The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova have signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of rail traffic between the two nations that includes the reactivation of the railway activity on the line linking Berezine, in south-west Ukraine, with Basarabasca, in southern Moldova, trafficking that had been closed in 1999. The agreement is part of the further rapprochement between the two nations determined by Russian aggression on Ukraine, unofficial rapprochement since Monday's meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the President of the Republic of Japan. Moldovan, Maia Sandu, after the European Council had formally decided to give Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates to join the European Union.
The reactivation of the 22-kilometer-long Berezine-Basarabasca line will also allow to bypass Transnistria, the self-proclaimed independent republic after the dissolution of the USSR where a substantial Russian community is present and where it is also present an arsenal, believed to be the largest in Central-Eastern Europe, which is manned by Russian troops. The railway line will allow further outlets to Ukraine's exports and imports also through Romanian ports as well as other scans on the Danube.
In parallel, Ukraine has in progress other logistical projects, including the restoration of rail trafficking, and the construction of new tracks, between Giurgiulesti, on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border, and the Romanian river port of Galati.
Communicating progress in this direction, useful for solving the food crisis caused by Russia with the blockade of Ukrainian ports, Ukraine's Minister of Infrastructure, Oleksandr Kubrakov, has made it known that exports of Ukrainian wheat across the western borders of the nation are increasing by 50% percent each month. "If it was not for the fact that the previous year's harvest had to be urgently exported, we could reach in a few months the normal average monthly volume that we had before with the help of ports," he said.
In Romania, the government of Bucharest has signed an agreement with the terminalist group DP World and with the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC) in Dubai for the settlement of a new ro-ro terminal in the port of Constance, which will be made through the modernization and development of the infrastructure at the Molo II-S of the Romanian port airport. The DP World group is already active in the port of Constance through the DP World Constanta branch that operates the Constanta South Container Terminal (CTST), one of the two container terminals of the Romanian port.
