Hyundai Merchant Marine: la sicurezza di Seoul

Il settore del trasporto marittimo di linea non ha reso profitti nel 2002 alla maggior parte degli operatori. Alcuni osservatori del settore potrebbero ritenere che un'affermazione di questo genere potrebbe essere persino troppo poco, e che per almeno uno dei due maggiori vettori marittimi sud-coreani, le cose si sono messe davvero male. La HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine) lo scorso anno si trovava nel bel mezzo di una crisi finanziaria, di modo che è stata avviata un'iniziativa di salvataggio al riguardo. Il nuovo presidente della società, Jeong Ik Noh, che è diventato il numero uno della società nel settembre 2002, ha parlato di un'era di stabilità, della possibilità di realizzare profitti e di ristrutturazione.

Una delle sue prime mosse è stata quella di annunciare la vendita della grossa divisione trasporto auto della HMM alla Wallenius Wilhelmsen nel novembre 2002, per la cifra di 1,5 miliardi di dollari USA. Ciò ha migliorato i risultati finanziari della società in un momento in cui si giudicava che le tariffe globali dei noli avessero toccato il fondo sui traffici di primaria importanza est/ovest.

L'amministratore delegato della HMM in Europa, C. K. Yoo, ha dichiarato: "Lo scorso anno eravamo in brutte acque e subivamo terribilmente la situazione relativa al mercato ed alle tariffe dei noli. Ma abbiamo ricavato un po' di sollievo finanziario dalla vendita della divisione trasporto auto, e ciò ha adesso accresciuto l'importanza della divisione di linea di tutto il gruppo Hyundai nel complesso". Tuttavia, le pressioni permangono.

A prima vista, le successive prestazioni della società nel primo trimestre del 2003 non sembrano grandiose se confrontate con il medesimo periodo del 2002, ma questo non corrisponde alla realtà. I profitti operativi del primo trimestre del 2003 sono stati pari a 8,5 milioni di dollari, con un calo del 70% nel 2002, ma le cifre dello scorso anno comprendevano un contributo di 40 milioni di dollari derivante dalla divisione trasporto auto. Non tenendo conto di esso, il profitto operativo sarebbe consistito in una perdita di 11 milioni di dollari, il che sta a significare che i profitti operativi del primo trimestre sono aumentati quest'anno di 19 milioni di dollari, ovvero del 55%. La vendita della divisione trasporto auto ha ridotto il debito complessivo della HMM del 32% e la proporzione tra debiti e capitale nel primo trimestre del 2003 è notevolmente migliorata sino al 442% rispetto all'1,363% del primo trimestre 2002. La rinnovata fiducia è bene illustrata dalla dichiarazione di una società di Seoul: "La HMM è tornata ad una stabile profittabilità e ad una solida struttura capitalistica attraverso un rigoroso processo di ristrutturazione societaria".

Le assai migliorate condizioni del mercato nelle direttrici di traffico di primaria importanza est/ovest hanno sollevato l'umore dei dirigenti della HMM. Rivela Yoo: "In questo momento, i nostri viaggi transpacifici in direzione est sono completi al 100% ed è cominciata la stagione di punta. Anche le navi Asia/Europa in direzione ovest sono complete ed abbiamo riscosso un successo su entrambe le direttrici di traffico. La crescita dei traffici transpacifici in direzione est viaggia sul 15%, mentre l'Asia/Europa è persino più fiorente, circa il 20%. La maggior parte della crescita deriva dalla Cina e da Hong Kong, in particolare dalla zona di Shanghai".

Continua Yoo: "Avevamo qualche soggetto con cui contendere nel transpacifico, ed è per questo che abbiamo deciso di incrementare la nostra capacità costituendo con altri il NYX (New York Express) alla volta della Costa Orientale degli Stati Uniti. Ciò equivale ad una crescita del 7% della nostra capacità transpacifica complessiva, sebbene la crescita complessiva dei traffici sia minore, dal momento che è scaduto l'accordo per gli spazi-containers con la Evergreen". Yoo ha spiegato che la nuova tratta è stata lanciata al fine di soddisfare le crescenti esigenze di alcuni grossi dettaglianti statunitensi che hanno allestito centri distributivi sulla Costa Orientale degli Stati Uniti.

Il considerevole ripristino delle tariffe di nolo dovrebbe contribuire alla capacità della HMM di realizzare profitti nel 2003. Yoo ritiene che la maggior parte dei caricatori abbia capito che le tariffe l'anno scorso erano troppo basse. Afferma infatti: "La capacità ne era stata turbata e ciò comportava un effetto negativo sulla catena logistica. Al fine di conservare la stabilità di mercato, i caricatori sapevano di dover pagare di più. Non è risaputo che un certo numero di caricatori transpacifici si servivano lo scorso anno del trasporto merci aereo quando non potevano assicurare gli spazi, ad un costo esorbitante, e non solo a causa dei problemi presso i porti della Costa Occidentale USA. La carenza di sufficiente capacità ha avuto molto a che fare con ciò".

Oltre agli ovvii vantaggi del riuscito ripristino delle tariffe, la HMM dispone di altri mezzi per puntellare la propria sicurezza finanziaria. Come avviene per la maggior parte dei suoi concorrenti, la HMM si trova nel mezzo di un progetto di taglio dei costi, che alla fine comporterà risparmi per 45 milioni di dollari entro la fine del 2003. L'enfasi maggiore viene posta sulla razionalizzazione dei servizi e sulla gestione dei suoi flussi di equipaggiamento vuoto.

Nell'ambito del settore marittimo di linea, la Hapag-Lloyd e la APL hanno in precedenza magnificato le virtù della gestione delle rendite, ma la HMM vi si dedica tranquillamente sin dalla metà del 2000. Yoo ha ammesso che, non molto tempo fa, tutti i vettori marittimi erano colpevoli di prenotazione dei carichi a livello di apporto minimo o addirittura negativo, giusto per riempirsi le navi. Tuttavia, le perdite impressionanti che i vettori marittimi possono realizzare in tale breve periodo di tempo, in particolare nel corso di un ciclo recessivo, sembrerebbero aver dato il via ad un significativo cambiamento di questa mentalità.

Precisa Yoo: "Siamo stati bravi ad assicurare la visibilità dei profitti per tutte le nostre transazioni mediante la riorganizzazione dei nostri sistemi informatici interni. A tutti i livelli, dall'alta dirigenza ai responsabili di vendita, vi è visibilità e vengono valutati tutti gli apporti rispetto ai propri bilanci di profitto. I dirigenti regionali dispongono di una autonoma facoltà di assegnazione degli spazi per ciascuna nave, conoscono le tariffe e hanno l'autorità di realizzare un proprio modello di attività su piccola scala al fine di conseguire il massimo profitto per il gruppo. La decisione se impegnarsi o meno in una certa attività è difficile, a causa del numero delle coppie di porti coinvolti. Oggi, se l'apporto netto è negativo, dobbiamo andarcene. Inoltre, il valore dell'attività differisce da vettore a vettore, dato che ciascuno di loro dispone di scenari di equipaggiamento diversi".

La partecipazione alla NWA (New World Alliance) ha apportato vantaggi alla HMM. La razionalizzazione dei servizi e la cancellazione dei servizi doppi ne costituiscono probabilmente i migliori esempi, secondo Yoo. Per un vettore, coprire un servizio di per se stesso è sia difficile che costoso. I singoli allacciamenti possono concentrarsi su aree specifiche, quali la Cina e la Corea del Sud, piuttosto che su tutti i principali porti. Ad esempio, l'allacciamento PSV della NWA è adibito al servizio del mercato cinese meridionale, consentendo tempi di viaggio molto rapidi alla volta di Los Angeles. Yoo non vede lati negativi in ordine a tale alleanza, fatta eccezione per le ovvie discordanze minori concernenti l'impiego di navi che vengono trasferite dai traffici primari a quelli di nicchia. A suo giudizio, peraltro, ciò è stato "inevitabile, ma necessario ai fini di costruttivi accordi futuri".

Per quanto attiene all'espansione delle attività, la HMM certamente ha aspirazioni in questo senso, ma, a differenza di alcuni dei suoi concorrenti più aggressivi, ci potrebbe volere un po' di tempo per conseguire questi obiettivi. Tutti i progetti vengono presi in considerazione in maniera misurata e prudente. Yoo si serve dell'arena europea, di cui è il responsabile, per illustrare tale approccio. Afferma infatti: "Alcuni vettori marittimi sono approdati nel Baltico e nelle regioni dell'Europa Orientale, ed anche noi miriamo ad esse. Non abbiamo fatto programmi per l'immediato futuro, ma li faremo probabilmente entro i prossimi due anni". Al momento, la HMM dispone di agenti terzi che si occupano dei suoi interessi a Praga, Gdynia e San Pietroburgo. Secondo Yoo, la crescita dei carichi è lenta, ma un certo numero di produttori asiatici si è localizzato nell'Europa Orientale, di modo che vi è l'esigenza di pronte forniture di parti e componenti.

Un'occhiata alla tabella dei servizi della HMM mostra come essa sia un'importante vettore est/ovest ed attualmente disponga del 5,8% circa del mercato transpacifico in direzione est. La sua quota del 15% del mercato complessivo sud-coreano di esportazione rappresenta senza dubbio un grosso contributo al totale ed il nuovo servizio congiunto NYX andrà ad incrementare la penetrazione nel mercato Asia/Costa Orientale USA. La HMM ha altresì rilevato 150 TEU/settimana dalla Yang Ming sul suo servizio AMS dall'Asia al Mediterraneo. Ciononostante, vi sono delle lacune nel profilo in questione, sebbene la HMM non si faccia tentare ad offrire nuovi servizi in mercati non collaudati. Spiega Yoo: "Noi abbiamo intenzione di crescere, ma lo faremo con prudenza. Per il momento, non abbiamo alcun desiderio di entrare nei traffici né africani né sudamericani. Raramente prendiamo in considerazione le pressioni provenienti dai nostri clienti e finalizzate all'offerta di altre direttrici di traffico: loro conoscono le nostre capacità, e, se non possiamo aiutarli, vanno a cercarsi altri vettori marittimi. Noi certamente non perdiamo il lavoro a causa del nostro attuale portafoglio-servizi".

Ciononostante, Yoo ha ammesso un futuro servizio aggiuntivo: "Stiamo per fare ingresso nella direttrice di traffico India/Europa perché alla fin fine si tratta di un mercato in crescita". Il socio della HMM nella NWA, la MOL, ha recentemente lanciato il proprio servizio congiunto Euro-Galex con la Norasia, dove impiega una nave. La HMM rileverà 150 TEU in spazi-containers settimanali. La società potrebbe entrare in altri traffici, ma solo in risposta alla domanda dei clienti.

Mentre alcuni dei suoi concorrenti, quali la MSC, la K Line e la CMA CGM, hanno tutti quanti ordinato un certo numero di navi post-panamax in consegna dal 2004 in poi, la HMM ed i suoi compartecipanti alla NWA stanno adottando un approccio del tipo "stare a vedere". Inoltre, Yoo ha ammesso che i principali cantieri sud-coreani e cinesi in ogni caso sono al completo quanto ad ordinazioni. Data la fluidità di cassa in seguito alla vendita della divisione trasporto auto, la HMM dovrebbe essere in una posizione migliore per investire in nuovo tonnellaggio, ma le future decisioni devono ancora essere valutate. Ci si aspetta che la decisione definitiva possa essere presa entro la fine del terzo trimestre di quest'anno. Quale che sia l'esito, la consegna di nuove navi non avverrà sino al 2006.

La logistica è un settore di attività in cui la HMM non è stata presente sul mercato in modo evidente sinora, a differenza di un certo numero di suoi concorrenti. Ma questo l'ha messa in posizione di svantaggio? No, è stata la netta risposta di Yoo: "Abbiamo la ferma intenzione di far crescere questo tipo di attività, ma essa sarà in linea con le esigenze di mercato. Al momento siamo impegnati nella logistica, ma la affidiamo ad agenti terzi che effettuano per conto nostro varie funzioni di autotrasporto e magazzinaggio. Non è certo nostra intenzione quella di creare una distinta divisione logistica e tutto dipende dal fatto che i volumi di attività raggiungano una sufficiente massa critica. La nostra base clientelare si suddivide equamente tra spedizionieri e proprietari del carico e, per quanto non riceviamo attività logistiche dai primi, vi è un sacco di spazio per i secondi".

A livello personale, Yoo non riesce a scorgere i benefici condivisi dalle compagnie di navigazione di linea che acquisiscono aggressivamente altri 3PLs oppure costituiscono una distinta divisione logistica. Perciò, sembra improbabile che la HMM possa avventurarsi in breve sul sentiero della gestione della catena della logistica e delle forniture, lasciandola così libera di continuare a concentrarsi sulla propria specialità di compagnia di navigazione di linea da banchina a banchina.

Né la HMM si affretta ad investire nei terminals. "Lo scopo principale, nell'assicurarsi un terminal, è quello di far sì che si possa offrire un servizio senza soluzione di continuità ai nostri clienti, ma se noi potremo conseguire questo obiettivo con altri mezzi, lo faremo" dichiara Yoo.

Tuttavia, la possibilità ' ad esempio ' di un coinvolgimento nel progetto dell'isola al largo di Yanshan a Shanghai non è fuori questione.

Il risultato netto di questo misurato ma attento approccio della HMM dovrebbe essere la sicurezza. La società sta ricostruendo il proprio modello di attività, concentrandosi sulle proprie virtù primarie delle risorse umane, dei prodotti informatici e della fedele base clientelare allo scopo di massimizzare i profitti della divisione di linea.

Conclude Yoo: "Ci aspettiamo notevoli profitti per il 2003". Yoo non ha voluto fornire cifre precise, ma la strategia commerciale della compagnia di navigazione sembra essere abbastanza solida da spingerla lungo il sentiero verso una persistente buona salute finanziaria. Il tempo dirà se la HMM riuscirà a non andare in rosso quando il livello delle tariffe di nolo inevitabilmente calerà in qualche modo in futuro.
