Vivace crescita dei porti del Medio Oriente grazie all'incremento delle attività con la Cina

In generale, i porti del Medio Oriente sono rimasti molto attivi nel corso del 2006, grazie per lo più all'incremento dei flussi di traffico dalla Cina.

Come mostra la tabella, i principali porti della regione hanno incrementato i propri traffici complessivi in media del 7,9%, sino a 18,8 milioni di TEU, compresi i carichi di trasbordo.

Lo scalo che ha conseguito i maggiori guadagni è stato Dubai, i cui risultati sono balzati verso l'alto del 17,1% sino a 8,92 milioni di TEU, a causa dell'intensificarsi dei volumi nazionali, delle riesportazioni fuori dalla proprie zone franche e dell'aumento delle attività regionali di trasbordo.

D'altro canto, i traffici del vicino Khor Fakkan, che comprendono per lo più carichi di trasbordo, sono diminuiti del 10,3%, a causa della perdita di traffici appartenenti alla UASC, alla Hanjin ed alla Norasia.

Anche il porto di trasbordo omanita di Salalah ha sperimentato un calo, dato che i suoi volumi sono diminuiti del 4,1% nel corso dell'anno. Principalmente, ciò è stato dovuto al riallineamento di alcuni servizi della Maersk Line.

Altrove, il porto di trasbordo yemenita di Aden ha conseguito una crescita del 24,8% ma partendo da una base molto bassa, che, si presume, poteva solo crescere. I carichi di trasbordo hanno rappresentato il 67% circa dei risultati del terminal di Aden (escluso il terminal Ma'alla).

In Arabia Saudita, i traffici di Jeddah sono aumentati di un modesto 4,5% sino a 2,9 milioni di TEU. Tuttavia, l'importanza di Jeddah è in aumento quale hub di trasbordo per la regione del Mar Rosso. La capacità complessiva dei terminal nord e sud di Jeddah è di 4,2 milioni di TEU, di modo che c'è abbondanza di capacità ancora disponibile.

Malgrado ciò, le autorità stanno programmando la costruzione di un terzo terminal. La Saudi Trade and Export Development Company si è associata alla STM (Seaport Terminal of Malaysia) per costruire la nuova infrastruttura ed effettuarvi operazioni; la STM ne detiene una quota del 20%.

Questo progetto da 1,662 miliardi di riyal (0,443 miliardi di dollari USA) dovrebbe avere inizio alla metà di quest'anno e ci si aspetta che venga completato in quattro anni. La nuova infrastruttura, lunga 860 metri e con pescaggio di 16 metri, aggiungerà 1,5 milioni di TEU/anno di capacità. Inoltre, il progetto ferroviario inerente al ponte terrestre est-ovest da Jeddah a Damman via Riyadh alla fine migliorerà le prospettive di questo terminal.
