Today in its Genoa shipyard, Fincantieri has
delivered the new
cruise ship Explora III to the
Explora Journeys, the luxury ocean travel brand of the
MSC group. With the entry into service of
Explora III, three
units out of six commissioned by the company are already
operational, while the remaining three ordered are all under construction
and will take to the sea in just two years -
Explora IV
and
Explora V in 2027,
Explora VI in 2028 -
thus completing the fleet construction program that
involves a total investment by MSC of over 3.5
billion euros and was entirely entrusted to Fincantieri
(
of
18
October 2018,
14
March 2019,
6
July 2022 and
21
September 2023).
Explora III is the first unit in the series
powered by liquefied natural gas and will be able to use
renewable fuels such as bio-LNG, synthetic LNG and biofuels.
In addition, as with the others in the series, the connection system
to the quayside electricity grid with which the ship is equipped
allows you to reduce emissions while parked in the
ports. The subsequent Explora V and Explora VI will be
additionally equipped with fuel cells, a technology that
allows you to produce energy even more efficiently and
to reach the goal of net zero emissions well before
of the 2050 deadline set for the entire cruise sector.
