Assogasliquidi-Federchimica, the Italian association of gas companies
liquefied substances, calls for policy measures that allow the possible
doubling of national consumption of liquefied natural gas by 2027.
Presenting a study by Bip Consulting on the LNG and bioLNG market in
Italy, the association has proposed and a plan to relaunch the
ten-point supply chain to accelerate the decarbonisation of the
road and maritime transport, industries and localities
off-grid.
"LNG/bioLNG - underlined the president of
Assogalisquidi-Federchimica, Matteo Cimenti, on the occasion of the
Today's presentation of the study - is an energy product
essential for the energy policy of our country and the
broader decarbonisation strategy, and not only for
its uses in heavy road transport where it is already
widespread and in the maritime sector destined in a short time to
growth thanks to the infrastructures in progress and the
regulatory interventions in shipping. Even in its use
in industry and local off-grid users, in fact, there are
wide potential for development".
"LNG and bioLNG - added Costantino Amadei,
president of the LNG group of Assogasliquidi-Federchimica - I am
concrete, ready-made, decarbonizing solutions. In particular, the
bioLNG is a technology that is already available, safe from
easily integrated with existing infrastructures and
with one of the lowest costs per ton of CO2 avoided.
It can decarbonise heavy road and road transport now
ship, where electrification is still far from a flood
scalability. Both LNG and bioLNG are already in use today
in heavy transport in many realities. And the case proves it
most sensational: China. This country, world leader in the
electric mobility, has chosen natural gas
liquefied for heavy transport, with consumption that in 2024
reached 22 million tons, against 170 thousand
Italian tons. Ratio of approximately 130:1 demonstrating the
urgent need for more efficient industrial policies
ambitious even in Europe".
With regard to the proposed strategy for the relaunch of the
liquefied natural gas supply chain, Amadei explained that the ten
proposed points include 'urgent measures such as a
tax credit for the purchase of LNG and bioLNG powered vehicles
and the implementation of the National Fund for the renewal of the Park
vehicles with strong rewards for those who buy heavy vehicles
the use of ETS2 revenues to incentivise the use of gas-fired
of renewable fuels in hard-to-abate sectors such as
road transport, maritime transport and off-site industrial uses.
grid».
"Our sector - assured Amadei - is
Ready and the time has come for industrial choices
Brave. Using LNG/bioLNG means reducing emissions from
immediately, without waiting for future technologies still in the
experimental. We can no longer speak of transition
leaving out solutions that are already operational and economical. We
Certain that the government and parliament will be side by side on these measures
of companies".
The study by Bip Consulting observes that the Italian market for the
LNG shows signs of recovery with demand that in 2024
reached 208 thousand tons, mainly driven by the
of motor vehicles (about 80% of the total). The outlook points to
further growth until consumption doubles in the next three years,
years, exceeding 400 thousand tons/year, a volume that - has
specified Assogasliquidi-Federchimica - may be
reached "if the measures are fully implemented
proposed in the plan to relaunch the sector, thanks to a further
consolidation of road transport and market development
maritime".
The association's plan for the relaunch of the LNG sector and
bioLNG calls for an urgent revision of the European Regulation on
CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles, the introduction of CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles for at least one
three-year period of a structural tax credit for the expenses of the
road haulage companies related to the purchase of these fuels,
the considerable increase in the so-called
investments for the purchase of heavy vehicles by setting high
rewards for LNG and bioLNG powered vehicles and the
structural reduction of the motorway toll for vehicles
fuels as well as port fees
for ships, also in dual fuel version, powered by LNG.
In addition, the plan calls for the rapid definition of the
strategic frameworks provided for by the new European AFIR Regulation for
promoting the development of fuel infrastructure
the introduction of certain mechanisms that allow
allocate revenues from ETS auctions to decarbonisation measures
that generate them and invites us to continue to develop the availability
and bioLNG production.
Finally, it calls for the recognition of guarantees
ETS and to ensure the homogeneous adoption of the
LNG bunkering guidelines recently adopted by the
Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
