Le ferrovie nordamericane realizzano ancora profitti

I volumi in espansione hanno indotto una sostenuta crescita dei traffici intermodali per le ferrovie nordamericane nel primo trimestre del 2005 (v. tabella). Tuttavia, i problemi inerenti al servizio impediscono tuttora alla CSX ed alla UP (Union Pacific) di far registrare la medesima crescita realizzata dalle altre ferrovie nordamericane di prima categoria.

Le entrate ferroviarie della CSX hanno rappresentato l'84,4% delle sue entrate complessive relative alla divisione trasporti di superficie e, in effetti, delle entrate complessive della CSX Corporation a seguito della sua dismissione della divisione CSX World Terminals. Questa cessione ha assicurato un guadagno al netto delle imposte pari a 425 milioni di dollari USA. I volumi intermodali sono diminuiti nel loro complesso, spinti verso il basso dal calo dei volumi nazionali a causa della sua iniziativa finalizzata a semplificare la propria rete; i prezzi più alti, peraltro, hanno comportato un aumento delle entrate.

La UP ha dovuto altresì subire le conseguenze della tempesta sulla Costa Occidentale statunitense all'inizio del 2005, che si stima sia costata alla ferrovia 34 milioni di dollari. La UP ha registrato un calo del 4% nella velocità media dei suoi treni rispetto al primo trimestre del 2004, sebbene in ogni caso si sia trattato di un miglioramento rispetto al quarto trimestre del 2004.

Tuttavia, una ricerca della Morgan Stanley conclude al riguardo: "Abbiamo la sempre più ferma convinzione che le operazioni della UP stiano cominciando a superare la fase critica' le nostre recenti conversazioni con i clienti della UP suggeriscono come i tempi di transito e l'affidabilità abbiano mostrato un miglioramento rispetto alle ultime sei settimane". I prezzi dell'intermodale stanno migliorando, dato l'incremento anno per anno del 14% in ordine alle rese sui carichi intermodali.
