La classifica mondiale dei porti containerizzati: cinesi ancora da record

La scorsa annata è stata nuovamente densa di attività per la maggior parte dei porti containerizzati del mondo; in tale contesto, gli scali cinesi hanno fatto registrare tassi di crescita particolarmente sostenuti.

Complessivamente, i porti containerizzati del paese hanno finito per movimentare un traffico stimato superiore del 21% rispetto a quanto fatto nel 2006.

Al contrario, i porti specializzati nella movimentazione di box negli Stati Uniti ed in Giappone hanno faticato ed in genere hanno assistito ad uno slittamento delle proprie posizioni nella classifica dei primi porti containerizzati.

Tutti assieme, i primi 30 porti containerizzati rappresentano un risultato di 274 milioni di TEU, equivalenti al 56% del risultato di 484 milioni di TEU stimato da Containerisation International a livello mondiale (v. Tabella 1).

Il primo porto cinese in classifica, Shanghai, ha migliorato la propria posizione di un posto, superando Hong Kong sulla scorta di una crescita di oltre il 20% dei traffici containerizzati sino a 26,15 milioni di TEU.

Pur avendo conseguito un altro anno di impressionante crescita, Shanghai non è riuscito ad ottenere la prima posizione come molti esperti si aspettavano dopo la sua prestazione dei primi sei mesi del 2007.

L'esito, tuttavia, non è andato lontano da quella meta, e poiché le attività di trasbordo locali presso il porto sono previste in crescita dall'attuale livello del 10% al 30%, sembrano assai realistiche le previsioni secondo cui la porta d'accesso del fiume Yangtze movimenterà 34 milioni di TEU nel 2010.

I giorni di Singapore allo zenit della classifica, perciò, sono contati.

Ciononostante, l'hub guida del sud-est asiatico sta cercando di difendersi.

Nel 2007, i risultati relativi ai box di Singapore sono aumentati del 12,5% sino a 27,9 milioni di TEU; il principale fattore del suo continuo successo è costituito dal suo record di movimentazione efficiente di grandi volumi di carichi di trasbordo.

Al contrario della fiorente crescita fatta registrare dai due principali porti containerizzati mondiali, le pressioni economico-finanziarie esercitate in paesi quali il Giappone e gli Stati Uniti hanno comportato un'annata generalmente deludente per i loro porti.

Tale realtà si è manifestata in special modo nei porti della costa occidentale statunitense.

I risultati complessivi in termini di TEU di Los Angeles e Long Beach, ad esempio, sono effettivamente calati rispetto ai livelli del 2006, dato che i 15,67 milioni di TEU movimentati sono stati inferiori dello 0,6% rispetto ai 15,76 milioni di TEU lavorati l'anno precedente.

La scarsa prestazione ha fatto sì che entrambi i porti scivolassero di tre posizioni in classifica, rispettivamente al 13° e 15° posto (v. Tabella 1).

Al contrario, il principale complesso portuale statunitense della costa orientale, New York/New Jersey, ha fatto registrare un ulteriore progresso della propria attività di movimentazione di container, con un risultato stimato in 5,4 milioni di TEU (+6,1%).

Tuttavia, esso ha perso ancora un posto in classifica, sino alla 19a posizione.

In Giappone, mentre i risultati containerizzati di Tokyo sono diminuiti del 3,8% (sino a 3,82 milioni di TEU) e la sua posizione in classifica è scesa di due posti (sino al 25°), Yokohama è addirittura scivolato del tutto fuori dalla classifica dei primi 30 porti.

Esso, infatti, è crollato dal 27° posto ottenuto nel 2006 al 31° posto dello scorso anno.

In generale, i porti giapponesi hanno sofferto le carenze di produttività ed i costi elevati.

Nel contempo, le spese correlate alla movimentazione dei carichi sul territorio in Giappone hanno comportato uno sviamento di traffici da porti hub, quali Busan e Kaohsiung, a porti regionali minori, quali Hiroshima, Tomakomai, Sendai e Chiba.

Il gran parlare che si fa dell'India come un altro gigante produttivo e come una superpotenza economica asiatica è testimoniato altresì dal suo ruolo commerciale internazionale.

Il porto principale del paese, il JNP (Jawaharlal Nehru Port), ha fatto registrare una prestazione molto buona nel 2007, dato che i suoi risultati in termini di box sono aumentati del 26,3% sino a 3,9 milioni di TEU.

Il JNP l'anno scorso è risultato uno dei porti dalla crescita più rapida al di fuori della Cina e ha migliorato la propria posizione di quattro posti nella classifica dei principali scali, andando ad occupare la 24a piazza.

L'annata lo ha visto attirare più scali diretti da parte delle principali compagnie di navigazione di linea, mentre l'impegno della APM Terminals e della DP World nella gestione delle sue infrastrutture ha comportato ulteriori miglioramenti del livello di produttività e dell'efficienza del servizio.

Tuttavia, le caratteristiche fisiche del JNP limiteranno la sua espansione.

Colombo, che rappresenta il principale hub di trasbordo nell'Asia meridionale, ha registrato una crescita del 10% dei traffici sino a 3,38 milioni di TEU, quel che basta per conservare la 29a posizione.

Al contrario, il 2007 ha visto Dubai avvicinarsi ulteriormente ai primi cinque posti della classifica, poiché si è attestata al 7° posto, in salita dall'ottava posizione dello scorso anno.

Il porto ha fatto registrare un tasso di crescita del 20% e ha visto i propri risultati salire sino a 10,7 milioni di TEU lo scorso anno.

Le eccellenti infrastrutture di Dubai e la sua localizzazione in prossimità della zona franca di Jebel Ali sono stati i principali fattori nel contesto di una spirale di crescita più che ventennale del porto degli Emirati Arabi Uniti.

E' altresì significativo il fatto che la percentuale dei traffici di trasbordo sia in calo e che attualmente la proporzione rispetto agli altri tipi di traffico sia attestata a 50:50.

Quanto al resto, lo scorso anno si è dimostrato relativamente stabile in ordine alla classifica dei porti containerizzati; i piazzamenti dei porti hanno subito solo alcuni spostamenti minori.

Inoltre, c'è stato solamente un solo nuovo ingresso, vale a dire il ritorno di Gioia Tauro dopo un anno di assenza.

Il porto dell'Italia meridionale, che è controllato dal gruppo Contship Italia, è salito dal 32° posto del 2006 alla 27a posizione lo scorso anno.

Ciò è avvenuto sulla scorta di un impressionante balzo del 17% dei volumi sino a 3,45 milioni di TEU.

Nel 2007, Gioia Tauro ha assistito ad una ripresa di propri traffici di trasbordo, avendo tale infrastruttura tratto enormi vantaggi dalla decisione della MSC di utilizzare lo scalo calabrese come porta d'accesso a causa dei problemi nel Pireo.

Altrove, Amburgo, il maggior porto della Germania, ha fatto registrare una crescita prossima al 12% dei propri traffici containerizzati, che è stata sufficiente a fargli conservare la sua 9a posizione in classifica.

Jurgen Sorgenfrei, membro del consiglio di amministrazione del Porto di Amburgo, ha dichiarato: "Dopo l'ultimo dragaggio del fiume Elba, la quota di mercato di Amburgo nella fascia dei porti containerizzati del nord è aumentata dal 22 al 26%.

Il porto di Amburgo è assai efficiente ed è ben localizzato".

Dei 9,9 milioni di TEU movimentati, i volumi di trasbordo da Amburgo ai porti attorno al Mar Baltico hanno rappresentato 2,7 milioni di TEU.

Il 50% circa dei traffici con l'estero di Amburgo sono costituiti da movimentazioni con la Cina, l'India ed altri paesi asiatici.

Malgrado le proprie difficoltà, Rotterdam - il maggior porto containerizzato europeo - ha raggiunto una pietra miliare nel 2007, quando ha oltrepassato il limite dei 10 milioni di TEU.

I suoi traffici complessivi, pari a 10, 79 milioni di TEU, rappresentano un aumento del 12% rispetto all'anno precedente; esso gli consente, perciò, di superare Kaohsiung attestandosi al 6° posto in classifica (v. Tabella 1).

Inoltre, l'autorità portuale ha in atto un intraprendente piano di espansione, avendo in programma di spendere più di 12 miliardi di euro per i progetti inerenti ai terminal Maasvlakte 2 ed Euromax.

Altrove in Nord Europa, né Anversa né Bremerhaven hanno modificato le proprie posizioni in classifica, sebbene i porti abbiano fatta registrare elevati tassi di crescita, rispettivamente del 16% e 10%.

I maggiori partner commerciali di Anversa sono stati il Brasile, la Malaysia e gli Stati Uniti, ma il porto adesso ha nel mirino per lo più la Cina ai fini di una futura crescita e spera di attirare altri vettori marittimi a scalare Anversa quale primo scalo in ingresso per l'Europa dall'Asia.

Il solo rappresentante del Regno Unito nella classifica dei primi trenta porti, Felixtowe, ha avuto un 2007 molto migliore ed il suo incremento del 10% dei volumi di traffico è stato sufficiente a fargli conservare il 30° posto.

Quest'anno, tuttavia, è probabile che lo si veda scivolare oltre il 30° posto in classifica.

Tornando all'Estremo Oriente, Busan, principale porto della Corea del Sud, si è dato da fare per conservare il 5° posto, con i suoi volumi di box in aumento di poco più del 10% nel 2007 fino a 13,27 milioni di TEU.

Tuttavia, esso resta ben lungi dal complesso portuale di Shenzhen (Yantian, Shekou e Chiwan) nella Cina meridionale, che negli ultimi anni si è catapultata in cima alla classifica.

Con un risultato di 21,1 milioni di TEU, che costituisce un aumento di oltre il 14% rispetto al 2006, il suddetto agglomerato di infrastrutture per la movimentazione di contenitori quest'anno sfiderà Hong Kong per la terza posizione in classifica.

Infatti, l'anno scorso Hong Kong ha fatto registrare solo un modesto incremento dell'1,4% dei propri traffici containerizzati, con 23,88 milioni di TEU movimentati rispetto ai 23,54 milioni di TEU del 2006.

Di conseguenza, il porto è scivolato di un posto attestandosi al quarto.

Anche Kaohsiung è scesa in classifica, data la sua attuale ottava posizione rispetto al 6° posto del 2006.

Il maggior porto di Taiwan ha sperimentato solo fiacche prestazioni negli ultimi anni; ciò è stato in gran parte dovuto alle pressioni sui costi nell'economia nazionale ed alla sua perdita di competitività nei confronti della Cina.

Altrove, Port Tanjung Pelapas, nella Malaysia meridionale, ha visto i propri volumi containerizzati salire del 15% lo scorso anno.

Tale crescita è stata alimentata dalla sostenuta crescita della domanda nei traffici Asia/Europa e dal suo ruolo quale hub di trasbordo per il sud-est asiatico.

Sia la Maersk che la Evergreen hanno movimentato volumi di raccordo molto più elevati attraverso il porto lo scorso anno e hanno contribuito notevolmente al suo risultato di 5,5 milioni di TEU.

La Tabella 2 fornisce qualche indicazione sulla concorrenza che gli attuali primi 30 porti del mondo potrebbero dover affrontare nel 2008 ed oltre.

Al momento, i porti situati nel primo scaglione di questa classifica sembrerebbero in grado soltanto di mettere sotto pressione le ultime cinque posizioni della classifica principale.

Tuttavia, porti come Valencia e Le Havre stanno facendo registrare tassi di crescita impressionanti, principalmente sulla scorta dell'entrata in funzione dei nuovi terminal e dei futuri piani di sviluppo.

Nel 2007, i traffici di Le Havre sono aumentati del 22,1% sino a 2,6 milioni di TEU, mentre i risultati di Valencia sono aumentati del 15,7% sino a poco più di 3 milioni di TEU (v. Tabella 2).

Anche se i traffici containerizzati globali dovrebbero rallentare quest'anno, date le attuali preoccupazioni sull'economia mondiale in fase di rallentamento e sullo scricchiolio del credito finanziario, gli esperti ancora prevedono una crescita dell'attività di movimentazione di contenitori nella fascia dall'8,5 al 10%.

Ancora una volta, ci si aspetta che la Cina realizzi un'ottima prestazione, prendendo d'assalto la classifica mondiale dei porti.
