Hong Kong è stato ancora il più grande porto containerizzato del mondo nel 2003, avendo movimentato 20,1 milioni di TEU stimati. Tutto ciò, malgrado il suo ruolo di porta d'accesso primaria per le esportazioni dalla Cina meridionale sia stato sottoposto ad un duro attacco dai tre terminals che costituiscono Shenzen (Chiwan, Shekou e Yantian). Hong Kong potrà avere i suoi problemi, ma per alcuni caricatori presenta ancora certi vantaggi rispetto ai suoi più immediati rivali.

Singapore è stato ancora una volta secondo in classifica, avendo movimentato 18,1 milioni di TEU, con una crescita del 7,7% rispetto al 2002. Sebbene questo incremento percentuale sia stato inferiore a quello del suo concorrente più vicino - il porto di Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), nella Malaysia meridionale, laddove i volumi sono saliti di un florido 31,1% - Singapore continua ad essere il porto principale del sud-est asiatico. La PSA Corp è intenzionata a continuare su questa via e ha manifestato il proprio desiderio di fare concorrenza ai prezzi offerti dai suoi rivali in Malesia. Inoltre, con un'inversione della propria politica, essa ha consentito ad un vettore marittimo, la Cosco, di rilevare una quota di partecipazione a due ormeggi del terminal Pasir Panjang. La PSA ha svelato di avere predisposto piani finalizzati alla costruzione di cinque nuovi ormeggi a Pasir Panjang, che daranno impulso alla capacità annua del porto sino a 24 milioni di TEU.

Tuttavia, sono i porti cinesi a dominare sempre più la classifica, dal momento che le esportazioni del paese fluiscono in containers alla volta del resto del mondo. Adesso, nella classifica dei primi 30 porti mondiali, ce ne sono sette (Shanghai, Shenzen, Qingdao, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Ningbo e Xiamen).

E' significativo notare come tutti loro abbiano fatto registrare massicci incrementi nel 2003 in termini sia di crescita percentuale sia di TEU effettivamente movimentati. Ad esempio, Shenzen ha aggiunto quasi 3 milioni di TEU, mentre Shanghai ha fatto segnare altri 2,7 milioni di TEU in più. Entrambi i porti sembrano destinati ad occupare entro pochi anni i primi due posti in classifica, specialmente quando l'enorme porto ad acque profonde di Shanghai al momento in costruzione entrerà in servizio. La prima fase dovrebbe essere completata entro il 2005.

La crescita di Shanghai e Shenzen ha spinto il porto sud-coreano di Busan giù fino al quinto posto. Tuttavia, il fatto che i suoi volumi in TEU siano aumentati del 9,7% lo scorso anno rappresenta una grosso risultato, dati i problemi che Busan ha dovuto affrontare nel 2003. Tra questi vi sono stati gli scioperi degli autotrasportatori e la distruzione di 11 delle sue 52 gru per containers ad opera di un tifone. Nello sforzo di trattenere il traffico di trasbordo - che ancora rappresenta il 40% circa della sua attività - Busan ha pressochè dimezzato gli oneri di movimentazione per i carichi di trasbordo.

Come mostra la tabella, i porti cinesi non sono stati le uniche infrastrutture asiatiche a conseguire una crescita a doppia cifra nel 2003. Il PTP ha riportato uno dei più alti tassi di crescita tra i primi 30 in classifica, il che riflette la sua aggressiva strategia di crescita e gli sforzi per cercare di conquistare imprese alla propria zona franca. Anche il tailandese Laem Chabang si è comportato bene.

La "promozione" di alcuni porti tra i primi 30 in classifica ed il fatto che Containerisation International sia stata in grado di comprendere nella lista il porto indonesiano di Tanjung Priok (che era stato omesso nella classifica del 2002 in quanto non aveva messo a disposizione i propri dati) ha comportato la conseguenza che due porti giapponesi - Kobe e Nagoya - non figurano più tra i primi 30. Peraltro, è interessante notare come i risultati in TEU di Tokyo siano cresciuti quasi del 21% nel 2003.

Alcuni dei tassi di crescita più alti si sono verificati presso i porti della regione del Medio Oriente e del sub-continente indiano, con Dubai a far registrare quasi il 23% e l'indiano Jawaharlal Nehru il 17,5%. Il porto di Salalah, nell'Oman - al numero 33 della classifica del 2002 di Containerisation International - ha sperimentato un massiccio aumento del 65,2% per poco più di 2.000.000 TEU.

Negli Stati Uniti, i volumi hanno avuto notevole impulso a Los Angeles, che è cresciuto del 17,6% nel 2003. Al contrario, il suo vicino Long Beach si è comportato meno bene. E questo sebbene esso, al pari di Los Angeles, abbia tratto vantaggio dalle forti esportazioni asiatiche, in special modo dalla Cina. Questa crescita dei traffici, nonché l'aumento del numero dei servizi tutto-mare da e per l'Asia, giustifica l'aumento del 10,6% del porto di New York/New Jersey.

In Europa, Rotterdam è stato ancora una volta il porto dalle maggiori dimensioni, sebbene i suoi rivali Amburgo ed Anversa siano tutti e due cresciuti a ritmo più elevato lo scorso anno. Essi, unitamente ad altri porti europei, hanno tratto vantaggio da un flusso di importazioni containerizzate dalla Cina.

Dal momento che l'effetto-Cina non mostra segni di rallentamento, sembra probabile che i maggiori porti mondiali continuino ad usufruire di una crescita rispettabile nel 2004. Tuttavia, come mostra la loro classifica, alcuni continueranno a beneficiarne più di altri.
