In 2021, the number of shipments handled by combined transport services in Europe grew by 8.1% percent having been made 5.1 million deliveries compared to 4.7 million in the previous year. In addition, last year the productivity of European combined transport increased by 10.9% percent by being equal to 100.2 billion tonnes-kilometers compared to 90.3 billion t / km in 2020. The International Union for Road-Rail Combined Transport (UIRR) said in 2021 the combined road-rail transport sector had consolidated its position in rail freight, with a share of the intermodal trains that have exceeded 50% of the total European rail transport of goods.

In addition, the UIRR said that in 2021 the average distance travelled by rail from combined transport services in Europe remained unchanged from the previous year as it was 895 kilometres, while the weight of the goods carried by them services recorded an increase of 9.8% percent since it amounted to 111.9 billion tonnes. In terms of 20-foot containers, the volumes of loads transported last year by these services amounted to 10.2 million teu (+ 8.1%).
