Inghilterra, fino alla consegna effettiva nel cuore di Napoli, nel Sud Italia. Gli operatori dovevano indicare precisamente i costi di tutte le varie fasi del processo, dal trasporto e carico nel porto inglese, alla movimentazione lungo tutto il percorso, fino all'arrivo nel porto italiano.

Alcuni degli operatori interpellati hanno fornito senza problemi tutte queste informazioni, mentre altri si sono limitati ad indicare le tariffe complessive di tutto il servizio door-to-door. Non tutti hanno indicato i tempi di transito, anche se richiesto. I risultati sono esposti nella tabella che segue.

Osservando la tabella, non ci si deve sorprendere se le quotazioni ricevute per i servizi intermodali attraverso il Tunnel della Manica sono molto convenienti in relazione a costi e tempi di transito, dato che tutti gli operatori intermodali da e per il Regno Unito ritengono che i loro servizi siano in generale migliori nel generare volumi di carico rispetto a quelli prodotti da e per altri Paesi dell'Europa Continentale.

Infatti, la tariffa più bassa della Contship Overland, per due containers di 45ft, £2,590 (US$2,755), è del 49% inferiore del maggiore costo per un servizio di tipo trailer (£3,850, pari a US$5,582) quotato dalla Eurobox Line Agencies, e del 29% inferiore alla tariffa trailer più piccola (£3,345, US$4,850) quotata dalla Karitrans. In più, i costi quotati da altri intermodal operators via Tunnel erano approssimativamente nello stesso range di prezzo.

È rilevante il fatto che la Contship Overland, che fa quotazioni per spedizioni in containers da 45ft, o tilt/tautliners da 13,6 metri, e la Tarros (UK) abbiano riconosciuto che un movimento intermodale door-to-door dovrebbe impiegare solamente quattro o cinque giorni, mentre è solo uno l'operatore, la Karitrans, che impiega effettivamente dai quattro ai cinque giorni per il transito delle merci. Due operatori sui trailers, Andante Freight e Eurobox Line Agencies, contemplano invece tempi di transito non inferiori ai sette giorni, con costi ancora superiori a quelli del trasporto intermodale o in modalità short-sea.

La quotazione più bassa è stata quella della Gracechurch Container Lin me approssimativo di soli sette giorni, sembra essere un'opzione alternativa altamente attraente.

I servizi intermodali su base ferroviaria attraverso il Tunnel della Manica, assieme allo short-sea da Rotterdam per Zeebrugge, e poi il trasporto su binari per l'Italia, e lo short-sea direttamente nel Mediterraneo, sono emersi quale valida modalità di trasporto. Allo stesso tempo, bisogna rilevare che gli spedizionieri e i trasportatori generalmente rimangono diffidenti rispetto all'affidabilità della linea ferroviaria sotto la Manica.

Al di là di tutto, però, non si possono trarre ancora delle conclusioni definitive data la scarsità delle risposte date dagli interessati. Solo il tempo e l'evoluzione del mercato potranno dire quale modalità prevarrà, e quale variabile tra tempi e costi.
